Ironically, an IE build is better with ad runes than crit damage runes

Disclaimer - I am an ap mid main, I have no bias on this topic.

Written from my toilet.

I just ran the numbers in Excel. Scaling AD runes (all types, but especially glyphs and seals) are better than crit damage runes. This is even more-so the case if you buy infinity edge (which you certainly will if you're focused on crit...) The following assumption is made:

-Scaling AD runes scale approximately equally with crit damage runes during a game (you start with 0 crit, build up as you go).

The logic is this - the +50% damage multiplier increases the damage from the ad you gained from runes, but it does nothing to the damage you would gain from additional crit damage (they stack additively). Unfortunately, it seems that in no scenario are crit damage runes superior to scaling ad runes; at nominal 200% crit damage amp (not including runes), you will do about the same damage from a crit whether you have crit runes or ad runes. At 250% damage amp (with IE purchased), you will do MORE damage with ad runes than with crit damage runes. Therefore, crit damage runes are obsolete. I was looking into making a full crit cheese rune page for ARAM. I figured that since crit is risky, there would be some potential reward from crit damage runes, but apparently not.

I know that crit is hot topic with rng and all that. This thread is neutral on that.

EDITS:

Ashe -

After evaluating Ashe's numbers, the following is concluded:

Ashe deals more damage with scaling ad runes than crit damage runes for all rune types, at all crit %, with or without IE, at all AD levels, with the following exceptions:

The damage equalizes at higher AD levels (approx. 300 AD), and then is VERY SLIGHTLY higher for crit runes after that. It's very minuscule, and not necessarily worth it. Overall, the two rune types seem to be more evenly matched for Ashe.

Did you account for Cait / Ashe passives, etc. that scale off of crit damage? They have a different ratio than standard autoattacks do for crit.

false

you could take gp as an example unless i'm just being stupid

ex: barrel crit for 1500 add ~20 ad or whatever 1550 damage now

crit dmg runes take 20% crit dmg

1800 dmg total

is this not how it works???

Crit runes are only better on gangplank in terms of damage output. howeever you will fuck up your early game. they can be good in trynd as well. I don't think its a big deal. few months back I played 10 games with crit damage runes. I think i won every single one. two on trynd. one on crit jax. one on yi. and a bunch on gangplank

Pretty sure crit dmg is better on champs like yas or jhin

I updated my findings on this matter for Ashe. It was a good bit of work. I'll look into GP next, since his case seems very interesting. I just need a break first.

Weird. Ive 1 shot people with a tryndamere full crit damage page. Yet ive never 1 shot people with a standard ad page.

I mean it still 2 shots...and is easier to farm with...and helps kill towers.

But nothings funnier than hitting some dumb ap mid who has 0 armor for 1900 damage.

Tryndamere is a special case since my assumption (that crit damage and scaling ad runes scale equally during a game) isn't as applicable. Without going into too much detail, Trynd gets access to crit very early on, and is therefore able to immediately take advantage of the crit damage runes, whereas the ad runes would take time to scale. However, the ad runes would take over later on in the game, especially if IE is built.

Remember - anecdotes are interesting, but they're not very useful for proving a point.

Side note: Does anyone know if GP's barrel damage crits, or if only the parrley/auto portion of the explosion crits? I need to know so I can crunch the numbers.

Lol. Nice information. I doubt that Riot has even considered something like this, especially considering that it seems like no one is looking into runes atm.

Maybe someday, they will re-evaluate the existence of crit damage in this game, and then the problem will solve itself.

That's not ironic, It's logical.

what about yasuo?

Although your title is misleading I will say you are correct when talking about scaling AD runes at level x. People should know you use crit runes on certain champions like Tryndamere for early game domination.

You said you were doing this on a spreadsheet, mind a link to either a screenshot or a copy on google drive or one drive?
