I main support, and have 3 points I'd like to make.
First, when I say "main support," I mean I select fill thinking that option would provide me with a variety of roles. This is not the case, since when I fill, I am support 98% of the time.
Second, when I support, I leave tanking to someone else. I don't own Blitzcrank, and he seems like the only tanky support that can keep up, since landing his combo essentially stun locks the target, allowing for rapid health draining. Other tank supports can't take the beating early game, and don't have such kits to make up for the defense.
Third, since supports like Lulu and Soraka don't seem viable anymore (Lulu lacks damage to defend herself if she's caught, and Soraka has to give up her own health to heal the carry, putting herself at risk with her 0.9 HP Regen), I break the meta. Here's a small list of which champions I play as support, and a little reasoning.
Teemo: He can blind the enemy carry, and his ult can be considered a built in sight stone.
Veigar: His rework gives him bonus ap just by hitting champions with his spells, so he can keep up in the ap race. Combine that with his stun and his other powerful spells and you can force your opponent's out of lane, or get your carry fed easily with set up kills.
Twisted Fate: His old passive made him the perfect support, providing every ally more cash, but now he's less known as one. Truth is, he's still good. He has plenty of CC under his belt, he can snipe using his Q for risk free tower diving, and when the carry is away, he can use his passive to help catch up on gold income.
These are a mere few. Since they aren't meant for supporting, using them gives benefits. For one, you can still be an offensive player mid game through late game. You still have offensive abilities and stats, so you won't be a pushover later.
Also, if it's draft pick, the enemy may try countering you only to realize that you're not their lane opponent, and your teammate can instead counterpick them.
If done well and with certain champions, it can also anger the other team. Obviously it's not good to troll, but breaking the meta isn't punishable. They will just get mad because you aren't playing by their rulebook, and it will keep them off their A-game. Remember, you did nothing wrong, so don't feel bad about it.
