Nerf to Malzahar is the biggest joke ever. He needs buffs/changes not nerfs

Malzahar

  • Null Zone (W) damage lowered to 4/4.5/5/5.5/6% of max health per second from 4/5/6/7/8%

I have mained Malzahar since season 3 but I have dropped him once I reached Diamond 2. The higher you get, the more unplayable the champ becomes and I will explain the inherent weaknesses of his kit that make him useless the higher you get and will talk about all the indirect nerfs he received the past months. I am not going to talk about the things everybody already knows about him, but rather about details that make a huge difference.

Kit problems

  • He is relatively weak pre 6. High mana costs and high cooldowns and no cc. The voidlings and his E are uncontrollable and sometimes very random making you lose cs and mana, or push when you don't want to. All his spells are low/midrange.
  • At higher eelo you get punished pretty hard for picking an immobile midlaner.
  • His Q becomes impossible to hit further in the game and is therefore a useless poke ability. The missile speed and cast time is pretty low. It is very predictable and every champ with some sort of speed or dash can easily dodge it. The lack of range is also a problem. If he moves in to try and land a Q most champs nowadays can engage on him and he has no escapes.
  • Aside from his ult he has no cc to keep champs on his pool. It also has a cast time not like Morgana's pool that does instant damage. So you can walk out of his W without taking damage if again you have any sort of speed or dash. You must be pretty dumb to walk over it.
  • His E has low range. You can't walk up to someone to put your E on him and disengage because you don't have speed, dashes, cc, other disengage
  • Thus, to hit his Q and W (and most of the times his E as well) you need team mates to cc the enemy.
  • QSS. Literally his bane. This item also makes him useless as a splitpusher. If the enemy buys it he has 0% chance to win a 1 vs 1 situation.

Recent indirect nerfs to Malzahar

  • Tahm Kench. He eats his ally and brings him to safety out of the tether range
  • Bard ult
  • Kindred ult. They can save any teammate.
  • Sterak's Cage. Also his bane. Malz is a onetrick pony and if his burst gets negated he is useless
  • Kallista can AA while suppressed
  • Introduction of chilling smite made him even more easy to gank
  • Overall APC nerfs due to increase in item prices and higher MR items
  • Lost access to mana(regen) in the mastery tree if he gets DFT
  • Every new champ has mobility so they can easily dodge his Q and W. He has no ways to get to his enemies
  • MS items like Luden's Echo and recently Lichbane gave APC's more access to speed making Q and W easier to dodge
  • Buff to QSS making it an even more accessible and core item for many AD champs
  • Buff to RoA. There are other champs who make better use of RoA than Malz. This is something some people will disagree on but I almost never buy RoA on Malz. For me it is not his core item but with the recent buff and overall nerfs to other AP items I feel like I am being pushed to buy something on him I don't like.
  • Luden's Echo is also bad on him. He is NOT a poke champ. He needs to stay in backline and melt the divers and juggernauts.

Meta nerfs to Malzahar

  • Buffs to Lux
  • Azir's existence
  • Rework to GP
  • Leblanc/Kassadin are strong picks atm
  • Buffs to Zed. Once he buys QSS its over.
  • Buffs to Zilean. His ult counters Malzahar pretty hard.

Why the W nerf makes no sense

  • Null Zone (W) damage lowered to 4/4.5/5/5.5/6% of max health per second from 4/5/6/7/8%

Basically this: http://imgur.com/6hssqwx source: http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/stats/malzahar

His W is the last ability you max. From 20-25m until 45m in the game his winrate declines drastically while his W does more damage the longer the game takes. At first sight this is a paradox. Why does a champs winrate declines while his kit is meant to melt almost anyone and deal more damage later in the game? Its because of all the inherent weaknesses of his kit I talked about earlier. They become obvious during teamfights, stalls in midlane, while splitpushing etc, when poking becomes important etc etc. Nerfing his W is pointless because it will hardly affect his winrate and will make him an even worse lategame champ while hitting his core identity of a tank melter. Only his E benefits from the keystone but it has low/midrange and is not his main source of damage.

