Morde is the perfect example of Riot's flawed design philosophy

slippykitten··209 votes·7,521 views

At some point Riot decided to design to fit a meta instead of letting the meta develop naturally after good design.

The meta only existed after players picked up a fun game and found what worked best. It was fun finding that out, and exploring interesting champions who held the possibility of doing really cool things. The meta wasnt made by Riot, it was made by the community using Riots awesome creation.

However, now Riot designs according to whatever meta they want to promote - from champions to items.

Morde was left as unsatisfying and uninteresting but instead of making morde interesting and fun to play and letting the community find a place for him, Riot mildly altered some of his abilities and shoved him into the "adc" position. He plays pretty much the same, with nearly the same interactions. He is no more interesting than he was (except maybe the dragon ghost) and still just runs at you and if you stay there, you die. **Riot didnt redesign morde to be fun, interesting and cool, they designed him to fit somewhere into their meta and to be strong. ** So what do we have? We have an overtuned "ADC" morde that is still boring and uninteractive but who is going to get played because hes strong and works.

Supports get pigeon holed into support only because Riot feels the need to balance around the meta. So when they nerf "support" champs that go to solo lanes but arent top tier supports, they just simply dont get played very often (im looking at you karma). If the community wants karma mid, than ffs, let it be. Balance her if shes too strong, but don't tell us what gets to be meta.

This doesn't make a fun game.

At this point Riot releases a champ, tells me where he needs to go, what he needs to buy, and what his role needs to be. If i find success doing anything else, it will get nerfed. So why am i even playing if its already decided what i have to do before hand? Do you guys want to come to my house and push the buttons for me as well?

tl;dr Riot - get back your soul and start designing champions, items, and the game based on what is fun, interesting, and exciting and let the community figure out the meta, because actually, that's half the fun.

Do you guys want to come to my house and push the buttons for me as well?

If that's the case, can a high elo rioter come over to my place and level me to diamond 5 in a weekend?

They would do it, and then ban you for Elo boosting

3TWarrior2 votes

maybe riot would actually see the flaws in their own system if they did...at this point, I don't think riot even plays their own game

Good luck getting thru plat worst elo hell

It's flawed, but it doesn't really apply to this scenario since CertainlyT has literally NEVER followed Riot's design philosophy.

This. I'm not sure why he continues to design champions like this.

Because CT follows CT.

Hate all you want, but if we had CT design every champ this game would be a blast.

You know, if everyone is broken and OP, nobody is broken and OP.

Remember URF and how some were more OP than others?

GruntsGoneWild

Except everyone was OP in some way except basically shen...

That's exactly my point. Everyone is OP, but some are much more OP.

Retillin2 votes

Wait... are you telling me Hec and Sona were more OP than just about everyone else in URF? If that were the case Riot would have disabled them during such a game mode.... oh wait, they did.

CertainlyT tries to make his own meta of overloaded or always strong champions that are mega pain to play against.

This. CertainlyT champs read like the old "Champion wishlist" posts that used to pop up on the old boards where people would post what their ideal champ would be by combining a bunch of different abilities. Ya know, the ones that everybody knew would never happen but were fine to day dream about.

Ya got sources?

Seems like you're just talking out of your ass and lose to CertainlyT champs bro

I mean you can look in the forum archives, I remember these threads.

CertainlyT's champions are normally fun as hell but they are way too broken. That, or they never fall out of meta (looking at you, Thresh.) If it isn't one of those, a free stat is added in.

champions forced into a role by theyr kits: Soraka Kalista Mordekaiser the others just have kits that are good at a certain role, these 3 have one or more abilities that say "duo or fuck you" I don't like it :(

Ap Raka can make a passable midlane tho...

Are you sure you haven't ever seen raka mid or top? Cause I see it a lot

Anidan3 votes

The thing with that is that if she lanes solo, she has no W, similar to Kalista (no Sentinel passive poke, no ult) and Mordekaiser (no W).

