Implement a "Mute Self" button already!

Illabethe··10 votes·4,583 views

K smurf just got a 2 week, because I have a tendency to complain when people literally afk their lanes, don't cooperate as a team, and generally wander around an unwarded map with a Mordekaiser and a Shaco on it, but none of them want to have a conversation about what they are doing wrong.

I KNOW I can get toxic.

However, I'm also aware who I am as a person, and what I'm capable of changing. I know white knights will always say, "Hey! Reform "blank blank" (toxic much?), but I know science, behavior studies suggest evidence contrary to reforming being something that actual exists in the form of actual behavior changes, especially when the person you're asking to reform is generally a caring, respected, person who generally has positive interactions with real people, but has a hard time turning that into a 30-50 minute personality in a video game.

**Why hasn't Riot implemented a SELF MUTE? **

  1. Anyone who would self mute is showing they are trying. Unlike the players who refuse to mute others and try to bait out MORE toxicity, they actually want to fix the problem, rather than punish it.
  2. It'd create a much friendlier game overall, because quite frankly, Toxicity = EVERY GAME, and the majority of players know whether they are ban prone or not, and by muting yourself, you can often create more positive games just by enforcing restrictions on yourself.

I would do it all the time. Wouldn't you?

(P.S. Disabling the enter key isn't handy enough to substitute for such a function. There ARE times you need to communicate with your teams, and going into Options 3-4 times a game just isn't feasible)

P.P.S. Riot was talking about implementing scorecard requests to check the status of your account as well. What ever happened to that initiative? I tried requesting once, and all I got was a bot answer and the ticket "closed." It'd be nice to know how in the hole your account is to some extent. Seeing those messages that say, "400+ people have reported you" might actually instill a stronger message than what Riot does.

P.P.P.S I'm not asking for Sympathy. Please don't reply along those lines. I know I needed a break. I just want to prevent the problem escalating to the next step. Which.... isn't going to happen with this community and your average team.

Yes because it would tottally be so hard for me to realize that my self mute is on and just turn it off when i get angry enough.

Seriously though if you dont have enough self control to not type in chat flamming your teamates. What makes you think you are gonna have the self control to not turn off the self mute button.

And you talk about how there are times where disabling the enter key wouldnt work bc you still need to communicate with your teamates. Well how the fuck would a self mute be any different both prevent you from communicating with teamates.

Your asking riot to waste time on something that would be completly useless because you think it would help your lack of self control. Essentially you are trying to shift the blame twoards riot for shitty in game behaviour rather than looking for a solution for yourself.

Seriously there other ways of expressing your tilt without taking it out my teamates. My personal favourite tbh is calling champions broken or badly desighned or saying fuck riot. Realistically i know its not the best solution but i find its better than flaming other players because im not hating on the players Im hating on the game which i think most people would agree is a more acceptable thing to do

It is not you who dispenses discipline..... If you turn chat back on and get toxic, such a feature would not save you from Riot bans.

But for someone like me.... who vents in chat rather than vocally, because you know..... I have a family.... or because I don't beat up my computer..... I wouldn't switch chat back on, and wouldn't get bans.

Demented Lemur2 votes

Yeah but there is nothing stopping you from turning the chat back on and deciding to be toxic the only people this feature would actually be useful to is the people that do not need it in the first place and ultimately be useless.

If you have the self control to not turn chat back on to flame you should have the self control to simply not need feature. If you dont have the self control not to flame in chat this will not fix things for you

Illabethe1 votes

I feel like I'm talking to a wall; If someone turns chat back on, guess what? THEY GET PUNISHED. If they don't turn it back on, they SAVE THEMSELVES.

Demented Lemur1 votes

So you mean they get punished like they do now or they just dont type which is something you can already do. Seriously your underestimating how aware people are that their flame is not being heard and overestimating the so called psychoogical effect this would have.

These people can save themselves by not typing its that bloody simple

Illabethe1 votes

MOST people CAN'T. Compelling human nature is FAR stronger than 'willpower.' The people who don't type...... generally break things, scream, etc. Or they never cared about winning in the first place.

Demented Lemur1 votes

So if they dont have the will power not to type what makes you think someone will have the willpower not to unmute themselves and flame just as they do now.

