ya its fun for bot lane to be 2 vs 2 for 30 mins. and not 2 vs 5 by 5 mins.

BlâckLotus10 votes

to be honest i do agree that leaving the lanephase before like 7-8 minutes should be more punishable, maybe if riot brought back homeguard things would be better since even if you roam and kill an enemy he will be able to come back in lane fast enough to not lose a ton of exp and gold.

TheSingularity2 votes

I miss purchasable homeguard so much. They destroyed tp jungle hec/rammus with the change.

Wouldn't hurt to keep hg as is, but have the option to buy it early for 450Gold. But this gold won't be refunded at 20min just cos everyone else got it free (that's the cost for early advantage)

nice table2 votes

it was fun when adcs weren't broken enough to be the only lane that matters.

TBH they were more important in the S5 tank meta. They were the only real ones that could reliably kill tanks so games were often decided by who had the stronger late-game/tank-killing marksman. Combine that with objective control being huge in S5, especially at the end, the meta was pretty much just Trist and Jinx running around getting Pentas and maybe Kalista because she was still busted.

TheSingularity2 votes

Brand, velkoz and other dps/burn mages like cass/ryze did fairly well against tanks.

TequilaZombie38 votes

Ohhh, the good old days in which top lane was actually decided in a 1v1 battle rather than the only way to win it being having a jungler cheese ganking.

Spaceman5pff14 votes

Renekton or you could turn that cheese gank into a double kill

since when are ganks cheese ganks? ganks are ganks, if you dont like ganks, you should learn to play safer, as is the process of getting better at games and activities. warding takes a few seconds and the frequency of you checking your minimap is what makes all the difference in the world

EinarUlfar25 votes

Game was MUCH better back then. Turrets were made out of more than just glass and paper, and so there were no major concerns for the infamous "everybody bot for ez early cheese lead + win!" ganks in SoloQ.

Ahristocats22 votes

escuse me sir, but i'm sure this was in season 4 and not season 5

but yeah it was fucking great i loved it, then again it was because soloQ, pure skill 1v1

MunchCrunchLunch4 votes

Season 5 had much longer games. games averaged 35-40 minutes. games right now end at 20-25 on average

blueberrypancake4 votes

First starting in season 4 I have to disagree

Remember the Ziggs meta?

Ahristocats3 votes

dude, that was in the end of season 4 season 4 started with shyvana/mundo/nasus/full tank rengar going top for 36 min sustaining farming and doing years of duelling

I don't understand why people don't like tank metas. They're way more fun in my opinion than having people constantly getting one-shot. The only real way to burst people was to focus them down, and they had to be caught out of position for that rather than just getting bursted down by one carry.

Tormentula8 votes

They were fun in the old days, but nowadays every tank feels like they do way too much damage. Tanks are meant to soak a ton of damage, not literally 1v5 entire teams and have a better KDA than your assassins have the time (cough poppy). Been feeling like this since the juggernaut update, just right now ADCs and mages deal way too much damage. I remember the juggernaut update had people questioning if they should just run full tank comps cause they live and deal damage making every other role kinda meaningless.

The more I think about this the more I see how much power creep there has been over the years...

Actually I don't think I've ever witnessed somebody successfully beating a late game even KDA poppy in a 1v1, I've even seen vaynes lose to her time to time.

The juggernaut update was a sad time to be alive. It made the already evident power creep even moreso, and would often have me asking aloud, "Why is everyone blowing everyone up instantly? wtf is going on?" - prior to my understanding of power creep.

GBay99 made a video recently on why he thought Camille wasn't OP, and it was basically that she's one of the only top laners that's good in early lane phase. Most early game top laners are only good relative to the tanks that they lane against, not actually that dominant early. Tanks are meant to be strong late game. Certain champs also scale better into late game than others, and Poppy would be one of those.

Tanks need to do some damage, otherwise they are essentially useless. They do significantly less damage than other roles, but they "outdamage" them in 1v1 fights because they don't take much damage in return. Tanks are also usually good at picking other people out, and so when people are caught out of position it feels more unfair.

Many tanks are legitimately overpowered right now, but it's not a fundamental problem, it's one of numbers. If the numbers of the meta tanks were toned down, then they would be a lot weaker. This might be the first place to start looking at changes.

