@Riot. Autofill doesn't make things faster

DonnieDarkin··49 votes·2,796 views

Its not worth it. Its not worth finding a quicker match just to have someone dodge. You waste just as much time. You should poll your players. Most of us would rather wait then have to auto fill, or deal with someone bitching about being support.

But hey, we are just the customers. What do we know.

Their own stats show that, before Autofill, only Challenger had 20+ minute queue times. Every other ELO had 5 minutes on average.

There was absolutely no need to give every other ELO, from Bronze to Diamond, the Autofill system. A better quality match trumps 1-2 minutes extra queue time.

honestly, at least for me, it does cut down queue times, but i have noticed them getting worse again, im only in gold on na, last season i would wait 8=17 minutes to play a game (i have waited 39 minutes at most) but fuck, at least i got a role i wanted, i didnt get "punished" with a long wait followed by, "here you take support or top because WE tell you to"

Karfuss4 votes

And that's the problem, and it's a cardinal sin in game development. Riot are essentially telling you that you prefer slightly shorter queue times, to having a better quality games. And even then, factoring role choice (which would've added on queue time innately), autofill is only shaving off seconds at best.

Personally, my biggest gripe is getting autofilled in Ranked. It shouldn't exist as I am not a Challenger player, and my losses (when applicable) should not be attributed to a system that, according to Riot's own statistics, doesn't NEED to exist. And even then, I wouldn't care so much, if Support wasn't my secondary preference. If I was left longer in the queue system for not even 10 seconds, I would've been filling a role that most people don't want to play.

Leaf on Bush4 votes

And that's the problem

Nope the problem is a shortage of players for certain roles across all divisions, plain and simple. No system will solve that, only the players can. But players have always been forced to fill in one way or another, so why even discuss this.

Karunamon4 votes

So.. did you miss the stats that show no such shortage of players actually exists?

DarkRitual1 votes

If there's no shortage of players, why do I get my main role more than 99% of the time? I should be having to fight for it with others in queue, but that is not happening.

Baron of Bread1 votes

I certainly did. Where are they? I would like to see them.

Queue times were never a real problem. Autofill is a solution in search of a problem.

Baron of Bread3 votes

That does not show that no shortage of players exists, just that the queue times have been altered (assuming you are talking about the queue time graphs). Saying there is no shortage is ignoring all of the other data.

The problem that autofill is the solution to is getting people to be able to play their primary role more than their secondary (in most cases, Mid/Supp still isn't going to see Mid more than 50% of the time). Look at the "Chance to get Primary Position" graphs. That alone should tell you that autofill is solving a problem and that there is indeed a shortage of players in some roles.

While we are at it we can look at the "Percent of Players Autofilling" graph as well.

Aptest1 votes

you got this wrong. riot are not telling you that you prefer shorter queue times. they are telling you that they prefer shorter queue times, and that you have to accommodate them.

that you prefer shorter queue times over gurenteed role is a known given, whether you say otherwise or not.

GayFluffyUnicorn3 votes

Then we can just go back to the old system and scrap role selection. Poor OTPs will finally drop back to silver. Everyone has to play different roles most of the games, no more "i can't jungle/adc/mid/supp". Game quality will rise over time again and even better, if this system forces me to be the highest mmr most of the time and force me to carry these trashcans i atleast have the bans and can choose my role as firstpick. I'm fine with that.

What time of day do you play? I was gold last season, and never waited that long for a game. At most it was 5-6 mins.

Axeified1 votes

last season i played at all times of the day, obviously like 2-3 am is when i would have 20+ queue times, but even if it was around 6-8 pm i would still have 15+ queue times (times are in eastern if you were wondering)

You do realize that players always had to fill even when it wasn't called "autofill"?

No they didn't last season, where the stats are from. Last season you just picked 2 roles and that was it.

Your reply was a non sequitur.

Try again or stay in school.

Quepha4 votes

That was also when ranked was a single dynamic queue so the player base wasn't sharded as much and 3-stacks and 4-stacks where doing a lot of work to help cover the in-demand roles.

It's basically 'pick your poison' for autofill at all elos vs. all group sizes in the same queue, and there are definitely far fewer complaints about the current season's system than last season saw for dynamic queue.

Junkο1 votes

The sad part is that comparing those stats to my queue times, the queue times are the same.

Actually I don't ever remember people complaining about queue times.

Not untill role selection came along, and spoiled newer players.

When new champ select first came out it was a problem. It took about a month or two to get that worked out but it did eventually.

DonnieDarkin2 votes

I never complained about queue times. 5-10 minutes was fine for a good match.

Vectros4 votes

I have an idea, but I don't know how viable it is.

What if, when you're getting ready to queue up, you can set your...time limits for each role? Using myself as an example...