Yeah compelling human nature is stronger than willpower thats why chat bans exist your solution is a test of willpower and is not compelling

Illabethe1 votes

There is a vast difference between a decision that is pre-meditated and one that is spontaneous.

Unmuting takes pre-meditated thought. Typing takes no such premeditated action, because it is first hand accessible.

The difference is the layers and complexity of the decisions, and the proximity in time of the action to the initial catalyst.

The difference in time between Unmuting and typing after being stimulated is far longer than the time between just typing and pressing enter. The lack of focus and multitasking power also drastically dis-incentives doing multistep tasks.

Demented Lemur1 votes

I know the difference between a spontaneous decision and a premeditated one.

But you dismissed the premeditated decision when you disagreed with the idea that you should not able to unmute during the game. Because you stated you still need to be able to communicate with teamates at times.

You state that typing is a spontaneous decision while unmuting is a pre meditated decision.which is simply not true both are spontaneous decsions as you can do either at anytime just because there is more actions doesnt make it a non spontaneous decision..

Having so i can decide if I dont want to type for the whole game and having no way to unmute is. Me making a pre meditated decision not to type the whole game because im making a decision before there is even an issue.

Me deciding to unmute during a game and type is a spontaneous decision as i have decided to do it once the issue has appeared

Illabethe1 votes

I didn't dismiss pre-meditation, and don't understand how you're interpreting the ability to unmute yourself mid game as premeditation.

If I were to compare chat privileges to carrying a gun:

Arriving at the scene = circumstantial, and analogous to "enabling chat" Arriving with a gun with the intent to use= premeditated, analogous to "enabling chat with the intent to misuse it."

If your intent in unmuting is to help your team, but happen to go off the rail briefly, that is circumstantial, spontaneous reaction, not premeditated action.

Intent derives spontaneity and premeditation.

Demented Lemur1 votes

If you go to mute yourself pregame because you dont want to talk. That is the eqivalent of not taking a gun somewere because you have no intent to use it and do not care for the option to use it. Which we established would be fine. That is a premeditated decision.

However what your suggesting is that the gun is on the table in front of you . And through a spontaneous decision can decide to pick it up ( unmute) and then shoot it at someone( flame teamates) .

A premeditated decision is something you plan out well in advanced ( before game starts) before you are faced with the situation (teamates angering you).

A spontaneous decision is made in the moment the situation ( teamates angering you) arises with no real previous plan to deal with it. Ie unmuting yourself and flaming.

Yes it can be premeditated that you went into that game with the intention of not talking. But if the option ( gun) is on the table you can still make the spontaneous decision to pick it up and shoot

Overall this would be a rather pointless feature that wouldnt fix any problems for people who would actually need the feature

I get mad at this game and teamates too; however, I just yell my frustrations out loud and do not type. The only time i will flame in chat is when i find certain aspects of the game frustrating so ill say champions are broken or riots a bunch of idiots balance wise which i do not think is a bannable offence as im not flaming other people in the game. The other times are usually when i get flamed first so naturally ill flame back or resort to using the mute button. Either all my solutions do not require riot to implement anything other than better balancing and faster repsponse time to toxicity both of which i aknowledge riot does try to do their best.

Illabethe1 votes

You do realize that 37 states have a right to carry, and a majority of the population carries? In those states, carrying a gun does NOT equal pre-meditation. A gun being present does not prove INTENT.

The backstory. The struggle. The actions you take around a suspected weapon are what proves intent. NOT the existence of a weapon.

You never planned to blow up on your team. You didn't walk into the game, and say, "This team is worth yelling at." You don't know how they are going to perform. You might end up surprised and get carried. You just went into the game thinking, "I might need to relay how I play, objectives I'm looking to capture, or give tips on what to buy."

Demented Lemur1 votes

Well I live in canada so my laws are different from yours so im not gonna bother even adressing that as I dont agree with the US laws at all nor are they relevant to this argument.

The point is if you have a gun at your disposal you are potentially willing use it making it a pre meditated preparation for potentially a worst case scenario

Yes correct you dont go into a game planning to blow up on your team making any action you make during the game in terms of chat a spontaneous action including unmuting yourself and then flaming

Beerstein2 votes

Yes, but the option should only be available on the external client so you can't turn it on once the game loads.

