What If Blitzcrank Used Heat?

Meep Man··36 votes·3,822 views

I mean, he is a STEAM Golem, constantly blowing steam out from his back. What if he used Heat with Mana as a simple restriction so he can't super spam Rocket Grab. I understand a Passive Rework would be in order but still, it would be better thematically and possibly gameplay wise as well. Ive drawn up an example kit, but not what it has to be:

Base Mana Stat decreased to 200 from 267

PASSIVE- Steam Golem Innate- Steam: Blitzcrank uses Heat and Mana as his resources. Blitzcrank generates Heat from using abilities. After not inflicting any damage or using any spells for 4 seconds, Blitzcrank begins to lose 10 Heat per second. This is increased to 20 per second after 7 seconds. At 50 Heat, Blitzcrank's spells become empowered and is in the Danger Zone. At 100 Heat, Blitzcrank Overheats, silencing himself and draining all of his Heat over 6 seconds. He also activates a 100 (+20 per level) (+55% current mana) shield for 10 seconds. Blitzcrank must have available mana to use Rocket Grab.

Ability 1- Rocket Grab Active: Blitzcrank sends his hand out in the target direction, dealing 60/95/130/165/200 (+60% AP) magic damage and pulling the target to him and stunning them for 1 second. ** Danger Zone Bonus:** The damage of Rocket Grab is increased by 50% and the distance it can travel is increased by 100%. Cost: 40 Heat AND 40% Max Mana Cool Down: 14/13/12/11/10 sec. Range: 575 Projectile Speed: 1800 (same as live)

Ability 2- Overdrive Toggle Off: Blitzcrank gains an extra 6/12/18/24/30 bonus armor and magic resist. Toggle On: Blitzcrank sacrifices defenses for agility, gaining 10/13/16/19/22% movement speed and 30/35/40/45/50% attack speed. After 2.5 seconds, this spell begins to generate Heat and will stop the drain of Heat. Danger Zone Bonus: Blitzcrank gains an extra 50% more movement speed and attack speed. While toggled off, Blitzcrank gains 50% more armor and magic resist. Cost: 10 Heat per Second

Ability 3- Power Fist Active: Blitzcrank performs an uppercut in front of him, dealing 10/40/70/100/130 (+135% AD) physical damage to all units in front of him and knocking them into the air for 0.625 seconds. This attack applies on-hit effects to the closest enemy to Blitzcrank that it hits. A target must be within range to use this ability. Danger Zone Bonus: The damage and knock-up duration of Power Fist is increased by 50%. (~0.95 second knock-up) Cost: 25 Heat Cool Down: 7 sec. Range: 275

Ultimate- Heat Explosion Passive: Blitzcrank deals 20/30/40 (+15% AP) magic damage per second to enemies around him. This damage is doubled while Blitzcrank is Overheating. Active: Blitzcrank expels all Heat from himself to deal 50/75/100 (+40% AP) magic damage plus 250/300/350% (+20% per 100 AP) of his current Heat as magic damage to all enemy units around him and silence them for 0.5 seconds. This spell automatically activates when Blitzcrank Overheats, ignoring if the ability is on cool down or not. Using the spell in this way will also not put it on cool down. Cost: 100% current Heat Cool Down: 30 sec. Range: 600

Opinions?

EDIT: I added Mana back to Blitzcrank but solely as a limit to using Rocket Grab. I removed and pushed back some limitations I put on Rocket Grab due to this. For example, I removed the Power Fist disable and increased the range outside of Danger Zone to 575 from 500, increasing Danger Zone range to 1150 from 1000. I also updated the Rocket Grab tooltip to include the stun that is on the player shortly after being Rocket Grabbed. The stun isn't part of the update and is currently active on the Live server.

Blitzcrank is almost defined by his grab. His grab costs half his mana at level 1 to discourage using it off cooldown.

And this change would make his grab always up and with no reason to not spam it.

I didn't work too long on this kit, nor do I expect it to be any type of end product. There is definitely more complex interactions with the Grab that could occur here.

Having both mana AND heat is excessive, regardless of what you try to balance it (even if they figured out a good way to display it).

I also don't really understand how heat was supposed to reduce Blitz using Rocket Grab on cooldown anyways, it's a resource that regenerates faster than mana and can be used even if you don't have enough, and even if you go over the overheat is shorter than Rocket Grab's cooldown by a wide margin. Heck, it's more like a resource that allows him to use Rocket Grab more liberally during the laning phase since he doesn't immediately go OoM. It may make some sense thematically, but I don't see any way it reduces Rocket Grab.

I also disagree that it is necessary to nerf Rocket Grab, but that's another discussion.

Combine the two. Mana on the left, heat on the right. As mana goes up, heat goes down. As heat goes up, mana goes down. If you dont have enough mana, then you overheat when you cast the ability.

