crit or on hit yi
in high elo games, they go for a tanky on hit build i.e http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-legends/build/wuju-like-a-guide-season-7-patch-7-9-411808 in low elo, they go crit. which is better overall

tanky on-hit builds like:
+ situational boots (or some adaption of this build) are almost always better than crit Yi I've found. Only times I go crit Yi are when I want to fck around more than usual
Tanking up has the following assumption:
If you engage, your team will follow you.
In low elo, if you engage, your team will wonder why you were not helping them ward baron. So tanking isn't always a good idea, until you notice your tank isn't tanking.
Crit is very risky, as its very expensive and takes multiple items to get rolling, it scales a lot harder into the late game however.
On hit still does pretty high damage though, you also access said damage earlier in the game and it also enables tankier builds.

It honestly doesn't.
Crit has incredibly high burst damage and makes Yi's pentakill potential higher, but the on-hit build has higher DPS, better survivability, better team fighting (due to said survivability), and overall better dueling since he can't be easily burst like crit Yi.
Crit build is a very greedy cheese build that is super team reliant.
Yes and no, I would argue against an enemy who cant lock you down or burst you in the blink of an eye crit Yi will pack a lot more dps, it's just harder to get the dps off due to how squishy you are..
But like you said, it's more of a cheese build these days, quite fun to play in the random game modes and pub stomp from time to time, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone though.
Crit Yi is fun, I ran 25% crit dmg runes and built IE, Reaver, BT, PD, Shiv, and boots. Lets just say 1 Alpha Strike late game 1 shot their adc. Lul.
When I go crit. My items are shivv, gp, ie, boots with attackspeed mallet and blood thirster. When I don’t need boots anymore I usually get Bork. This crit build is tanky and makes you survive longer in 1v5

I only play Master Yi on hit. For me it's better because you can't be OS and you can do the same damage to the backlane and the frontlane. Indeed you can focus tanks to let your team do the damage to the squishy if you are behind but you can also 1vs2 the ennemy carries easily. The build I do is :

You have a good sustain with the botrk ally to the monstrous dps you have. Guinsoo allow you to do hybrid damage and the frozen mallet have an interesting passive with a lot of health. The black cleaver is a good choice if there are a lot of tanks in the enemy team, the passive will break their armor faster than the light. But if there are a lot of Magic Damage, Wit's End is for sure better, it allow you to have better attack speed and more sustain with a good magic resistance. With this, I play with the lethal tempo rune because a lot of the dps isn't workable if the Attack Speed is blocked at 2.5 you lose a lot of damage. But if you don't need this attack speed you can also change the Attack Speed Jungler Item to do the Warrior enchantment and therefore, you can use the Conqueror rune who gets you better sustain and True Damage who is really useful to down Tanks. Hope this post helped you :) [slayer-jinx-catface]