Illabethe2 votes

Why?

Beerstein1 votes

{quoted}

Why?

Because the second you wanna flip out you'll turn it back on in game, what good reason would you NEED it for once it starts? xD should only be able to disable and enable it in the external client. If they do this they need to do it, not half do it.

Illabethe1 votes

that's kind of the point. If someone really does want to not destroy the game experience, they WON'T turn it back on..... The people who WANT to be toxic would still get punished for turning it back on.....

Meteora7071 votes

I mean you just flame the shit out of your team without probably actually realizing you're muted which is great

Reaper Soraka1 votes

I think they had something about this years ago.

The problem was toxic people used other means to take it out on their team for whatever their failing performance was in the toxic persons eyes. Whether it was feeding the players lane, stealing their camps etc. It didn't actually work because the toxic person wanted his opinions/feelings heard.

Illabethe1 votes

They have never had a self mute.

They apparently for the first 1-3 years of the game had infinite chat bans rather than enforcing game bans. But that was implemented on THEIR end, not on the player's end. Same as the up to 5 stored chats with 1 extra chat per 5 min thing they have now. Except after a 20 game chat, you got another 20 game chat.

However, their studies on that is flawed, because it was still under the Tribunal system, rather than an automated system.

They claimed they stopped the perpetual chat bans due to "people also consorting to other forms of griefing, but from my experience, that's not my case. I usually am 100% in it to win it. But when your team says, "We need infernal drake, and then as soon as you clear bot champs, ward toward mid..... the very people claiming we need drake.... recall and say "I was on my way." and proceed to do that three times in a single game, I'm going to get VOCAL, especially if they are feeding that to hyper carries. Team imo is obviously griefing at that point.

In 5+ years, I have never even voted "Yes" to a surrender. I have never left a game. I have never inted down a lane. About the "worst" thing I MIGHT do: Base inhibs are already down, team is losing stalemate team vs team push and passively giving ground without even trying to kill the minions accompanying the champs..... I might go split push a turret or two, because me being in that mid fight is going to prolong the game about 1 minute at most. Team dies in .5 seconds and somehow thinks me being there would have changed that. They don't even kill 1 of the people pushing. Yup. I'm totally going to turn the scales on that (not). Especially when I'm someone like Evelynn.

you deserve the ban :)

They know they wouldn't be able to actually ban people if there wasn't chat offenses that they could copy and paste. Having to investigate things like inting, trolling, is way more work than lazy Riot is willing to do.

Honestly I think this would be more psycological rather than effective. You don't NEED a self mute. You don't need a button that FORCES you not to type. You want a self mute? You have one right now! It's called self control. You don't have to be nice, you don't have to be friendly, hell you don't even have to type. Not being toxic is a restraint you can show and you don't need Riot to do it for you, because when they do it for you it's a 2 week vacation. I get wanting to unload into people sometimes, but you have to realize it doesn't work like that. If you just can't help it, either say it out loud or type it then cancel it.

Have you ever told someone with Autism, "Practice some self control?" Have you ever told someone with OCD, "Practice some self control?"

Yeah. Reality and idealistic fiction are two different things. You're giving up valuable time in your lifespan to play this game. You always want a chance to win. And down to a person, when teams do bad things, I'm sorry.... but people flip out. There's not a single person in this game with "self control" on that level.

High elo accounts get away with it, because in general, they have less to complain about, less people they do not know, and even when a serious issue comes up, it's usually only one person being a poor player. They also care about not getting demoted, so they surrender less, and troll less.

  1. What would stop toxic player from subconciously turning chat on to flame?
  2. You could simply put /note and type whatever toxic shit you want without needing any1 else to see it.
Illabethe1 votes

I dont get this spam about basically "not using the feature" that I'm suggesting?

If they don't turn it on, they get banned eventually. That simple.

Because your suggestion is just an inconvenient feature. The only way it would work is if you couldnt turn it off. But since you dont agree to it, again, just an inconvenient feature. Simply use /note in the chat and flame as much as you fucking want xd you get to vent out while your teammates cant see that, and it wont interfere with further communication.

