Why the "it will all even out eventually" is a bad argument for trolls and afks losing lp's

slippykitten··162 votes·9,104 views

Riots official statement on why they don't do anything to compensate players for having an afk or being trolled is that eventually the other team will have the same scenario and it will all end up evenly.

**This is not only lazy, but it is bad math. **

Let me use a coin for an example, if you flip a coin x amount of times, you would expect to have an even number of heads and tails, but you wont. Do it, pick any number of flips greater than 10 randomly and see if you get the same number of heads as you do tails. You probably won't. If you kept flipping infinitely, you would eventually hit an even number, but it would likely take thousands of flips. This is because the probability of getting a heads or tails is 50/50 no matter how many times you flipped. If you get heads 1,000 times in a row, your next flip still has a 50/50 shot of being heads, and there is no guarantee that this will even out in a reasonable amount of time.

This is exponentially more problematic when you stick 10 variables into the equation instead of two. Setting aside all other factors (which are already vast) and only looking at the probability of having a troll or afk on your team, it is statistically unreasonable to say that you will get exactly the same amount of trolls or afks on your teams as on the enemy teams in a reasonable amount of games. Without doing all the math here, it would take tens of thousands of games to feel stastifically confident that each team would have an even amount of afk's or trolls.

This means that some players are unfairly benefiting from this and others are unfairly hindered by it. This problem creates other problems, as if it takes longer for players to reach their actual rank, then they are unfairly impacting the games they are in, creating scenarios where other players win or lose games they should not have.

**At the end of the day, this means that matchmaking is a crapshoot. **

tl;dr - For a person of even reasonable intelligence to suggest that it's ok to have afk's and trolls, because you are statistically likely to even out in the end, is intentionally dishonest. Essentially, Riot is intentionally deceiving their playerbase to avoid addressing gamebreaking problems, and that isn't ok.

Edit A lot of people have been pointing out that you are more likely to have the troll on the enemy team than you're own. I'll point out two important points on that:

  1. That's only true in an extremely large sample pool. Once again, this is the gamblers fallacy. Yes, if you are not afk or trolling, then over 1000's of games, you will have had more on the enemy team than you're own, but it is still statistically possible to have 100 consecutive games where you were the one trolled or afked on.

and much more importantly 2. This doesnt make it ok. You are only pointing out how trolls and afk's may artificially inflate someones elo, which is still BAD! This still negatively impacts players, makes the game less fun, and destroys matchmaking.

**Trolls and afk's will never "even out" for the average player to where their influence was nil, and it is not ok to do nothing about them. **

Edit 2

A very much related problem - Riot has responded to over 50 posts that have less people posting on them as this one. When a company cares more about their PR then their actual players, it's hard to believe they are doing something about it.

No one is saying that it is "Ok" to have Trolls/AFKs/Feeders, just that it happens but not more than it happens to other people. So if you can't climb, they are not the problem, you are. Ultimately you are the only thing that can change, so why waste energy on anything else?

The problem is that for any person to reach the number of games to satisfy that, they would have already died of old age. That's my point. Yes, the numbers will eventually even out, but that eventually is WAYYYYYYYY too many games to expect a player to be able to complete.

How many do you think that unreasonable number is?

If it takes Riot even 100 games to find your proper rank, it's too many. That's 100 games unfairly matched and 900 other players negatively impacted. And 100 games won't even come close to satisfying the law of large numbers.

Then present a reasonable idea to improve it rather than pointing out and accusing RIOT and other players of being dishonest.

While you have a fair point, We are the community not the game designing company. If we agree there is a problem with the game it's Riot's job, literally their job, to look into it, agree/disagree, and act accordingly.

It's not that black and white though. It is sensible to criticise a car company for not being as environmentally friendly as they could be. It is not really sensible however, to criticise a car company because they do not yet have solar powered hover cars that can cross the atlantic drive at night and merely costs 100$, despite the fact that this is still, technically, their job.