With the "steam" idea, this makes a lot of sense. Honestly, id just decrease the damage of an ability if you dont have enough mana for it. You could also make it so overheats stack, say, up to 5 times if you overheat again within 10 seconds. Each stack would increase the duration of overheat by 2~3 seconds.

^^ You should shy away from copying systems verbatim.. Especially one as iconic as rumbles overheat. And you can also push blitz random mana lightning (which doesnt make sense and doesnt make an impact) out in place of his barrier (which is useful)

the problem you run into with essentially making blitzcrank manaless is that his grab is a supreme class game changer. his other abilities are fine, but its his grab that makes him actually dangerous.

I disagree with that part. I think that his entire kit makes him dangerous with the lockdown as other people have noted. However, I would instead say that his grab brings his kit together. For instance, without his W, he would still be the same, just not as good as positioning maybe. Without his E he loses 1 sec of lockdown and a little bit of damage. Without his ult he loses a bit of lockdown and a silence, but well, that's his ult.

Tl;dr, his entire kit is dangerous, but lacks range. His grab brings the entire kit together and removes that weakness. (Sorry for being a bit picky with words)

My main concern here is that heat works on Rumble because his stuff is spammable all the time. Blitz Q has to have a long cooldown and Blitz E needs something to punch.

Yeah thats what I thought. I thought putting his W to Toggle might change that, possibly even making him a viable Jungle or Top with Support, but it might not. It would definitely be something worth testing to see if it can work however due to the extreme thematic potential.

Also I saw someone mention Blitzcrank say "The magic calls to me." Well, technically, hexmaturgy which is what Blitzcrank is made of uses a combination of magic and technology to function. Therefore, the quote still makes sense. Also, Blitzcrank could use a new VO. Mainly for more Quotes though since his current VO sound is awesome. Selecting him in Champ Select gets you pumped.

To discourage blitz spaming his grab you have to add a condition. His mana pool is the condition right now, with this changes is Spam your Q fest.

Someting like he can only Q if heat>50 since your new W can generate heat for him.

SecretAgentHulk1 votes

If you can only use pull when heat>50, you mess up Blitz's QEW combo (50+35Q+25E = 110 = passive proc = silence, wait to start using W again). Additionally it means that Q is useless at level 1 since you have no way to charge heat.

Honestly, I'd be OK with dealing no damage on it (maybe damage when heat>50?) in exchange for being able to use it more often. In exchange, the cooldown should still get reduced for each point, and the amount of heat it generates could ramp down maybe 55/50/45/40/35. Heat should start dissipating only after 10 seconds (10/9/8/7/6?), and only then at a rate of 5 per second. (EDIT: I think I just made it so he always has heat>50, which is bad because it grants bonus damage. My original criticisms still stand though.)

This would make the gating cost the automatic shield proc and self-silence from overheating, and loss of these things due to cooldown. At rank 1, two pulls as fast as can be executed will immediately proc shield and self-silence. You'd have to wait another 5 seconds to be able to Golem Punch before shielding and self-silencing. Probably Overcharge's heatless "grace period" should ramp up (0.5/1/1.5/2/2.5), the silence should be for at least two seconds, and the shield cooldown about as long as it is now, so that greedy Blitzes are punished for not managing heat better.

Maybe the ult active should trigger the shield (and reduce its cooldown?), as it is not as reliable a defense mechanism as Mana Barrier, while still having a similar cooldown as a resource gate. These changes also make Q a strategic investment as opposed to the one-point wonder it is on current Blitzcrank.

RogueWill1 votes

I was just throwing out ideas, because being able to spam your Q as long as it cames out of the CD without no trade off whatsoever it will reallly ramp up Blitscrank to the point it will become old nidalee, keep spaming yoru Q until it eventually hits and then you get a kill.

rumble's heat resource is based on his mech being old tech , malfunctioning, broken whatever, when it overheats it shuts down all of its programs bar movement and attacking.

blitzcrank is a steam golem. steam is generated and then it is used by releasing pressure to make things happen. so it'd be closer to energy than to rumble's. but it'd be stronger at higher amounts like rumbles is.

i think you can safely leave blitz, game balance is more important than thematics at this time.

Seth Lightheart2 votes

At first I wanted to agree. But Blitzcrank uses magic. Even in his dialog he states "The magic calls to me"

P.S. I would imagine a steam golem would do the opposite. Instead of 'heating up' like rumble he would need to 'build up' his steam instead, it being release with every move. Possibly having overcharged moves when he reaches his limit like a steam engine would.

I like how you have a simple suggestion then have to bend over backwards to make it not completely and utterly broken.

That's usually a sign that it's time to move on to another idea.

Narasimha2 votes

I'm going to say no, simply because no one wants to juggle two resources. That's just way too much of a pain.

TheFrozenIsles1 votes

I thought of this as well but they can't keep him as a support if they do that. All so I will miss his Pass.

