AFK partial solution

I think most or at least some of us have played DOTA, so I'm surprised I haven't seen it posted here before. When a team mate AFK's in DOTA, another team mate can just take over control of that character. I know it's not a perfect solution, and your team is still gimped, but I would rather have a half assed split pushing anything, then nothing at all.