This is more or less the same, even though it's not quite as obvious why this is so difficult to achieve. The highest standard to a ranking system is that it is not abusable. That means it has to be (to some extent) a simple system; in this case based merely on the end result of the game and mostly unknown and noninteractive variables... And with players that themselves play inconsistently well, that inevitably leads to a large number of games that have to be played regardless of trolls and afks.

Trolls and afks thus only increase that number to a small extent.

Puppet33r2 votes

That "car company" hasn't done anything to improve actual ranked experience for a very long time and seem to only care that players don't have a potty mouth. I mean, it can't be that hard to automatically find a player who never connected or was afk for the whole game as he didn't move and never bought any items. And yet others suffer full lp loss and those who won this 4v5 get their full lp gain. I mean I can understand how it can be abuseable to soften lp loss for a team where someone goes afk in the middle of the game, but never connecting is easilty fixed. Dota 2 already has a system for it. How hard can it be to simply copy it?

Large numbers. Do you know how many hours of game play 100 games is. With a minimum of a 20 min game every time that's 2000 minutes, 33 hours. Takes a bit more than a week. BUT there is a chance there is a troll on your team EVERY game. Your garenteed To run into trolls in those 109 games. It's impossible to be accurate when they judge your individual skill based on a teams performance.

The time investment argument doesn't matter since the seasons are like 7 months long. Plenty of time to take your time and do it right.

There is chance there is a troll in every game, but only a 45% chance that they are on your team and a 56% chance they are on the other team.

It's just honestly easier to try and fix your own mistakes and raise your winrate by 10%, than to complain about that the world isn't fair.

You do realize that some of the games your play before you even get into champion select are rigged due to mmr right? You can get a team with 4 people at 1000 and one person at 1300 to balance out the other team of all 1150

I ain't scared of no 300 MMR.

In all seriousness, that is unlikely to happen often enough to really make a difference in a 100 - 200 game series. Also, they are capable of having an off game, internet issues, a feeder/troll/AFK on their team.

Most people have daily lives to get to... Chop that 7 months into a couple hours of game play a day, if you feel up for it every single day at every single moment of your free time, and you still wouldn't have enough time.

I only have time for a few games a week, but I am comfortably climbing. I see feeders and everything else on my team and the enemy team. The thing is, I don't think Riot needs to fix them. In fact, if they fixed them, it would be harder to climb as a big part of my strat's are to figure out who is weak on the other team and exploit the hell out of them. Since the other team has a higher chance of getting players that will rage or are not as mechanically good, you can exploit them to increase your winrate.

Ultimately, If you don't have enough time to devote to Ranked to make it worth it, just play normals. They are literally the same thing, except there is much less stress.

I agree that Riot needs to work out a better system to deal with trolls/afkers in ranked.

I used to agree with your math until I really dug into the statistics. The fact is that because you know that you will never troll your team that puts the odds in your favor since the enemy team has 5 possible trolls and your team only has 4 (making the odds closer to 60/40 rather than 50/50.) If you do the math the chance of you getting more trolls on your team than the other team drops off to less than 1% after 20+ games. Granted, 1% is still a lot with a player base of millions but these odds drop more and more with each game you play.

Matchmaking still is a crap shoot in that you can't win every game because you are only 1 of 10 people playing but it isn't near as bad as you seem to think. Some games no matter how well you play you will lose and some games no matter how badly you play you will win, what matters is how you impact the ones that fall between those two extremes.

AMYS GRAVE4 votes

odds of having troll on their team q= 5/9 vs p= 4/9 on yours

np is average number of games won due to afk/troll nq is average number of games lost due to afk/troll

but the variance on that is npq which is over 2x greater than the difference between the two. playing more games increases the variance too, so that doesn't help. The variance on the mean being so large shows that there are a significant number of players who lose more games to afk/trolls than win. More people are climbing than falling because of this but that doesn't mean that some people aren't falling.

The fact that rates of afk/trolls are so low means that this happens far more infrequently than this simplified model implies, so the overall impact is somewhat low. You can't say that the number of trolls an individual will get is lower than on the enemy team, that is only true for the community average, but you can say that the afk/trolls are hardly a deciding factor.

