I find this information very useful and want to spread it around.** Of course, this doesn't solve the issue that most mages and marskmen can't actually deal with him**. However knowing these hard counters is sure to be helpful when going against him. He is officially the most hated champion for the LAN region according to Riot's post XD

**TL;DR for non Spanish Speakers: **

  • Use exhaust as Yasuo is about to End Ult to mitigate Ult damage and amplified damage after it
  • QSS knock Up and peel
  • Malzahar, Annie, Kayle and Swain dumpster Yasuo because their abilities can cross his wind wall

Or you can ban him.

yasuo -win lane against him- -he comes to lane and runs it down to outduel and kill you- -yasuo proceeds to say that you just got lucky and now he killed you because he outplayed you- -you had a nice 7 minutes in the game but now if you picked an artilery mage youre pretty much garbage because of his windwall- -Realize that yasuo is just a problematic champion and ban him every game like everyone else-

DeadUnborn2 votes

You are wrong there... he beats most mages, not just artillery XD

To be fair of the 3 artillery mages, ONLY Lux is highly impacted by Yasuo. 3/4ths of Xerath's kit is impossible for Yasuo to block (only E can be blocked by windwall); most of Zigg's skills aren't used for burst either, he rarely combos them so much as setting them up to control area (and his Q has a low cooldown).

Lux is really the only one without top-tier waveclear who RELIES on landing a specific combo to do anything. If Xerath or Ziggs miss Q; they'll just back up and try again in 4~10 seconds (depending on CDR), Xerath especially since he can hit Yasuo from FoW, where he's unlikely to react in time.

IT's great to know all of his counters, when you're in blind pick and can't do 2/3 of those things without knowing he was being picked before hand.

Seems well designed [slayer-jinx-unamused]

Just to clarify, QSS does not remove the knock-up effect but allows you use Flash/Mobility Ability to get out.

The Ashe used QSS then Flash, she didn’t simply stroll out of the knock-up.

DeadUnborn3 votes

Really? that wasn't explained in the video. then it is kind of BS to be honest XD. You could just simply use flash to dodge the tornado without buying qSS then

hhaavviikk4 votes

all this did was show bad yasuo's and other bs really.

  1. running after malzahar brainlesly
  2. annie is bullshit in her own right with the instant AOE stun burst
  3. lvl 12 yasuo vs lvl 14 kayle, obviously kayle would win if it's a battle of right clicks, not to mention her ult is also BS
  4. good play by ashe, but then yasuo came back 30 seconds later and ulted her again, really this only works every so often as flash doesn't have a 30 seconds CD
  5. fighting a swain in a minion wave? really?
420 grams3 votes

So qss the knock up apparently Other than that the video is just saying counter pick him, which is not the same as counter play

DeadUnborn2 votes

Yea I agree. However many people that have no idea how to deal with him might find this useful anyhow. It also recomend taking exhaust against him and using him after he uses ult on you so his damage doesn't get amplyified

Spank the Fox2 votes

The video is also saying don't be a moron and throw all your damage at the windwall.

Also, you saw Malzahar using the voidlings to pop Yas' shield before dumping his whole combo on him.

Hexs Fortune3 votes

At release they touted how this champ Yasuo would be hard to play. Now several years later they need to teach people how to play against him.

Subject 52 votes

Y r the enemy champs like 2 levels ahead of Yasuo? That's usually the sign that they have like a million more kills than he does.

Hayaishi22 votes

Yasuo is easy to counter, he is not as strong as he was on release.

HR5OdeMImE2 votes

Malzahar is not that good against him. I went 5/1 as Malzahar that had a feeding Yasuo on the other team. He bought a QSS and easily 1v1d me running away from my ult and coming back with help of my minions.

Really hard to hit Yasuo with your Q.

Yasuos Q insta kill all your voidlings at once. (In the video he conveniently didnt use Q)

abca982 votes

Oh! I guess then I should stop playing the champions I like so I don't get raped just because he exists.

Counterpick or get fucked, nice advice.

DeadUnborn1 votes

Is as if you only saw the video without reading anything I wrote on the post....

abca982 votes

I support your post, I am saying that RIot themselves say that if you play mages you are asking to lose.

DeadUnborn2 votes

oh ok... yeah that is kind of frustrating

Shiznyte2 votes

summoner 3 is easily counter by summoner 1 just a heads up... and the good Yasuo's know this.

StairCasexd1 votes

I don't get why people struggle with yas, I Lane against him a lot of Kat, it's literally just bait wind wall, dodge empowered Q and poke his sheild before trading with him or you WILL lose the trade. Surprised that it's so bad that they had to make a video guide about it.

You could also just let him outplay himself.

DeadUnborn6 votes

How do you bait his wind wall and poke his shield which characters like Ziggs, Lux or Xerath?

