Why won't Darius's ult refresh on clones if he kills them anymore?

If it can't refresh because they are technically monsters he shouldn't be able to cast it on them in the first place.

You can consume/smite Shaco's clone and Leblancs clone, why can't we do the same for Darius's ult in where he can't use it on clones?