If you are going to talk about the variance, you'll have to talk about the actual chances. You are calculating with exactly one troll every game.

If p is the chance that any given player is not a troll, then the odds of having at least one troll on your team is (1-p^4), while the chance of having at least one troll on the enemy team is (1-p^5). The variance now actually depends on p; and as p becomes larger, the variance also becomes smaller.

You forgot the smurf factor is greater for the enemy team which offsets the trolls, you also forgot it is really important as to in which games you have a troll for have a smurf, or have an afk, or a disconnect the problem is when you add it all up it is a fact some people get screwed irregardless of averages. Like having your d/c or troll in a match your team gets crushed and was going to lose any way doesn't matter, as opposed to having your mid qq and quit in a game you were stomping because he didn't get a blue buff turning a win to a loss is very different impact yet in both cases it was an afk stats wise.

Sad part is this is simple math and common sense flip a coin 50 times a set perform 20 sets and then tell me how many set had the same results...... Then expand your numbers and under stand what some players face in this horrendous ranking system.

Okay Mr Genius - here's the math.

Assumptions:

  1. Summoner's rift
  2. One troll/afk per game
  3. You are not the troll/afk

You have 4/9 chances of having a troll/afk on your team. The enemy has 5/9 chances of having a troll/afk on their team.

Because the chances of a toll/afk on the opposite team is higher than the chances of having a troll/afk on your own team, it is reasonable to say it will even out sooner rather than later.

The difference from your coin scenario is there's an equal chance of flipping heads or tails; however, this is not the case in summoner's rift.

TheOmegaBear098 votes

Here's the problem with your assumptions. There is not one troll/afk per game. Some games there are 0, some games there are many.

The coin analogy is actually correct, because each of the other 9 players in the game has the same chance of being a troll/afk. So it's like flipping a coin 9 times instead of just placing one variable in one of 9 spaces. And while yes, it is slightly more likely that the other team will have one and not yours (assuming you're not the troll/afk) what the OP says (and I completely forget the name of this phenomenon, but there is one) is unfortunately true and it's pretty much a gamble every time you play.

fattyhotdogs4 votes

There is still 5 coins being flipped on the enemy team compared to 4 coins on your team. If 'heads' = Troll, then you're gonna get more heads on the enemy team.

Lets not leave out series/promotion games carrying all the weight in ranked.

Maybe the number of AFK games evens out after hundreds of games, but there is absolutely no math that is going to change the fact that you could get unlucky and get AFKs more frequently during promotion/series matches when winning matters the most.

You could technically get stuck forever in the same division if you kept getting AFKs only during your promos and weren't able to carry out of a 4v5. Example:

You play a dozen games, win some, lose some... get to promos: Game #1 - You get an AFK on your team from the start. 4v5 game, you lose Game #2 - You do really well but bot lane feeds like mad, then argues with each other all game, you lose Promos over.

You play a handful more games, win some, lose some... get back to promos: Game #1 - One of your teammates has connection problems and constantly D/Cs at random times. Late game he D/Cs during an important Baron fight and your team gets aced, you lose. Game #2 - You win Game #3 - Someone on your team decides to troll and does everything they can to screw your team over. (feeding, stealing CS and kills, leeching experience, afking during team fights, etc), you lose.

So here you go... You've played dozens and dozens of games... climbed your way up to promos twice, and both times got unlucky and are stuck at the same ELO. Due to no fault of your own, you are doomed to be in the same division for all eternity.

This is false. you only lose more LP than you gain if league's backend MMR is locer than the MMMR of your tier. get a win sterak, like 3 or 4, and the reverse begins to be true

Yeah I can believe this, I've had about an even amount of trolls on my team as on the enemy team, but the amount of times I've had an afk to the enemy team having an afk is vastly different.

