gnar q problem

i'm new to gnar and i've having a problem using his q in both his mini forms and mega form, in his mini form it doesn't go the full distance sometime, is both suppose to hit the first few minons or champions before returning cause i notice that it becomes really short if i use it infront of minions. in his mega form i assume minions block his skill shot like how blitz skill shot is blocked by minions.