They are pretty much told that if they want to use the champion to their optimal levels, they MUST duo lane, or be short an ability that the enemy laner will not be.

Laraso5 votes

Except she does. Her W passive is what gives her health back every time she lands a Q.

Jungle Lux God2 votes

Kalista can make do as a cancerous anti-melee top laner, while Soraka isn't necessarily bad in a solo lane, although she probably isn't too good either.

Mordekaiser distinctly cannot go into a solo lane by virtue of not having an ability in it. By comparison, Soraka's W is still useful for its passive component, and Kalista can bind to a jungler so she's not completely out of an R, and she doesn't really need Sentinel's passive anyways.

Ipols2 votes

morde can cast W on the jungler, too. The fact is that these champions are weaker if you don't follow Riot's chosen meta, while I think the players are the one that should create a meta

JedenVojak18 votes

You're correct on the philosophy bit, but wrong on the "Morde was not fun" bit. Mordekaiser was fun as hell when he could, you know, solo lane.

Laraso5 votes

This 3000% over. Morde was always a blast to play.

3TWarrior3 votes

yeah, he was always fun, but when I look at it, it wasn't fun for the opponent.

think about it...unless your opponent got a gank or had some major poke damage, you would win lane almost 100% Garen teed...even the almight riven needed mordekaiser to way over extend and have burnt his only escapes(summoners) to kill him

Laraso2 votes

unless your opponent got a gank

That's a given. If you're playing Morde, you're basically signing up to get camped.

TahmKench- Designed for top lane. Has seen play as a support. Gangplank- Classic top laner, pros taking him mid in some regions. Fiora- She wasn't designed with any lane in mind, she was designed as a fencer. (Outside of jungle)

Should also be noted that champions like Bard TahmKench Kalista Gnar have been breaking "rules" they set forth for ages. But nobody really cares about those rules because they changed the layout of the game. Not affecting/removing control from allies, always having 100% control of your champion, etc. Sure, Gnar and Kalista need some changes but these champions are adding things to the game and actively making niches that have no been filled.

Also, IDK about you, but even with these new items I see a lot of the same shit built every game. Randuins, Infinity edge, Ravenous Hydra, etc.

And you think that old Morde was only top? I've seen some of them on mid/adc or even jungle...

Chromatic Eagle3 votes

I thought he was designed for mid? Not surprised he can jungle. This makes what CT did even worse.

Saianna4 votes

Maybe at the beginning.. But after x'th meta (and maybe some nerfs to morde) players noticed he's better as top pick..

Well.. At least it was our decision. Now? ADC or stfu...

Decrit1 votes

Top and Mid were his only true places, jungle sucked really hard xD

I tried him support many times however, and he was kinda good at it!

Saianna2 votes

jungle sucked really hard xD

I myself have never tried Morde jungle, but I'm more than sure that few players were really good at it. And now, something they've enjoyed has been taken away from them.

I tried him support many times however, and he was kinda good at it!

That's kind of weird imo. Morde is one of those starving champions who just needs loads of gold to be effective. And as a support, your gold you can generate is about 1/4th of top laners.. And on top of that Morde has no support-like abilities except his shield on ally. No CC etc..

Personally I'd say Support Morde is some kind of trolling... But if you had success with it.. Well.. good for you :)

Sozan55 votes

Tahm Kench was designed to be a support that can also go top.

GP is still generally a top laner. Besides, the same could be said of many other champs (Jayce comes to mind immidiately).

If you wanted a good example you should've mentioned Vi, which was designed as a top laner (I haven't seen top Vi since her release, pretty much).

Chromatic Eagle3 votes

Vi? Really? I think Ekko is supposed to be top, but all I see are junglers.

RasCaelestis4 votes

Ekko was designed for mid, but now I only see him jungle too.