I mean, the enemy team having an afk is a very rare thing, it does happen but not all too often for me. But me having an afk? I've gone on streaks of 4v5s before, like 3-4 games ina row where I have an afk, and not like someone quit mid match due to harassment or just being a child (which does happen, but it's not the usual case), it's almost always just someone never connecting in the first place.

The disparity between afks on my team to afks on the enemy team is vast, and I know plenty of people reading this will just think "oh he's just overreacting," or "afks on his team just stand out more," but that's simply false. Like I said, I've gone on streaks of 4v5s before, multiple games ina row where I've been down a teammate, but I have NEVER had multiple games of 4v5s with the enemy team being down someone in a row, they are honestly few and far between.

Well done with a correct analysis beyond "HUR DUR 55 > 45" without thinking that you would need billions of iterations to make that advantage noticeable...

Ariel the Cruel4 votes

Here's some thoughts.

there are 3 factors that disagree with the proposed notion.

  • Law of large numbers Which basically says what you see in a small number of games, doesn't necessarily reflect what you will see in a lot of game. You can get an AFK/Troll 20 games in a row, but still have it balance out over the course of 100-1000 games.
  • Basic laws of probability Assuming you're not a troll and 1 per game, you have a 4/9 chance of getting the afk/troll on your team; 5/9 of the enemy getting it. So odds are better that you benefit from the trolls than you suffer.
  • Repeated proof of advancement Yes, I'm going to poke the pink elephant. It doesn't matter how many trolls are in your normal matches, if your good enough, you'll climb. Statistics, streamers, and Even Riot's experiments using pros have proven this. So whether you have a lot of matches or a few, is irrelevant. The system is proven to work.

Then there's 2 aspects that can be used in support of your claim.

  • Toxicity contamination People are more inclined to remember negative experiences than positive ones. Lyte even did a community experiment back on the old forums that demonstrated this. When people experience toxicity, they're also more likely to become toxic themselves. This means the chances of experiencing negative behavior (which includes AFKs/Trolls) increases exponentially the more you play during a given session. And people contaminated by toxicity are also more like to perceive toxicity. This causes otherwise isolated events (Amumu missed the smite steal) to appear as something much worse (Amumu intentionally feeding). Of course, the toxicity equation gets thrown for all sorts of loops when you throw in rebuffing positive players. But we're getting into an entirely different topic at that point.
  • elo Pitchforks down! Riot has acknowledged that the density of negative behavior goes down as elo goes up. (It never goes away.) So if we assume the density is enough for 1 per game, and 1000 games are played over 10 elo brackets, then we can reasonably assume that the density of negative behavior at the top elo bracket is half the bottom (exact value is irrelevant right now). Meaning that the top 100 games will see only 50 instances of negative behavior while the bottom 100 would absorb the remaining. The law of large numbers still works if you look at individual brackets or all brackets together, but falls apart if you factor the brackets against each other.
  • PROMOS It's already well established that promos aren't like normal matches. The system intentionally stacks the odds against you to see if you genuinely deserve to advance. This means [in theory] the enemy is better and/or your allies are worse. Now remember, the system determines better/worse through elo. Higher elo has a lower chance of negative behavior. Which means, even if it is by a fractionally small amount, your odds of encountering negative behavior during promos is [theoretically] higher.

I'm not posting this in support of either camp. They're both correct and incorrect depending on how you look at the information given. But having said that, we do encounter the giant monkey wrench in this entire debate. Most of our information comes from unreliable sources.

  • Personal Experience People are horrible at being unbiased - especially about them selves. Hitler thought himself a servant and hero; the uni-bomber thought scientists where out to get him. You think you're under siege by toxic players, I think there are ninjas waiting in my bathroom to abduct me. Horrible. Absolutely horrible.
  • Riot. But Riot holds all the raw data, they can't be unreliable! WRONG! Reliable sources can be identified, reviewed, and tested. For everything Riot tells us we can............ Only identify it...... Sometimes. Now, I'm not saying they're wrong. They have better access to that raw data than anyone; which makes them the most knowledgeable source for that information. But because they don't openly share that data or it's collection methods, we can't review or test it. Basically, The worlds best spiritualist is saying there is a ghost behind me. But they can't prove it to me because it would scare away the ghost. Also, they're saying my neighbor has weapons of mass destruction. (>_>)

Anyways. Just a bit of food for thought.