I have a strong preference to play Jungle or Top. So I don't want the queue to wait for either of these roles, and set their timers to 0. I'm ok with doing mid, but only after a 10 minute wait-so I set it to 10 minutes. Next up I'd prefer support but don't feel like playing it often. I set it to 25 minutes. I never want to ADC, so I set the timer to infinite.

As my queue reaches each of the set times, it'll start seeing if it can fill me into those roles. At 10 minutes, I might end up in mid if it can find a game for me. Otherwise it'll keep looking until 25 minutes.

I'm sure someone is bound to come along and say "but then everyone will set support as infinite and we'll never get to play!" Guess what happens? Eventually some people start to cave. They set their limit to whatever it may be-30 minutes, then they're ok with playing support. After a 30 minute wait, they end up as support, because they don't want to wait any longer.

I don't now how feasible it is. Maybe it's a dumb idea, but every player being able to customize how long it should wait before placing them in any given role would be...awesome, I think.

Aedificator14104 votes
  1. Riot's stats actually show that it did decrease slightly the waiting time

  2. Surely at very low elo (bronze/silver/maybe gold) it doesn't make a huge difference due to the amount of players in there, but starting Plat you get some more minutes waiting without autofill.

  3. You are already autofill-prevented when in promos, so that doesn't impact your most important matches

  4. If you think you are better than your elo and deserve to climb, it means you mastered the game's mechanics in all roles at your elo. Not just the on champion you play in the jungle. I mean you need to know how to play the other lanes too. Including playing support.

  5. People "bitching about being support", as you said, aren't Riot's fault. It's these people's fault for being immature. Don't put that one on Riot >_>

  6. Also you seem to forget that Ranked used to be full pick order. Maybe you weren't playing yet, but trust me it was far worse than "sometimes getting autofilled top or supp"

Khadaver2 votes

Waiting time may have been decreased but it doesn't account for the dodges you face i bet. When you do get into a game with an autofilled teammate, the game quality is worse. Years ago it might have worked but current players only want their 2 lanes.

Aedificator14102 votes

You don't seem to understand my point. Nowadays the worst-case scenario is having to autofill, then play 2 games while being autofill-protected, then 1 autofill, then 2 protected, etc. That means you get your role at least 66% of the time. People used to beg to play their role, and if you were last pick it was very likely that support was all that was remaining.

So yes, waiting a bit more is worth it. And what if someone dodges ? That's one person to replace. Let's be honnest here : when someone dodges the game generally finds you a match within the next minute.

DarkRitual1 votes

That's an issue of people being babies at having to play support (usually this is the cause of dodges, but not always). Players got spoiled by role selection, as you mentioned. These sorts of players should not be catered to. Either suck it up and play when autofilled, or play support once to get the autofill protection.

SofaKingHi4202 votes

You are already autofill-prevented when in promos, so that doesn't impact your most important matches

Unless someone gets autofilled JG or ADC while you are in your promos. I may get my position, but a heap of soggy tissues is not that easy to carry.

If you think you are better than your elo and deserve to climb, it means you mastered the game's mechanics in all roles at your elo. Not just the on champion you play in the jungle. I mean you need to know how to play the other lanes too. Including playing support.

It's a five person game. I can generally hold my own. Sometimes I can carry. I'm generally not worried about auto-filling. I main mid and top - but I know the other roles.

However, not everyone in every game has had more that a year in league. I'm bronze 3. I'm right in the middle of the lowest rank. People in bronze are in bronze because either they are still learning, or have no interest in learning. There are thousands of combinations of matchups and items and team comps and skill combos. Bronze is where people work those out in a competitive setting. I would like to climb. I finished bronze 1 last season. I started bronze 5 this season. But sometimes a game can be ruined because someone on the team does not know their role, or cannot adapt their role as the game progresses and power shifts.

In bronze ELO JG is auto-filled quite commonly. The team with the experienced jungler has a better chance of winning every time, regardless of team comp. When this happens in promos.. its aggravating. When this prohibits me from getting to promos.. it makes me think longer queue times are not the worst thing in the world.

DonnieDarkin1 votes

"People "bitching about being support", as you said, aren't Riot's fault. It's these people's fault for being immature. Don't put that one on Riot >_>"

WRONG. You are basically blaming players for not liking a role that they are forced to play. That IS on Riot. Its not players fault for not liking the role! WTF?

TTK Dreadnought3 votes

I hate having someone get Top or Mid and i get autofilled in another role and watching them feed in a matchup i would of won.

Longer Queues > Autofill/bad experience

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

This is just so fuckin true. I mean this fuckin system holds you back anyways and puts you into dogshit elos because you need "to carry". It's already proven to me. After 18 games winstreak observing the teams i got placed into the more i won the worse the teammates and slightly worse the enemy got until it went up again. So i'm supposed to carry but get autofilled into jungle or adc. Great. Two roles i as GP/Swain main total know what to do after not playing said roles for idk, 50 games.

