Matching System: Tier 3 runes matched with no runes players.

As a new player who has only been playing for a little while, I have noticed that many times I get matched with upper level players that have Tier 3 runes and all their masteries in place. I am level 13 now and have been matched up with Level 30 ranked players. After playing a game I get the summoner names of everybody that was on my team and those on the enemy team in order to review their profiles. As happens many times, last night I was matched up with an enemy team with 3 players that were ranked players with tier 3 runes in place. Most of my team members had either no runes or just a few lower level runes in place. We did not have any level 30 players on our team with Tier 3 runes. There was no contest. This is very painful for a new player and I have chosen to play robots and learn about the champions and roles using custom games since playing people is so difficult at my level being matched with such experienced and well built players.

These players are worse to play against than smurfs. At least (as I understand it) the smurf is using a beginner account without the runes and masteries in place. He is using his skill and advanced knowledge of the game to outplay beginners which I am sure is considerable but the runes and masteries are being rebuilt as he rises.

That being said, I compliment the developers on their creativity and brilliant art work and skill to build this game which I can still enjoy in custom games playing robots.

I just wonder: How is it that the matching system is so unjust on the fields of justice?

Players lvl1 to 29 are not supposed to play against or with players lv30! The matchmaking system is broken

You'll learn from the experience and should be excited to play against better opponents. If you lose enough games, your matchmaking rating will drop and you'll get easier games anyway.

It all balances out. Also, over the hundreds of games it takes to grind an account to 30, or the eventual thousands of games you'll play in League, I don't think playing a certain percentage of poorly matchmade games really matters.

Finally- A higher level player (account level) isn't necessarily a better player than a new player. It all depends on their overall experience with mobas or games in general. A fresh 30 isn't any different from a level 5 in my eyes in terms of overall skill in this game. Some players coming from other games can jump right into Gold right after 30 after a few dozen games, while others can be in Bronze for literal thousands of games. Just play it out. If the game is hard, shouldn't that be a learning experience, rather than an opportunity to complain that your games aren't as easy as bots? If you get smashed, then it'll be a short game. If it's a long decent game of 40+ minutes, then why complain? It was a good game.

  1. Team Builder doesn't have the population to support it at low levels.
  2. Level 30s have the ability to queue with low level friends.
  3. The low level experience was designed with equal level players in mind.

Team Builder at low levels is understandable. The alternative to level 30s queuing with low levels is smurf accounts, which may end up "ruining" more games. The low level experience needs to be reworked from the ground up.

Since it would probably be a long time to have the beginner world change I have to live with what exists right now(an unfair playing field). Therefore I just have to level up and buy Tier 3 runes to improve my chances. In the mean time I take my beating and/or hide or level up with coop vs AI until level 20 and buy the runes. See the following link for the discussion on Tier 3 runes vs no runes: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/tips-tricks/KPlLe7Yv-tier-3-runes-vs-0-runes-1v1-contest

I'll break down real simply why it sucks that this happens (also why it sucks when you first hit level 30, and this begins happening CONSTANTLY while you are developing your own rune pages)

A complete rune page will give anywhere between 500-1300 or so worth of stats (typical starting rune page for adc/jungle for ex)

  • 9.6 AD : equivalent to a longsword @ 360G
  • 12.5 AS : going by dagger pricing 375G
  • 12.5 MR : going by NMM 250G or CDR @ 395G worth of stats
  • 10 Armor: going by Cloth Armor 200G

= 1185 Gold worth of stats at start of game NOT taking masteries into account

This means that without even choosing the most efficient runes gold/stat wise the Summoner with the MOST experience is given the equivalent of an early game triple kill, including first blood If the player is even remotely competent that advantage will dominate his opponent so completely the only options will be to cower (and get raged at by team mates) or to get killed (and get raged at by team mates)

Clearly this is not ideal.

Runes need to be removed altogether. They are nothing more than an IP sink to force players to spend money on RP.

I hear you BlazingSalvo and I reviewed your very impressive stats on your profile page. I would not bet against you in a matchup of your 1000+ wins to my 18 wins. I would not want to play against you with 4 other people under level 30 or ever for that matter. You are just too good at the game. That would not be constructive to improving any persons game play. We would be demoralized and should it happen often enough there would be no point in continuing. There is no contest in playing those matches and there is no opportunity for a beginner player to express their own skills or learn anything from the experience except to stop playing.

When beginner players enter a game, we are trusting a system of fairness to be in place not something ridiculous that sets us up for failure over and over again. See the following post:

http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/GE4QTjhE-possible-teambuilder-matchmaking-balance-issues

In that post it appears that some level 30 players are noticing also and they don't feel they should be matched up with beginners either. It is not just about me "complaining". It is just plain not constructive.

We are trying to learn the game and test our skills against similar level players. We trust that we are not being matched up to ranked players fully built with multiple runes pages and masteries. That matchup would be just silly and pointless. If I ever did need to learn from higher level players I can watch their videos (tons of them on youtube) or they can do custom games with a beginner. There should be no place for abusing the beginners for fun in a quality game like this.