As you continuously expand the number of variables in a given system beyond 2, you are increasingly moving away from predictability, with horseshoes.

It might seem possible that a single factor like having a troll or afk in a game might even out over time, but it becomes increasingly difficult when you take into consideration that there are a vast amount of factors overlapping and influencing each other. For example, A high elo smurf can negate an afk or even a troll.

let me give you a little more inspiration on the factors that are influencing ranked:

  • 10 individual people, each having a variance of skill they can bring into the game (from as bad a game as they can have to as good as they can carry)

  • 10 people being at the right elo or not. This will happen naturally to a certain degree if the ranking system does not work, which i tell you is to some extent the case. You wont find average to bad players in master tier, but you will for sure find mediocre players in plat. This is when talking about the honest parts of ranked. Besides, there is smurfs, elo boosters, ebay accounts, account sharing, scripting and cheating, and probably a lot more shady stuff. Also, this game has been out for a long time, and smurfs distort the ranking system a lot.

  • Now, this is major: 10 people influencing the game with their attitude. Were used to talk about players that conduct their games like a car engine will get you so and so fast on the road. But this is not the case: Player attitude and mood has a HUGE influence on games (fun fact: in every elo). From a statistically unproven point, i feel inclined to say that individual player attitude of 10 people each game is enough to screw determining ones elo right in a game where one sample lasts 20 to 60 minutes. That alone is enough to make it not work imo.

  • Game balancing, countless factors and numbers that can be tuned to be rather fair, or not Vayne. Decide yourself if riot does a good job here.

  • Network properties. This isnt an offline game of chess between two humans, for which the elo system was designed for. 10 people have different internet properties, and there is also the server. Yes, ping can and will influence games. If you ever think you can become confident in csing with rumbles flamespitter, different pings will completely screw you. Rumble main here. Ping spikes can decide games. EUW has seen its fair share of that recently.

  • Minor stuff. Creepblock. Yes creepblock. After 2000 games i dont feel like i have security about what creeps do at all, and what they block. On top, it seems like creep behaviour has changed over time?

  • the list goes on and on im sure

It is often said that the ranked system is proved to work because smurfs can climb to a certain elo reliably and fast. Let me tell you an equivalent story: You send some 130 kg heavy hardcore bodybuilders to a gym and see if they can lift very light weights. Then you draw a noncausal outcome out of the little experiment, like light weights being useful to cause strength gain for weak people.

Tl, dr: Its a crapshoot.

I've been saying this for too long. It all comes down to luck. LUCK. If you play just as well as somebody else who's higher rank than you, it comes down to luck. Pure luck. They are getting less afker and feeders/intentional feeders than you are lol. Thats all it is.

People who are thriving off of chance are usually the ones who will defend the idea that it all balances out. Which is hilarious because it means EVEN THEY DO NOT BELONG IN THEIR RANK. They havent yet recieved the FULL "balance" of chance.

I RARELY see a plat level player win games with trolls/feeders and afkers. They lose just like anyone else.

I would agree with you except for one fact - it's not 50/50

It's 4/9 that you get a troll/afk assuming that your yourself are not a troll/afk.

So statistically it's in your favour.

I remember someone once did the math out on this topic, and it came to a worst-case scenario of 1 in 10,000 are statistically likely to be hindered by trolls across a large (more than a few hundred) of games. That, mind you, was the highest value the person could find, which used a troll rate of 17%.

Obviously, I have no evidence to prove this, nor do I have a link to the post on the old boards where it was all mathed out. Thus, you can either take my word for it or dismiss this.

"If you get heads 1000 times in a row" is also a dumb argument, so you don't really have a leg to stand on if you want to call another argument dumb. Statistically, YES, there is a guarantee that it will, more or less, even out, because you WILL NOT flip heads 1000 times in a row. It's not going to happen.