Illabethe1 votes

How is a self mute an inconvenient feature in any way?

-It prevents your team from being derailed by YOU. -It prevents you from saying reportable things.

How are EITHER of those "Inconvenient?"

That's assuming you actually use it, but we all know vast majority wont. If they want to flame they will flame, and those who wont flame doesnt need such feature. And if youre not able to control yourself, welp, get banned. Natural selection.

Like I said, it would be okay-ish if you werent able to turn it on/off to your liking at any point of the game. But thats not what you want, and that why it's bad. It will only lead to these cases:

  • you will turn it off to talk normally and lightly flame some1, then turn it on to hardcore flame
  • you wont even use it
  • you will use it and you will keep it active (prolly the only case that makes sense)
  • you will forget to turn it off, leading to wierd situations where youre shotcalling like a madman only to find out no1 can read what you typed xd

Not to mention it would be pain in the ass to fuck around with that in options in the middle of a game. You srsly thing players would have nerves to go in options and turn that shit on/off several times? Hell na.

Illabethe1 votes

If the vast majority don't they get punished. That's FAIR. If they can't be mature enough to use a feature, then they deserve punishment, since such a feature would be Riot at least going halfway to help those who really DO understand they (themselves) are a problem, but really don't have a way to prevent their impact.

It would need to be able to be turned off so that you can communicate (legitimately) with your team. If someone decides to take it off, and misuse chat privileges, that's on THEM.

You're literally saying: I want to force a perma chat ban on bad actors, but call it voluntary, and instead encourage them to grief in other ways. I just want the right to be able to take away my right to talk VOLUNTARILY.

P.S. /Mute all is not an "Options" Menu item. You literally type it in chat.

/Mute self could also be a chatted prompt... Or in the O window..... next to your icon...... a button like how you manually block people now.

Takes a LOT less time to do that, than to get called toxic for telling your team what they are doing wrong, what to buy, etc, and trying to keep it cordial.... (It's hard as hell to keep your cool when someone is int feeding a hard carry; Ever seen pro play? They don't keep their cool...... several actually have perma bans....)

Once again, if they need to use a fucking self mute because they're not able to have some self control, they're not mature, they're kids, or a manchild.

It would need to be able to be turned off so that you can communicate (legitimately) with your team. If someone decides to take it off, and misuse chat privileges, that's on THEM.

Then it's pointless lmao. Just as you cant turn off CR you shouldnt be able to turn your thing off during the game. Besides, pings exist you know?

You're literally saying: I want to force a perma chat ban on bad actors, but call it voluntary, and instead encourage them to grief in other ways. I just want the right to be able to take away my right to talk VOLUNTARILY.

Perma chat ban? No lmao. Learn to read young one. I said that you sgouldnt be able to turn off self-mute DURING THE GAME, but after the game (before you start a new one) youre free to decide if you want to mute yourself or no.

P.S. /Mute all is not an "Options" Menu item. You literally type it in chat.

/Mute self could also be a chatted prompt... Or in the O window..... next to your icon...... a button like how you manually block people now.

/note exist aswell, and it's not as complicated as your thing.

I can already imagine how it would look like:

wants to flame /self mute

30 secs later decides to tell his team to do drake /self unmute Team do drake

team doesnt listen and wants to flame them you FUCKING PIECES OF... oh shoot better mute myself again /self mute

*10 secs later? /self unmute Pls team to drake =)

But if you use /note it would look like this

Pls team to the drake

team doesnt listen and wants to flame /note are you fucking r%%%%%ed do drake you blind fucks their jg is dead for another 20 secs

Pls team do the drake enemy jg dead for 20 secs

See the difference? Your idea is simply too inconvenient because you constantly need to juggle between mute/unmute whenever you want to flame...instead of having some self-control.

Or, again, use /note.

Y'all can stop arguing. Riot is adding it. 10 years late and probably half the population lost that it woulda held, but it's finally coming.

That is NOT what they are implementing. They are making "/Mute All" a checkbox option in settings that is permanent per game if you check it....

It is not MUTE SELF.

Edit: Aparrently disabling ally chat DOES mute self. The option is extremely blunt, but if it works as intended it's better than nothing.
