Either he didn't die or he'll somehow come back. They just reworked the poor bastard. They wouldn't kill him off and keep him dead.

They couldn't kill off a champion; if they did, how would they explain his continued presence in the Institute of War? Now that that organization doesn't exist, then they can freely kill off any character as the story needs, without having to worry about gameplay backlash

I very strongly doubt that they would do this, especially given that they disabled him. He'll probably make some return then be re-enabled.
Though, to be honest, given they tossed out the institute, I don't really take the lore seriously anymore. It took the League out of League lore for me. That'll get downvotes but that's my opinion.