The steam life2 votes

Wow he hard counters some champs shocker. And didn't I explain how xerath isn't a great matchup for yas

DeadUnborn4 votes

not some, MOST. Some isn't a problem, most is, specially when you are looking and 2 and a half entire classes of champs (mages, ADCS and some fighters/tanks)

HalcyonDweller3 votes

Xerath absolutely dumpsters Yasuo. His wind wall only blocks your stun, so you use your Q and W to poke at range and clear the minion wave. Then if he mispositions or wastes wind wall then you stun him.

Not saying Yasuo isn't annoying. he completely is. Fuck yasuo. But I dispute the claim that Xerath does poorly against him. Xerath is my go-to pick when there is a Yasuo on the enemy team.

DeadUnborn2 votes

Sigh...No he doesn´t, at least not during laning phase were it counts http://matchup.gg/matchup/Yasuo/Xerath/MID

He only starts beating up Yasuo later in the game because Yasuo mid severely hampers the teams sieging potential and damage distribution (AD mid). In an isolated state however, Yasuo ROFL-stomps Xerath

HalcyonDweller2 votes

In an isolated state 1v1 vs Yasuo mid I do fine with Xerath. Never had an issue.

As a Xerath main, Yasuo is never a problem for me.

DeadUnborn1 votes

You can't make an argument like that an expect them to be taken seriously. It might be that you are way more experienced with Xerath than most Yasuo's you face. It may be that you winning easy is just your perception and not actually true. On the other hand, I have presented you already with consise/debatable evidence that is objective, as opposed to yours.

Think about it. What stops me from counter arguing with: in my experience, most Yasuos beat Xerath every time I have seen it playing in plat+?

HalcyonDweller3 votes

Speaking objectively, most of Xerath's kit is immune to Yasuo's wind-wall advantage. It's a simple matter of aiming skillshots that aren't projectiles, Q and W are both this so as long as you aim them correctly Yasuo can't counter them. You can't tell me that plat+ players are worse at aiming skillshots than me, that should be impossible.

DeadUnborn2 votes

You fail to realize two things:

  • Xeraths Skillshots are HEAVILY telegraphed. Therefore they are extremely easy to dodge with Yasuo's E and high movement speed. If one stray Q happens to miss you more often than not it will just pop your shield and do no damage during laning phase. Eventually Xerath runs out of mana and gets pushed out of lane

  • Empirically you are wrong: http://matchup.gg/matchup/Yasuo/Xerath/MID

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Having telegraphed skillshots is not a problem if you predict effectively. Easy combo is to use W to force him to juke or dash, aiming it correctly means it will still tag him with the outer edge even if he jukes. Either way you force his movement and if he dashes then you know exactly where he will end up in 0.3 seconds, makes landing Q's work like a charm. Additionally it isn't hard to poke the shield off and then do the actual harass damage on the next spell rotation.

I don't have mana issues with Xerath in lane. Dorans ring plus his passive give me everything I need to waveclear. After getting Lost Chapter it becomes a non-issue and I can harass freely without fear of running OOM.

Empyrically, everyone must be doing it wrong. Because Xerath vs. Yasuo works fine when used correctly.

DeadUnborn2 votes

http://matchup.gg/matchup/Yasuo/Xerath/MID

Or he lets you land W which does no damage with shield and jukes Q

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Then the shield is gone and he's open to harass until he refreshes the shield.

DeadUnborn2 votes

Xeraths W does little damage early and is up every 14 seconds. Yasuo's shield has the same CD as long as he keeps moving... so you are wrong there bud. Even if Xerath dealt some damage he would have to trade pushing power to land a hit and yasuo, at which point xerath has to use his spells just to keep up on CS. Now if you are low elo and have never played against a competent Yasuo that is another story... but this whole discussion is kind of redundant at this point. I already showed you the win rates multiple times. Paired with competent Yasuo and Xerath players Yasuo wins lane by a large margin

http://matchup.gg/matchup/Yasuo/Xerath/MID

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Again, you can out-play your opponent with predictions at any skill level. Yasuo's dash is annoying, but it telegraphs where he will be, and that makes aiming skills against him easy.

Xerath always has to use his skills to keep up in CS, it doesn't matter who the opponent is. Against any opponent, you just aim those skills so they hit minions too.

For the first few levels you can try to poke and harass but it's not a big deal. After a few levels Xerath's damage comes online, and after he gets his first few items (not even complete, just some ap and mana) he stops having problems at all.

Part of the problem people have with Yasuo is when his mobility and wind-wall give him the edge in lane and make him hard to deal with. Even if Xerath doesn't do super well he can simply waveclear at range and start wrecking after he gets a little more AP.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Removed and moved, since we are out of reply space.

