What mentality is more important/healthier for league?

Like the title says, which mentality do you guys think league should be designed around?

Now, obviously both have very similar end results, one wins, the other loses. But it's the subtleties that matter. So please vote and share your thoughts and opinions on the matter.

EDIT: I'm talking about design principles (like champ balance, kit, etc), not your in-game mentality when interacting with others. Sorry for possible confusion.

I should not be rewarded for following the standard, only rewarded if I'm doing exceptionally well (like having really good sportsmanship for example).

I should be punished if you fall below the standard.

That's my 2 cents.

I don't think in game performance should be a factor on your league mentality. You should be a positive and helpful force for your team even if they aren't.

Well, people respond better to positive reinforcement than negative in certain situations, so believe rewarded should be the way to go.

It seems like Riot has done a good job at doing this. If you win, you get more IP than if you lose. If you consistently preform above average, then you will rise in Rank.

A punish system almost never works (see rage games and such) but a rewarding system is much better, could be more diverse, and of course it is more enjoyable for the player who performs well and less painful for the one who does not.
