Why take Tahm top lane?

Not a "cry some more" thread, but of curiosity. Why would you take Tahm Kench top lane? I see many top laners are either tanks who ramp up faster or early game engagers looking for early blood. His ultimate ability requires a partner to use to its fullest potential.

His passive works really well with all his abilities. His q has great CC and range at that! his devour has crazy good scaling. i mean there are better top lanes, but Tahm does work well in Top!

After attempting to top lane Kench again, I think I'll say most champs are better at top lane than Tahm. I can't see how he's intended to be a solo laner when he's on a support budget. Even Riot designed him to not have the tools most tanks have. I really want to like Tahm top, but so far no luck at all.

You should try bruiser tahm man, it's hella fun.

Build: item 3153 > item 3065 / item 3143 / item 3110 > item 3078 > item 3143 / item 3065 / item 3110 > item 3083

Get Merc treads / Alacricity / Tabis, but Mercs are most of the time better because of the Tenacity.

item 3153 doesn't quite jive with Tahm's kit, brother.

Have you tried an MPen oriented build yet?

item 3020 item 3136 item 3110 item 3068 item 3091 seems to scale pretty well while keeping you beefy.

You do miss out on some attack speed early, but you could probably take Attack Speed Quints (with Hybrid/Magic Pen marks) to make up for that.

Which of those items would you get first?

It would probably depend on the lane. Haunting Guise is a nice early pickup due to it's cost efficiency, cheap components, and good early-game stats. Afterwards, you could easily build Frozen Heart or Sunfire Cape against AD opponents or Abyssal Scepter (or Spirit Visage or Wit's End) against AP opponents.

Tahm Kench seems like he would scale primarily off of magic penetration, CDR, and defensive stats (primarily health, resistances secondary). Since his abilities have low AP ratios but high base damage (including a massive percent-health damage ability), building penetration and lowering his cooldowns seems like it would take advantage of his strengths.

This was mostly just me brainstorming though; I've been waiting for Tahm Kench to go on free week so I could try him before deciding whether or not I wanted to purchase him.

Attack speed to stack passive, more %dmg, he has a long auto attack range compared to other melees, an extra slow to close the gap as he isnt mobile in a traditional sense and lifesteal doesnt really hurt him.

Its not like you need to build him AP even if he has Ap scaling when he can scale of on high HP and is R passive.

Shen is another example of a champ that might want Blade simply because he doesnt really synergize with AP items and synergizes well with attack speed.

I saw someone take him as a top lane bruiser against a Tryndamere and I have to say it was way more effective than I was expecting. He would trade with trynd and when trynd went undying he would just eat him then spit him out and finish him off. It had to have been super frustrating for the trynd but it was hilarious to us.

Melee champions can't trade with Tahm because Tahm just needs to AA Q AA and eat the enemy to nearly kill them. When they leave Tahm's belly, he Qs again for the stun and continues AAing. His AA has 200 range, the highest AA range of all melee champs.

You do realize devouring an enemy removes the stacks, right?
