Fire Ghostcrawler

The game is arguably in its worst state ever balance-wise.

The truth is, GC liked buffing frost mages in WoW because he played one (they've been OP for years and years upon end). My guess is that now he's playing LeeSin and decided to give himself a new skin.

Can Riot do us all a favor and fire this guy? He obviously doesn't know what he's doing.

Btw GC - nice mage & assassin update, very successful. I especially enjoy the AP build variation, oh wait... Okay, wait..

Still thinking.

Oh yeah, nice reworks Leblanc Rengar Khazix Katarina Shaco

Didn't that guy majorly fuck up WoW before Riot hired him? What is the story there? It is hard to find info. I would love it if someone who knows could chime in on this guy's previous work.

The guy's educational background is a PhD in marine science. Anyone who knows how the PhD mind works can tell you that they are big dreamers/thinkers but not the best problem solvers. You want problems solved and efficiency addressed, you hire an engineer. That is how those people are trained to think. (Ghostcrawler, if you are reading this, you literally know exactly what I'm talking about and can't deny the generalization lol.)

Disclaimer: No I am not an engineer.

Well basically he was hired by Blizzard when WoW was at its best (on the way to 12 mill subs). It only took him a short amount of time to make the game go down a spiral. He joined some months before the launch off Wrath of the Lich King (arguably the most epic expansion ever made for the game) and thankfully didn't have much to do with that expansion, but you could already see at the very last patch before the new expansion launch (Cataclysm) that he had plans to casualize and simplify the game (he merged stats because they were "too complicated" and introduced raid finder which basically dumbs down every single raid into kindergarden-level difficulty).

The expansion came and the sub numbers instantly tanked by several million and it remained that way until the next expansion (Mist of Pandaria) of which he was also responsable. Here the sub numbers kept tanking even harder and at the end of the expansion numbers were at below 6 million. He quit /got fired (idk) mid-expansion because he saw where it was going. Another expansion launched and it was PURE garbage, then a new one launched last year which was a hugeee improvement over any of Ghostcrawler's works.

Basically what he did was casualize the game through simplification, destroyed PvP balance as a result (WoW was actually getting quite popular in the PvP scene, he made it unplayable and non-competitive), he made several unpopular decicisions without listening to the community and so on.

Basically he failed at his job and Riot decided that must mean that he's qualified to develop League. The current state of the game can't exactly be thought of as great tbh, and I believe GC is largely to blame. The guy has no sense of what balance actually means.

Hmm interesting and generally not good for league.

I get the sense that his changes have been largely to sculpt league into a theoretical ideal he has in his mind without any clear rhyme or reason for how the changes he's pushing are going to get there or even if they will move things in the right direction.

The longer I play this game, the more it feels like game development revolves around throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks. It blows my mind how long glaring issues remain unaddressed. Then when they are addressed, the root cause of the problem is often completely ignored, and I often find myself wondering if the people who are in charge of developing the game even play the game at all.

Indeed. He is without a doubt an idealist who does not weigh the concequences of the actual outcome of his actions. He bases everything on theoretical grounds and not what may actually happen.

He is definitely disconnected from the game (who knows if he even plays) and is imo unfit to be a lead designer. I'm sure he'll be gone in due time though.

Ghostcrawler became the public face of WoW. This means that every balance decision he got credited for and as you can imagine with a game that is not going well, that means he got a lot of flag. It is also during that time that people accused him of buffing frost mages despite not playing frost mages. In league he he does not play meta champions at all (at least not the ones that are meta now) although I cant remember exactly which champions he does play.

Regarding balancing league he hardly has any influence on live balance (aka. patch to patch balance) and mainly focuses on overarching goals (such as: which class update next? Should there be less pen? Is there too much damage? etc.).

Yeah, and we see how that went. None of the recent class updates have been successful. The mage one wasn't even needed, and actually made build variation even worse. Most of the reworks were trash as well. He's the one making these calls and then the devs have to come up with something. That's why we have blast cones and all the new garbage in the new jungle. Instead of reverting these forced changes, they stick with them. Do I really need to mention the recent assassin update + lethality? GC wanted to give assassins more counterplay, yet achived the direct opposite failing to realize that assassins by nature have very little counterplay - you can't change that. Either you get oneshotted or you live. That's how they work.

You sure bet I'm going to blame GC. When you're a lead designer it's your responsibility to analyze and see where the game is headed. GC knew WoW was going down the drain and needed to go back to the old design philosophy, yet he didn't. He refuses to undo any changes for which he's responsible.

GC is hardly responsible for how WoW went. He just ended up being the public face while not being the one having the final say. Regarding the updates a lot of people does not think that it has all been a failure. Remember that it was live balance that changed lethality so GC had no say in that.

To begin with the class updates are not meant to bring immediate balance but to create opportunities for future balance. Rengar as he currently is, is a good example of this: he no longer one shots you without chance to react yet he is a much more popular jungler and is arguable stronger than before even though there now is some counterplay to him.

If you wanna hold someone responsible for something go ahead. Personally I hold Obama responsible for the fact that I don't earn a billion dollors a week.

GC is hardly responsible for how WoW went.

Lmao, as a lead designer of course he's responsible, if only partly so.

Fun fact: Ghostcrawler isn't part of the Personalization team, so "he gave himself a new skin" is basically you saying you don't know enough about Riot to talk about them.

Fun fact: GC is the lead game designer i.e he can pull whatever plugs he wants even in other departments.