Big Lincoln7 votes

i think mord was strong, interesting and cool tbh

i don't see how he wasn't, he fit with his theme and he had a more flexible build path than usually advertised

WutsKraken6 votes

Morde right before his rework was awesome. Now Morde might be strong, but he's just stuck bot lane

Before, he could go in both solo lanes OR go bot as an "ADC" and still work

Jingerbeardman6 votes

ummm i am so confused by your post... You say that it is the community that established the meta by playing a good game and figuring out what works. Then you try and say that Riot developing new content that adds more variability to the game with different ways to play is bad. Yet that is what you want because it is what keeps the game fun and interesting.

So basically you are criticizing Riot for doing exactly what you want them to... They created new content and released it to the community to enjoy and further develop the meta the way the community sees fit but with more options and ways to do that.

When did they enforce a meta? To be entirely honest that is exactly what they WERE doing up until this attempt with Mordekaiser. All they have done is give us more tools to play the game the way we want to. Pretty sure you can play any way you want and no one is going to stop you.

I think you have your salt pointed in the wrong direction. It is not Riot you are upset with but the community for being stuck in the same mindset and not wanting to experiment with new things when they are made available. It is still up to us to create the meta, they just gave us some new tools to play with and enjoy... Which is what you want.

It seems like you simply do not like that morde can be played in different ways now. You can still take him into a solo lane, no one is stopping you from doing that. so is there a better way you can explain what your problem is exactly without massively contradicting yourself?

Big Lincoln12 votes

lmao

mord can't be played in different ways

you people need to stop showing your short-sightedness when it comes to this stuff. "ooh, but mord can go bot now!!" wow, after riot explicitly tells you to take him bot and utterly ruins him for any other lane? damn, old mord could NEVER have gone bot without a rework barring him from his kit without a duo lane!!

way to think outside the box dude :^) really changing up the meta :)

ShakySurgeon5 votes

I agree man. This Mord bot shit has really ruined a lot of my games. It's horrendously broken at the moment.

3TWarrior2 votes

in the effect that it either wins the lane completely or gets shut down, at this point, it seems up to the player picking the support whether mordekaiser gets any kills

SEKAI5 votes

Morde is the perfect example of Riot's flawed design philosophy

More like CertainlyT's.

To Riot's credit, they are actually pretty sensible about their champ design most of the time, and their fault is the tendency to botch balance decisions. Riot's vision of champ kits, to most people's surprise, is in reality quite fair more often than not.

Unlike CertainlyT, this guy just messes things up, crosses lines and ignores community (or anyone's) feedbacks. CT needs to get off his nonexistent high horse called Rito and touch the frigging ground at least once from time to time.

Jungle Lux God4 votes

Mordekaiser is one example with numerous counterexamples.

Tahm Kench was not designed to be a support or a top laner. He was designed so that he could go either.

Ekko was designed to be a solo laner, and can go top or mid, and has seen play in the jungle as well.

Runeglaive was a distinct attempt at bringing the AP jungling champion pool beyond a half dozen heroes, and even though it didn't the AP jungling champion pool it still made a lot of champions more playable due to not having mana concerns (note: playable does not mean that a champion is viable. Viable means you can be played and be competitive. Playable means you can be played, but may not be competitive).

Even Kalista, who was distinctly designed to benefit from a duo lane, can solo lane as well.

Obviously, there is something wrong with Mordekaiser being only able to duo lane, but generalizing every champion as only being able to go to one lane because of him is not appropriate.

MySmallNuts3 votes

The patch they nerfed the stupid new runeglaive was the best patch this year. We had finaly a clean and balanced SR

Now, few weeks before world they toss new meta new rework 10 new items, change on 12 items, now you have a Garen Skarner and Darius Broken + a stupid mordekaiser...

MarkedOfKane3 votes

I have been wanting to make a thread like this for a while. The meta shouldn't be enforced. The champions should be made as whatever and the players decide where they go.