Edit: Atleast in the old system i could ban, i chose my role when i was the highest mmr and apart from gold5 and lower i never had any big discussions or trolls. This season i have way more afks and troll than all previous seasons together. Besides players still holding the lobby hostage trying to force me out of my given role. So what exactly did get better with this system? Matchquality is shit, every game is a onesided stomp especially in the higher elos. It's all about who gets more autofills. Q times are not different for me, even lower than last season that i have to say but i gladly take 2-3+mins of q times when in exchange my jungler isn't 0/2 in 3 mins because he has no idea what he is doing or my botlane 2/12 combined in just 10 mins.

Leaf on Bush3 votes

Its not worth it. Its not worth finding a quicker match just to have someone dodge.

Thats not a problem of autofill, it's mostly the players ignorant attitude. So if you want to improve the situation, stop defending those dodgers and trolls and stop blaming the autofill system. They are not victims, they are the root of the problem. They refuse to accept that they can get autofilled and they insist on playing their one role, expecting everyone else to fill for them. This is selfish and unsportmanlike and it shouldn't be tolerated. I wish more players would speak out against this behaviour instead of bashing Riot.

DonnieDarkin1 votes

Wrong wrong wrong. You are suggesting that players should just...what...magically suddenly LIKE playing support when they really dont like it? Everyone should just suck it up and play a role they don't find fun, despite the fact that the whole point of playing a game is for fun?

It is absolutely Riots fault. You are blaming people for not liking someone, as if people are not all different with different personalities and taste. But apparently everyone should just change their mind and start liking support? MILLIONS of players? Right. Good luck with that. That WILL NEVER HAPPEN. The only realistic solution is for Riot to address it on their end.

Maximum Morde3 votes

Technically it does. Then players make it take longer again :)

Lintu Puck1 votes

This situation is not entirely Riot's fault. It isn't really Riot's fault when you get queued with people that absolutely despise a role so much they'ed rather take the leaver buster than have to even touch the role. It isn't Riot's fault that there are players who are one-trick-ponies with champs/roles and can't do anything else for squat. Those are all part of the problem and all of them are problems from the player end i.e. "the customer".

MrPlantarbre1 votes

I don't know, I really feel like the time I spend in queue has done down since that change. I used to wait between 3 and 15 minutes for a game, now I usually find it after 2-4 minutes.

I don't mind getting auto-filled, that's part of the deal and I play my part if that's better for everyone.

YOUGOTKILLEDBRO1 votes

I ESPECIALLY find this annoying in normals, where I just want to try something out.

idontgiveabother1 votes

It would be so nice to wait 4 minutes in a q and get into a game on the first try rather than wait 2-3 minutes and wait another 5-10 for people to stop dodging. Oh well :/

DarkRitual1 votes

You would rather wait? How long? 5 minutes? How about 10? 30 minutes? An hour?

What is your time limit? It's also worth remembering that not everyone is willing or able to wait the way you are. The only way I forsee autofill being removed quickly without reasonably affecting queue times is by also removing role selection completely.

DonnieDarkin2 votes

Based on feedback I see on the boards, I am working off the assumption that most people would be okay waiting a little longer for a better match....maybe 5-7 minutes. I think I am in the majority in this thinking.

VvVVvV1 votes

yeah exactly. Personally I would rather wait than deal with stuff like people dodging or someone complaining about being autofilled. i dont mind being autofilled because Im willing to play any role i get or play support when someone else doesnt want to. But you have a lot of people out there that are just stuck on playing 1 role or even worse just one champ which makes it hard to sort out situations when someone is autofilled.

Nothing worse than getting a 1 trick Vayne main who got autofilled support and claims to now even own a support champ. And the person who got adc role not willing to switch. You either get a dodge, a bot lane fighting each other all game or a support who doesnt know how to support and is supporting with their vayne.

id just rather wait.

I could see autofill used in high elo especially since most of them are willing to cooperate in champ select. But in most bronze and silver games it is not needed.....it hurts more than it helps.

DarkRitual1 votes

5-7 minutes is definately fair. So, what happens if queue times trend higher? Would you wait more every game, or would you accept autofill after a longer duration (as was the case at a point last season)?

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

Bring back teambuilder!

ThugWalrus1 votes

I think you'd be surprised about what players want. It was just over a season ago now that every other post on the boards was "OMG Riot I am plat 4 and had to wait 9 MINUTES for a game. Smh, riot so useless." And I'm not exaggerating when I say it was probably more common than complaints about autofill are now.

It's easy to have a warped perception of what the community wants (especially if you frequent the boards a lot), because there is undoubtedly a circle-jerk that goes on here where people become more and more hive-minded.

Long story short, it doesn't matter which system Riot goes with, it's going to get a ton of flak.
