How can you be bad at a video game?

Covert Ops Gnar··2 votes·793 views

title.

How is it mentally, physically, or cognitively possible to bad at video games? The simplicity of pressing a button when a pattern appears is uncanny. It's like the flashing-light game of Simon Says; push button corresponding to pattern shown. In other words: X happened, that means I have to do Y. Z Just happened, now I have to do Q. I do not understand the difficulty in that unless somebody has the mental capacity of an infant or is physically impaired.

Could somebody explain?

It just is. Just like to some reading or writing is bad for them. Some people learn at a different pace, like some people are just having a bad day.

Video games are pattern recognition, not creativity.

It's like performing logical operation is the easiest damn thing to some people, while it's not to many others.

Over time people have been constantly making a "thing" that "math is hard", while I hardly ever struggle with it. It has appeared all over in cartoons, the media, people surrounding me, and of course the internet. It's "pattern recognition".

See a correlation here?

I dont understand _how _ they are not easy. 1+1 always = 2, there are no exceptions. Games are the same exact thing in a more abstract way, but after practice it becomes less abstract and more apprehensible.

Lane opponent not in lane

  1. call missing
  2. ward if not already warded
  3. push to turret if have enough time, if not freeze lane
  4. teleport/roam if no tower can be taken/significantly damaged (later in game than #3_

It's the same EVERY time.

Unfortunately, the speed and velocity of how people perform certain actions vary very greatly, whether if it's something "easy" or not. Sometimes it doesn't matter. Sometimes it does. The varying speeds of performing a single task can change the outcome of such task.

Drinking too fast could cause someone to choke, while drinking too slowly could cause overflowing of liquid in a person's mouth. Throwing a ball with a higher velocity yields a much farther distance, while throwing a ball with a lower velocity yields a shorter distance. Throwing the same thing with the same speed, but opposite velocity yields the same distance, but opposite directions. Things like that; doing a simple task at varying speeds matter.

So, if doing "simple tasks" at different speeds matter... then that means, mashing buttons at different speeds also matter. You mash it too slowly, you lose. You mash it too quickly, you could also lose. Which is why some people can be bad at video games; because not everyone are quick button-mashers.

That had to have been the shittiest analogy I've ever read.

game sense has nothing to do with reaction timing or how hard you press the buttons. making stupid decisions it just the player being incompetent. not warding with free wards, not taking free objectives, not recalling, not focusing right person in teamfight, using abilities on wrong person, waste long CD abilities before a major fight/objective, etc. That is all stupidity.

DrCyanide1 votes

Those are a lot of variables that could contribute, and you're assuming the person is even looking at those aspects of the game. The idea of studying a game is very foreign to a lot of people.

Athenes Lulu1 votes

Poor OP has never seen someone with terrible reaction times playing any given video game.

Poor, poor little OP, taking the quick reaction time skill for granted.

Covert Ops Gnar1 votes

My question is: how can you have a shitty reaction time?

I set myself as a minimum standard; I want to be the worst person at everything, but I never am. I am always the best at everything. Wouldn't it be just great if a really good player was the weakest link on the team? That's my dream.

I refuse to communicate with anybody in person that does not meet my standard, which nobody has ever even come close to meeting. It is very disappointing to see. I don't see myself as having "skills", but just as everybody else being stupid, naive, ignorant, arrogant, prideful, stubborn, and egotistical.

How can people be bad at playing video gamges music? How is it mentally, physically, or cognitively possible to be bad at video games playing music? I play 4 different instruments. Violin Guitar Drum Bass

I don't know how you can be bad at playing music. Creating music is different because it's abstract.

BloodyTompon2 votes

So you could instantly pick up a violin and play Bach? Didn't have to learn a thing?

Covert Ops Gnar1 votes

I could play anything that was written down after I learned to read notes. It's "press this key when this symbol appears". It's not that difficult.

BloodyTompon1 votes

So you can play all of Bach well I assume

ModWulf Helhammer3 votes

I mean, all flying is is pressing some buttons and moving a stick. How come people struggle at that?

Covert Ops Gnar1 votes

I have no idea, I've gone to flight school for helicopters.

SithesisLord3 votes

Because learning patterns are different.

You can learn some things quickly and other things slowly, with more effort. People can be unskilled at something simply because they are still learning. It´s a core part of life, y'know? Learning and all.

We weren´t born knowing everything there was to know in the universe. That´s why we study, we search, we improve. League is no different.

No one can pick an Azir for the first time and do pro level Azirsecs. No one can pick a jungler champion and know right off the bat how to deal with every single matchup.

People learn how to get better. It may take their whole lifetime playing, or just a few hours. But it is how it is.

Also, 5/7, nice troll post.

Think of how many people and the extent to which those people are bad at driving. At the absolute maximum, driving requires the use of just four keys. League has a minimum of six, and use of the mouse.

Covert Ops Gnar2 votes

I don't know how you can be bad at driving either.

I'm good at everything so I don't see how anybody can be bad at anything, Everything is so easy in my perspective and I'm clinically psychopathic so I have no idea how to sympathize or "be in their shoes".

Reaction time is trained as well as innate. And some people just don't have it. there is a cap however.

Covert Ops Gnar1 votes

Does that make me just naturally better than everybody, or was I 'taught' to be better than everybody else?

I believe a very contradictory set of morals and politics:

I believe everybody should be treated equal, but not everybody is equal and that needs to be recognized by those who are either above or beneath person in question.

This belief isn't held by many, if not anybody else, because it is so hard to understand to a point where you have to naturally know how to believe this, otherwise it will not seem coherent.

There's a difference between games like LoL and, say Resident Evil 4.

Covert Ops Gnar1 votes

They both apply the same fundamentals.

FPS Games: Recognize "that's an enemy" (I strategize whether it is best to shoot now or wait, where to aim, most efficient, etc etc) Put in steps of shooting target Shoot Target Dead/Alive If alive, get to cover If dead, dead

League applies the same fundamentals of pattern recognition.

Enemy full health with x stats can I kill how many people on both teams travel time etc e etc etc etc

Same thing

Void Nargacuga1 votes

With any online game, be it CoD or LoL, you also have to take into account that the opponent is doing the exact same things as well. And they may even be thinking 3 steps ahead and/or thinking of other possibilities that may occur based on the information they have as well.

Covert Ops Gnar1 votes

it appears to me that people actually have difficulties playing the game, not the people

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a troll. You guys keep rolling with his argument, despite the fact that it's getting progressively more absurd as he keeps revealing irrelevant things about himself.
