Is Rengar Unbalanced or Just Anti-Fun?

I always stumble over People and Threads saying that Rengar is unbalanced and I wondered why that is, because I personally consider him to have definite counterplay possibilities and predictability.

I usually play very safe farming champions in the toplane like Singed, Mundo or Alistar or most of the tank junglers out there like Maokai or Amumu. My experience with them was that I usually was a really big obstacle for Rengar to overcome. Sweeper is available most of the time and in the best case scenario I even have a pink and before Rengar is able to jump I and the support are permahugging potential targets for Rengar so that when he actually jumps on them, he gets CCd instantly and usually dies.

Another thing I've experienced is that Rengar has a feast-or-famine playstyle and more often or not the latter is the case. By playing safe and normally be tanky like pointed out above and planting pinks whenever I come back to lane if it was destroyed has allowed me to force Rengar to either gank other lanes or to farm in his jungle. Most of the time he just wastes his ult and retreats but sometimes they even get overzealous and try risky dives that usually ends up with them dying.

With Rengar being really snowball-reliant and reliant on his teammates being on the same page with him I usually have no problems playing against Rengar - actually, most of the times the opposite is the case. If I can expect the enemy Rengar to go top I usually pick counters like Malphite and farm until I have finished some items, at which point I can just run at him him and force him to fight me where he definitely will lose. When he is missing, you just have to communicate it to your teammates properly and you are fine most of the times.

And even though this is my opinion, I have to agree that he is really dangerous once all conditions for him to steamroll are fulfilled. Yet I have to underline that most of the ADCs that complain about being assassinated or any other people that get killed by him all the time just haven't played safe enough and have allowed him to snowball in the first place. When you play with more friends and pay attention to the things I have pointed out above, especially now that Pentaque is available you will quickly realize that handling him is really easy most of the time.

Yet there are still people complaining about him and I think the reason for that is that it's just not fun to play against a fed Rengar. Sure, he has to get rolling first but most of the time people are just not coordinated and play really aggressive which ends up in an assassination fiesta by Rengar that creates the illusion of lacking counterplay. Rengar feasts on disorganization and the more frustrated you get at him and the more you let yourself be controlled by your emotions, the more fed he'll get and the more dangerous he will become, killing you over, and over, and over....

The problem of him being frustrating to play against and being anti-fun is in my opinion the biggest problem Rengar has with his kit since after all you are supposed to have fun with this game.

What I'm asking is if a champion being unfun justifies them being nerfed. I for my part had a collective hate against Riven for a long time for example but with the time I changed my playstyle to more tanky, passive champions and found champions and ways to specifically counter her. Now I think that she is relatively weak as a champion with all the juggernauts, Fiora and Jax getting stronger and I think she definitely deserved the buff she has reveived lately and I feel sorry for all Riven players that everyone is hating on it and that I was actually a part of that angered mob of keyboard warriors.

I just find it sad that more and more champions are nerfed to the point of being worse than average and kept there just because their kits are unfun to play against if you don't know how to play against them properly. Examples are Teemo, Yorick, Kata and Riven. And other champions like her seem to be joining those ranks too every few months or so.