TL;DR So the only reason his winrate has rose is because games tend to end faster therefore you don't enter mid/lategame where his kit will start to show a lot of inherent weaknesses and indirect nerfs will become more noticeable. Also at higher eelo he is still a bad champ.

malz doesnt need nerfs but he definitely doesn't need buffs

also that graph is not helping your argument most games end at the 25 minute mark

I don't get the point of that chart. So he has an over-50% win rate at all points in the game. What's the problem? Champions have power spikes and power curves. Malzahar is within the top 5 in terms of winrate, with an around 4-6% pick rate (which isn't bad), and has consistently been strong. He's certainly not weak.

I will say though, I don't get the point of the W nerfs. If he has issues, his tank-shredding is not one of them.

over 50% winrate overall. Once you pass Gold his winrate starts to drop a lot

I agree that malzahar is very weak at the moment. If Riot nerfs the damage on his w, they should compensate by making it slow targets.

malzahar is shit mainly due to his mana cost

his E gives 0 mana after killing 6 creeps at lvl 1, and 36 mana at rank 5 (lvl 9) assuming he doesn't use other spells to clear the wave his W costs 90 mana at lvl 1 for no reason because it does no damage to creeps and malzahar can't use it to stomp you before lvl 6.

But he can wreck you in 1 combo at 6. He needs about 5 spells to kill you. He just has to get his visions on you once past 6 and then he is able to just 1 combo you dead. So yea he is getting nerfs to his late game so he isn't a monster if you build defense.

Just to jump in, his E is not really meant to be an infinite mana tool. It's there to help mitigate his costs, not negate them.

but it mitigate nothing.. it gives 0 mana at lvl 1, so if you use W at lvl 1 you lost 90 mana for no reasons, you didn't oppressed the enemy nor pushing him to the tower.

Most people won't care about Malz because he is not a popular champ. He has a low pickrate, nobody ever complains about him and the higher eelo you get the worse he performs because people know how to buy QSS yet Riot thinks he needs nerfs

it hurts my head to see people calling malzahar shit and saying he needs buffs

he's one of the most balanced champions, face it already

I agree. When I first started playing League I picked up talon, malzahar, and kennen. But all of these champs have either been nerfed directly or indirectly or both. With the new AD item changes Talon is actually better to play now so I can take that one off my list.

I dropped malzahar because I switched to being a jungle main and if there was an enemy midlane who had no escapes the moment they pushed the lane I was there to gank. And malzahar is a lane pushing mage so he's just out of luck and gets ganked often and it sucks. New champions being released, all of them having high mobility just screws him over that much more.

Malzarhar is a lot like jarvin and their kits just need reworks. Being honest I like most of Malzahar's kit but his Q feels worthless and I felt better maxing my W before my Q because it helped push waves faster and ulting people on it was effective. The Q is also telegraphable and is easy to walk or dash out of, but no one dashes out of the Q they just dash towards you.

His ultimate is terrible and it just gimps him especially late game. He's basically the old win nao you either win in the first 30 minutes or you lose.

I'd have more to say about him but you've already said most of it so I won't repeat that here.

Nothing says a champion is "shit" like a 54% win rate in Diamond, 56% win rate in Master, and an over 60% win rate in Challenger.

Very well thought out. Nails it imo

I agree with the argument being made but the points are incorrect.

Malzahar poking or staying behind is completely playstyle and circumstance based. You can still get all the mana regen masteries if you take DFT His pool is instant cast Max W second or first in the jungle

iTaLenTZ2 votes

Instant cast, but not instant damage. It takes 0,25s I believe to start dealing damage

Solution: Play AD Malz

He's a 55% win rate champ that is easy to play and shits on the popular champs. Any buffs would push him over the top and would make him completely broken. These boards are a joke

Yes, his win rate falls off the later the game goes. No shit. He's an early/mid game champ. Not every champ has to be strong at all points of the game