To my understanding, many other MOBA games do not balance ADCs around being glass cannons, but rather having a little bit of defenses. League ADCs do more damage but are also much squishier as a result. This is probably the most fundamental problem, not that tanks do too much damage. If you nerf tank damage, we just go back to wet noodle fights, and that's no fun for anybody (and those saying they enjoy those fights, remember how many times other people intervene simply because the fight takes so damn long).

Tanks can't 1v5 unless massively ahead, since even they die to focus and can't minimize the enemy damage such that they take less than they deal. And the juggernaut update was a terrible state of balance.

Genuine question: why did Riot decide to shorten the game length?

Genuine question: why did Riot decide to shorten the game length?

Likely to increase player base as a lot of people would rather play 2-3 20-30 minute games than 1 hour long game.

Swarovsko2 votes

They should focus on something else if they want new players tbh. Also, wasn't league of legends already one of the most played games?

Even if it is the MOST played game you will have players drop off and new players come in. They want to keep increasing player base and game length has something to do with that.

Personally, I disliked when every game was 45 mins. Took way too long and didn't feel that rewarding to win, felt horrible to lose.

Beh, everyone hated the lasers/shields. Also, they only got introduced in S4 afaik.

MonkeyMadness5 votes

I agree, longer game times allowed for much more strategy. IMO, League's gameplay peaked in season 5. The combination of the VASTLY diverse jungle options that came about with this season along with the rift art update just made the game feel almost new again. Of course, Riot has undone most of these changes for 0 reason at this point and made the jungle a strategy-less mosh pit occupied by only a few incredibly OP/meta champs, but you know "iterative improvements" 'n' shit...

Gregor Gysi1 votes

Cinderhulk (+ Nidalee?) isn't what I would call particularly diverse. Also, long games are an indicator of players not being able to take advantage off a lead - that's why low elo games are much longer than high elo games.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

The problem with nidalee is that she was balanced for a playstyle centered around laning, not jungling. This kind of thing happens whenever a champ is pulled out of their intended role. Remember hecarim top with challenging smite? Also, having been sitting around the high gold/low plat level consistently for the past few seasons, I can tell you that game length is shorter even at the same level of play. First tower bonus is absolutely raping the ability to make a comeback, as are other snowball-enforcing mechanics. There is no reason for this shit, and the fact of the matter is this: League is dying. Badly. Overwatch is crushing it, and this is in part because Riot absolutely gives 0 shits about us while Blizzard is clearly trying to please fans. The game hasn't even been out for a year yet and they've already completely reworked a shitty hero at the request of fans that hated her. Riot won't even nerf problem champs like yasuo.

Uh? That only proves how S5 wasn't diverse in terms of jungle picks..

Shorter when compared to S5, yes.

Citation? Afaik many Overwatch players have returned to League (me included) and Overwatch has a severe problem when it comes to competetive - it's just not enjoyable to watch.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

Uh, except that it categorically was THE most diverse season for jungle picks sooo...

Overwatch has a severe problem when it comes to competetive - it's just not enjoyable to watch.

??? That is entirely your opinion and thus has 0 place in a discussion of facts. Personally, I find Overwatch much more enjoyable to watch. However, that is not what we are discussing here. Overwatch competitive mode is already better than League and it hasn't even been out for a year yet.

Gregor Gysi1 votes

You made the claim that League is dying and that Overwatch is the reason for it. And you provided NOTHING to prove that. The burden of proof is on YOU and I don't need to provide anything to this "discussion of facts" (read your own post before you get all on the high "facts" horse).

Wrong. And seeing how you are just making claims I don't even need to say more.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

It is common knowledge that LoL absolutely hemorrhaged players to Overwatch last season. If you need proof then there is no help for you. Also, given that YOU are refuting MY statement, the burden of proof is entirely on you, not me. Learn how to debate kid.

I am honestly sick of botlane being a 2v5, especially if your own team doesn't pay attention and you repeatedly get tower dived. Then your team complains about botlane losing. So irritating. Leaving your lane constantly should be way more punishable than pinging tower after being killed in a 2v5.

Leetri2 votes

If it's a 2v5 constantly and towers supposedly die if you recall even once, shouldn't your team have taken both mid and top tower already? Sounds like the main problem is incompetent players.

yeah the game being decided by 1 6 items teamfight, nullifying any tactical early game play sure was fun....

also, laning times are related to ELO, the higher elo the shorter the laning phase

Actually, towers were a lot stronger so you needed multiple late game teamfights won. I liked the way the game was back then.

Snowplosion4 votes

Okay, towers weren't strong. The difference is the amount of damage that could be outputted onto them was way less.