Psyrix2 votes

yasuo dumpsters most skillshot reliant, immobile mages because of his inbuilt mobility, as well as the passive flow shield, as well as the windwall xD the crit passive interaction as well as the bonus armor penetration just makes him abit of a pain to handle if it's a good yasuo. Added to that, several ad midlaners will buy a hexdrinker when facing ap so that's yet another shield to cut through or wait out. so burst mages hate yas when he buys that. heavens forbid he also takes barrier. Considering most yasuo's will build phantom dancer (which has a damage reducing passive) that's another pain :). He's generally just annoying to manage. Not impossible, just quite annoying. Katarina is a fine pick into yasuo cuz ur very mobile, and u do a ton of damage... plus u have no resource bar. ur mobility allows u to avoid the windwall as well as the tornado, thus reposition for ur own attack.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

I went back and upvoted your comments to counter the dumbass who downvoted all your comments in our conversation. You had legit arguments, and I don't fault you for thinking that way.

Except for this comment:

{quoted}

http://matchup.gg/matchup/Yasuo/Xerath/MID

For shame dude, that was extremely low effort.

If you don't want to talk about it anymore you can straight up say it and I'll respect that. No need to hammer that evidence that I already looked at.

It don't help your argument to hammer it again, and it don't look good from a rhetorical standpoint.

DeadUnborn1 votes

Don't really care about downvotes but thanks for not being a jerk anyhow

I only answered that because I want you to deal with the win rate sand not strafe

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Aight, fair enough. Sorry for strafing, In my own very personal opinion win-rates are not everything, and they are only useful for broad claims. I think that getting into specifics is much more useful for deciding on a topic.

Now to legitimately address your evidence: Yes, On average at the skill levels that you are citing, Yasuo beats Xerath. But I don't think that applies to every skill level. There are numerous different factors that affect the outcome of the match, including but not limited to:

  1. The mechanical skill level of the Yasuo player

  2. The mechanical skill level of the Xerath player

  3. Jungler pressure

  4. general game knowledge, wave control, map awareness, roaming techniques, etc. Of both players.

Now, with regards to 1 and 2, I would argue that Yasuo player wins harder when he's better than the Xerath, and at equal skill level as well. But if the xerath can make effective use of his range and AoE damage, it won't matter because the Xerath can waveclear for days and wait for picks or just poke Yasuo's squishy teammates from across the screen.

tldr; I think Xerath is a safe pick against Yasuo, and he is perfectly capable of dumpstering* the Yasuo.

_ * So long as the Yasuo is not significantly more skilled with mechanics than the Xerath player._

DeadUnborn1 votes

The mechanical skill level of the Yasuo player

The mechanical skill level of the Xerath player

Jungler pressure

general game knowledge, wave control, map awareness, roaming techniques, etc. Of both players.

EXACTLY my point. All those variables are extraneous to the champion kit, they are decided by the player. Therefore if you use a significant statistical sample you can determine which champion is better because all those variables even out (sometimes in favor of Xerath, other times Yasuo). You can´t make arguments based on player skill because then my counter argument would always be that in which the opposite player could make an even more skillful play and we would end up debating in circles

HalcyonDweller1 votes

BATMAN WOULD JUST DO X! WELL SUPERMAN WOULD JUST DO Y!! WELL THEN BATMAN WOULD JUST DO Z!!!

I see what you mean haha, sorry for arguing in circles.

Looking back I see your original question was about how to out-play Yasuo with champions like Lux and Xerath, want to talk about Xerath in that context now? I have a fair bit of experience and I think I could offer some useful advice at least for Xerath.

DeadUnborn1 votes

It was rhetorical, unless you are a vastly more experienced player than the Yasuo and capitalize on his mistakes you will lose

HalcyonDweller1 votes

To be fair Xerath does have the fallback pattern of waveclearing and poking from range. Applying minion wave management allows you to either keep the wave in range or last-hit under tower if Yasuo pushes it in. You don't have to oughtright beat him if he's that much better, you can just farm safely and then beat him and the rest of his team towards the end of laning phase when he hits his power spikes.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

For the record I hate Yasuo just as much as the next guy, was simply trying to help. Thanks for being a dick about it.

"I'd rather complain about Yasuo than learn anything to be better equipped to play against him."

Got it. I won't waste any more of your time. Seeya.

DeadUnborn1 votes

[vlad-salute] Lol you were the one repeating yourself even though I showed you were wrong.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

You're the one who failed to address my points and instead chose to repeatedly spam links.

DeadUnborn1 votes

Because I don't argue annecdotal evidence. For every point you make like "Xerath can angle his Q so as to hit Yasuo and push wave" I can reply something like "Yasuo can position himself to prevent Xerath from doing that" and so on. Therefore I would rather show you hard evidence like Yasuo's vs Xerath's win rate during laning phase. I already explained how the statistical significance of the sample covers variations like jungle camping, player skill level (good Xerath player vs good Yasuo player), late game scaling and game length and such . Therefore I find your points redundant, since they are only explaining situations in which you are a much skilled xerath player facing less experienced Yasuo players

Hey DeadUnborn,

I'll be locking this thread due to the toxic back-and-forth with other players.

The OP is fine, but the way you are handling comments is clearly creating a problem, so I'm shutting that down.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to visit us on the Discuss the Boards sub-board or our Discord server.
