Why Ekko will Always build tank, Only solution:

Ekko Builds tank because his kit is designed that way, independently of his scaling. He is not an assassin because he lacks the burst and hard-to-dodge/point-and-click spells main sources of damage that actual assassins have (his Q-W-R are probably the easiest to dodge spells in the game) Counterbalancing that, his passive and W passive are his reliable sources of damage, which require extended battles at melee range. So ye, it's not a matter of stats, it's a matter of his kit, which will make him always worse as pure damage.

Only Solution: The only way i see him actually becoming an assassin, is if they increase by a whole bunch his Q speed, decreased W delay and make R targettable. With him having reliable sources of damage, they could tweak his scaling and balancing him as an assassin if thats what they want.

Making R Targettable = Throwing out thematic of ability. Would prefer not thank you.

Riot just fucked up with understanding Ecko. They thought he was a mage, but the guy is clearly a tank. I think Riot is doing the right thing by making him stay a tank. I wouldn't be surprised if they come out later and change him to an actual tank in description and stat wise, and then alter his kit slightly to make it geared towards top lane sustain. Remove the slow/MS from his passive and put in a heal instead.

Play to his strengths, rather than buffing his weaknesses. Riot just didn't know this champion well enough before release.

I agree with this, everything in his design just screams "tank"

Also, his Q is only easily hittable at point blank range, and you have to dive into the enemy team to use W effectively. If you aren't tank you get blown up in both of these situations.

Exactly, only while in melee range which reinforced his need of building tank as his burst won't deal much.

It isn't really that they are "hard to land" the real issue is they are extremely easy to dodge.

The way I see it. His Q should be way more reliant on AP for damage. So That Ekko would have to focus AP to simply Wave clear. Many AP Assassins like Ahri or Le'blanc need that wave clear. You would think that Ekko could fit into a similar mold.

The only potential problem would be Completely ignoring the need for his spells to actually get that wave clear. And that would suggest that Tank Ekko is broke, because his items are broke. (Sunfire, ICB)

If the nerfs to his base damages haven't cut it at this point, then it would suggest that damage isn't the problem. (At least coming from his kit.)

as i said, its not a problem of numbers, its about how reliable his sources of damage are, Q is unreliable as a source of damage, passive and W passive are reliable, so thats it.

you are not considering both Ahri and Leblanc are both ranged, while Ekko is melee, which is already a huge advantage when farming. also, calling Ekko an assassin is a mistake, as said, he lacks the kit and the burst to be one.

Sunfire is a waveclear item, is he already has good waveclear then it does little for him.

I agree, his stats and scaling are not even a factor here, the issue is he is designed (willingly or not) to be a tank as his skills are unreliable, while actual assassins have mostly easy to land spells or even point and click.

that's the whole point. You can make his Q scale with 200% AP or something, and I'd bet that a tank or off-tank with 1-2 AP items build will still be better than full AP, just due to how risky being glass with Ekko is.
