This season has been by far the most toxic season in the history of LoL.

Now I can't say I'm smart enough to know what exactly happened to cause this, whether it was somehow roll selection or perhaps autofill or maybe even something as simple as the state of game balance, but something has changed and player behavior has been at an all time low.

You'd think player behavior would have gotten better with all the effort Riot put into banning players with toxic attitudes but I can't even remember the last match I've had where I didn't feel like I should report someone. Just off the top of my head my past 10 matches included people ragequitting after one death, people sitting at fountain spamming open because surrender failed, people telling other to kill themselves, and while technically not a match I had to dodge a game because right off the bat my entire lobby had apparently had a previous match together and were absolutely frothing at the mouth.

I swear just last season this sort of behavior was something that rarely happens in my matches, but now it's basically non-stop clownshoes.

Get me out.

It hasn't actually changed that much. I've taken statistics of ranked toxicity in my games (predominately in Gold) through various seasons (generally 100+ games, I only have S7 statistics from ~90 games so far, though.)

The tier of toxicity has gone up a little - there's now more medium toxicity (repeated flaming, mostly) instead of minor toxicity (minor flaming, report-calling, negativity), but otherwise the numbers are very similar.

Comparing S7 to S5:

  • No toxicity in ~27% of games in both seasons (27.1% in S5, 27.6% in S7).
  • High levels of toxicity (AFKs, ragequits, trolls, high levels of flaming, death threats, etc.) in ~20% of games in both seasons. (19.5% in S5, 20.7% in S7)
  • Medium toxicity increased from 28.8% in S5 to 31% S7.
  • Minor toxicity decreased from 24.6% to 20.7% to compensate.

The numbers aren't really different enough to be more than minor error from the small sample sizes.

This game sucked ass in S6 because of the constant class reworks and meta shifts and dynamic queue and rogues gallery of broken champions, numbers too high to ban. LCS was the stalest its ever been despite Riot tripping over themselves trying to make it flashy.

People thought that the removal of DQ and the assassin rework would help alleviate that. Well, now you don't play ranked vs 5-mans but the meta is fucking shit anyways so gl having fun.

Role selection.

That's why.

This is what happens when riot keeps introducing systems that breed toxicity even when we, the players, tell them this will happen when we saw the changes for preseason 6.

Called it a year and a half ago, we've been right in every regard with our concerns related to the last year and a halfs worth of changes. Riot shoulda just listened to the thousands and millions of us who said these things would happen.

I don't really understand what role selection has to do with it..

If anything it's probably because armor pen is strong now so the entire game is in Riven edge mode in combination with the game just aging so there's less patience had

Role selection is a process that inherently discourages communication and strategy formation.

Teams that lack these things tend to be more toxic towards one another.

They lacked it back then too.

They did indeed, but they weren't discouraged from learning how to by having an automated system attempt to handle it for them.

In the past 2 weeks I've had 1 person rage quit and no one be toxic enough for a report so it depends on something else.

Autofill creates toxicity and adcs becoming a meme can breed toxicity as well. Since ADCs are a vital role in LoL, when they rq, it spreads like wild fire

Role select creates toxicity by making people expect to get their way.

you say this, but I have a good feeling you don't actually have any data to back that claim. The games you play isn't an indication of the game as a whole.

I've played this game since season one and I've rarely ever felt the need to report someone. Now it feels like I've been reporting at least one person every match.

Dynikus3 votes

Again, that's not really an indication of anything. Your games are a small blip in the overall percentage of games played. Unless riot actually shows data for the number of reports or bans increasing, it's just an example of availability heuristic. You see it more, so you assume everyone does.

My Sea Cow1 votes

I agree with TheLittlestLuLu...I've has to report far more people then I had to before. I've never ever had people tell me to drink clorox all because I went off to ward as a support and then wouldn't verbally fight with them when they started yelling at me. Don't get me wrong I've had some good matches but I've had a lot of bad ones and more bad then good.

Maybe it's certain elos...but I find there are so many more toxic players out there now.

Dynikus1 votes

I saw that back in season 1 too though. I'm not saying it's not possible that the game has more toxic players, but you also have to take into consideration that the number of players league has has grown significantly since then as well. While the number of toxic assholes might have gone up, I'm not sure the percentage has. Most of my games though I don't really see that much. I might report someone once every 10-15 games or so.

My Sea Cow1 votes

Just seems odd that out of the last 10 games 9 of them I had someone on my team flaming someone and that one good game for me the enemy team had the flamer. It could have been just bad luck but I've heard more then a couple people complain

dakota saturn1 votes

I disagree - I can only offer anectodal evidence, but I haven't had a lot of people being outright flamers and trolls even in my crappy elo, and even when I pick stupid champions like LeBlanc support, Janna mid, or Evelynn top.

There were prior seasons where it wasn't uncommon to have intentional feeders, people who pick revive/ghost karma and run down mid, and people being total pricks in chat with absolutely zero provokation.

This season and the last have been tame in comparison. Sure you'll get an int feeder or someone who can't keep their mouth closed and tilt the team, but more often than not, most teams just don't talk until mid game when grouping becomes important.

umm i don't feel this way at all... for me, this season has been a lot better, obviously not balance wise season 3 and 4 were the best for that.. (i didn't place season 1 or 2 so i cant comment on that) but it seems WAY better to me that season 5 and 6. i can actually choose support as a secondary role and not get it 100% of the time like in season 6 when i got it 30 games in a row before i game up on ever putting it as an option (I'm NOT exaggerating if you care enough to check my ranked games its in match history it WAS THIRTY games)

DoktorKaiser1 votes

So true, these days I literally honor the entire team if they werent toxic where as it used to be a thing you give to very very friendly people...

Proxy3451 votes

The only real cure for toxic chat is to add a automatic mute option in settings to make the toxic people stfu before the game even starts lol Problem solved and everyone is happy.

SanKakU1 votes

It's definitely auto-fill plus the behind-the-scenes invisible stuff that isn't physical.

Profirix1 votes

I'm pretty sure its about the same. I haven't noticed any real difference in the amount of toxicity. You are likely running into a string of toxic players and using the availability heuristic to falsely attribute it to an increasing frequency when there really isn't much of a change.

I will however acknowledge that climbing this season has been one of the worst league experiences I have ever had. I wouldn't be surprised if there are people who stop really caring about their rank because no matter what they do they just can't climb out of their personal hells.

Ever since riot removed the tribunal, community attitude has been getting worse.

Yaskamasandwich1 votes

Wait until next season, that will be the worst and most toxic state League has been in. That is until the next season after that and so on. The cycle of seasons continues, they will suck, we will cry.

Incarceration1 votes

It's also funny how people who have a drastically lower rank than you, proceed to spam ping you, and they are doing much less work, have the worse kda, and fails at their champion. Like who the fuck fails at kiting with Caitlyn?

Dominick Destine1 votes

S6 (Dynamic Queue) was the worst season.

I doubt anything will ever match how utter rtded putting an organized 5-man team against a team of 1-1-1-1-1..... what was Riot thinking?