Worse still, assuming YOU aren't the afker or troll, the opposing team actually has a GREATER THAN EVEN chance of having a troll or afker on it. Specifically, there is a 55% chance of there being one on the opposing team and only 45% chance on your team. Unless, of course, YOU are the troll. It does NOT take tens of thousands of games for a 99% confidence interval.

But please, by all means, continue to wax idiotic about statistics when you don't even have a high school level understanding of the subject.

I don't think they ever give out compensation. I think it's just an illusory "option" they say is a thing but really they're just blowing hot air.

Have to agree. It's extremely lazy logic. The funny thing is, it does even out, but in the worst ways. It evens out in a way that prevents progress. especially since the reward or punishment after each game is inconsistent. my idea, and the math works out decently well for people who actually try at the game. would need some changing of course but the base idea is there.

For me the issue is not about winning or losing, it's about gameplay experience. If there's someone trolling or AFK on the enemy team I feel just as bad as if they were on my team. Sure it's a free win, but you win knowing you don't deserve it and there's nothing worse than that. If you win a 4v5 then say 'gg' I'm talking to you.

This is not a desirable gameplay experience for anyone except those who think these games are 'good game(s)'. My opinion on this is mirrored in my opinion on the GODAWFUL new player experience. You can't expect people to endure this rubbish then say 'oh well, people will either stick around or they won't' and 'it all evens out in the end'.

The real issues in my mind are these things:

a) people reducing the argument to winning and losing as opposed to gameplay experience;

b) Riot white knights, and;

c) the incredulity of Riot in their current state of hyper-complacency. This game has made it. It makes millions of dollars a month. As long as they keep pumping out skins and champs to buy they're set. They have enough people playing. Their priorities lie in profit and trying to convince us the game is an e-sport.

Fix your game Riot (you won't, but I'd like to think I'm wrong).

The OP is an idiot. Not surprised to see this thread upvoted by his intellectual compatriots.

Could you show me how his theory is wrong? Not saying you are wrong or anything, just wanted to see where OP went wrong :)

You can see RiotLyte listing both trolling and AFK's as within their top 4 priorities here (click the reddit image, dunno why Riot formatting it like that):

Honestly, I used to think the same way. I would spend lots of time worrying about having an afker or a troll and chatting in the games to my teammates. I spent time doing math and stats on things, but at the end of the day, I was a silver player spending more time complaining about "ELO hell" than I did working on my own game. And guess what, when I started to analyze my own mistakes and behavior and making changes to that, I started to climb. I'm diamond now and I can honestly say if I didn't make the change in my attitude I would still be low gold.

The raw facts are that you CAN and HAVE to carry yourself every game and every player that is not in silver or bronze has done this one way or another. and the only way to do that consistently is to have a positive attitude and to work on yourself. While I am sure everyone finds these daily complaints about the way RIOT does there matchmaking comical (they have literally been going on since 2009). It's time to wipe away your tears and make the changes to be a better player.

For you, for your teammates, for your rating, and for the entire community.

I did change my mindset. I'm still low/mid Gold. Even if I put the responsibility on myself, it doesn't change the objective fact that if my team mates keep banning shit bans or keep feeding snowball carries, I'm gonna get gated, and the only way for me to stop it is to main positions that I can personally fight those guys myself (Vayne, Irelia, Riven, Fiora, Trist, Ahri, Lux, Darius, Mord for some examples), and then be good enough to never lose to them. I can't do all that, I'm sorry. I'm trying to be the best I can be at what I'm good at, and competent enough at things I don't suck at, but I can't top, so I can't fight Riven for my team mates. Like, today, all my issues were never from my lane. Even when I was supporting a shit adc, I kept her alive through the most shit, and even managed to help her get a kill. Still lost 2 games today even though I was doing nothing but stomping bot lane all day over and over. Sure, I should eventually climb, and my win rate on Sona should be indication of eventual upward movement seeing how she's like...70 more wins than losses and I spam her in ranked...but I'm still low/mid Gold.
