Yes, we are far from EA, anyone comparing them to EA is ridiculous, that said putting such a thing behind a paywall is pretty ridiculous as well.
This a function that people have been asking for since 2011, this could have been added for players who have an excess of BE, or added it as a chroma, why does it need to be behind a paywall with no option to unlock it besides paying?
DotA 2 is free and I'm pretty sure all of the champions are permanently unlocked for free. HotS is also free and it's significantly easier to gets skins and other cosmetics in HotS for free.

Ahri/Yasuo players dont get to masturbate to new LC$ montages for their champions anymore so they feel disenfranchised and thus Riot's losing out on skin sales and wants to take it out on the rest of us.
Don't try to give them logic, they don't listen.
I am on Riot's side 99% of the time when they release things that cost money. But having to pay to show off achievements is too far.

no it's not about it being free to play, it's bad on principle. but other companies are doing it and people paid GOOD MONEY for it, so rito will do it too.

In my Biased opinion, This is a way for Riot to generate profit from OTP and dedicated Mains, as they have a hard cap on Skin sales for that kind of player. I don't personally like the look of it, I am willing to wait and see the full implementation and will reserve judgment until that happens.
I believe its possibly viable as a positive, but to do so requires the gains from the Eternal system to be consistently viewed as worth the $. If I was a Red, I would ensure that on launch there is a "Eternal" Skin line ready to go for each and every one of the games champions. One that tied to the Eternal but clearly represented the champions thematic as well. That's a massive undertaking on a scale never done prior, but if properly implemented the potential Gains over several Years would pay for it.
Otherwise it needs to just be low cost so that its just an additional way to express in game dedication and pride in your achievements.
Anything else is shit IMO and not worth supporting. Gut reaction for me is negative but I am willing to wait to see full implementation.

Just make eternals cost ORANGE ESSENCE alongside RP! There CASE CLOSED you have to choose whether you want to craft a shiny "new" skin or achievements for your favorite champion(s). And if you want both? "Aw shucks, guess ill just buy a couple more boxes, i do not have enough time to wait for my free loot box to be ready and bother to S rank a game , and then you get this ward skin you reaaaaaly wanted for the longest time so you need essence for that too..
Easy peasy.
(oh and just a quick note: the eternals would not drop from boxes, that is just way too much RNG , instead you would buy em off the store shelves as you would with rp)