SecretAgentHulk1 votes

I like this a lot! The only change I might make is that reaching 100 heat also triggers his ult active as a failsafe. Thematically, this makes sense because he needs to release steam after overheating. Gameplay-wise, it makes sense because by this point in a fight, I'm usually trying to disengage and want the ult to clean up a bit, and for the silence while I make my getaway. Heck, you could even make Steam Release a passive that can only be triggered by overheating. Perhaps this would allow the shield to have a shorter cooldown, as it is something you can't control as well, ala Gnar.

SanKakU1 votes

It would be a huge nerf. I get manamune on him all the time and it makes him really powerful. Also, his basic ability would be ruined. You can't just give him heat and mana, it makes no sense. He doesn't even have mana problems. If you're hooking so much you run out of mana it means you're throwing away your hook intimidation presence every time you miss(and then for even longer when you run oom) which isn't good.

So yes, they could change it, but FYI it would be a nerf, and they would have to change his basic ability.

giving a costless resource on blitz would make him pretty much broken ull never be safe from him and he would just be nerfed to oblivion if this happens its better to not give supports a resource bar other than mana

Free rocket grabs are not cool or fun,

Truthfully, I dont think any kind of Rocket Grab is really fun for the person on the other side, free or not. Early and late game, the target isn't getting out of it without being extremely wounded unless they are a Kassadin and maybe Olaf. Thats why I tried to take a bit of the frustration out of it by reducing the range on Rocket Grab while below 50 Heat, forcing Blitzcrank to use his Power Fist and giving the enemy a visual warning when Blitzcrank will be trying for a long range pull.

Feels like a good idea even if I fear riot would go soraka on him by giving him both heat as an mana resource. Honnestly I feel the concept needs tweaking but involving steam should really be part of his kit. Even if it's not by replacing his resource.

Yes, I don't really care if they have to go dual resource on him, his kit is simple enough for such management. I mainly just want Blitzcrank to have to use some kind of Steam.

EDIT: I added Mana back to Blitzcrank for his passive shield, to keep his current item synergy, and to add a limit to his Rocket Grab.

Ability 2- Overdrive Toggle Off: Blitzcrank gains an extra 6/12/18/24/30 bonus armor and magic resist but is 10% slower. Toggle On: Blitzcrank sacrifices defenses for agility, gaining 10/15/20/25/30 movement speed and 10/20/30/40/50% attack speed but recieves a 15% Armor and MR reduction.

There are costs and benefits all around here. He can tank more but is CCed harder, or he can chase better but tanks less damage.

Ermhgrdbrgflrg1 votes

Inc problem solved: You can think of his mana as heat, and then we don't need to rework a champion that is finally in a good place.

If all you are going for is feel, then in any description of his abilites and interactions with items, just replace steam for mana. It works conceptually 100%, and we don't need to waste resource because some guy thinks this "might totally be really cool for real, like, really!"

That one seems pretty cool, and this kit sounds fun to play, but as an ADC player I can say that the overheated grab sounds scary as hell. Maybe tone that down a bit? Or make it generate a LOT of heat so he has to intentionally cool down to use it again.

Dumbledalfbaggin1 votes

I feel like your idea goes with the visual component of the champion in your argument very well. Unfortunately, this is something that could be hard to balance depending on how Riot adds this. Riot could either make Blitz broken or really bad, and we don't want the solo q players to pay for it right?

Bârd1 votes

Makes rumble feel a little less unique, and four seconds of cooldown time seems a little short for a melee support, but sure, why the hell not.

ofart1 votes

That sounds like a cool idea. It could give him more risk when he overloads while allowing skilled players to dance around that line for more damage. The only thing is that Blitz is balanced around being cooldown and mana gated. You really don't want him to be able to spam hooks all day.

Only change that was good for support blitz was the last one. instead of aa speed why not a buff to Mr/arm

I wasn't necasserily trying to push Blitzcrank in any certain direction. Diversity is always a good thing, but that isn't what I was going for.

I can see Heat going forward for Blitzcrank being a complex thing. I like that Steam Mechanic mentioned earlier. Im going to construct a kit and see if it works better.

What if you removed his mana, which you've said is solely there to gate his Q use, and replace it with this: (?)

Q - Rocket Fist - ACTIVE: Blitzcrank fires his right hand in the targeted direction, dealing magic damage to the first target it encounters and pushing it to the end of this ability's range. If Blitzcrank has Power Fist active when he casts this spell, he instead pulls the first target struck.

Danger Zone: The range of this spell is increased by 100%, and the damage is increased by 50%.

Thoughts? His inital cast range would be something like 450 or so, doubled to 900, rough numbers, can be tweaked.

How about NOT changing any of his abilities from their current state, NOT using two resource bars, making his cooldowns higher, making his W NOT A TOGGLE, and if you're going to make him heat reliant, make his tankiness higher. As someone who plays blitz frequently I can see so many ways your proposal would be broken, overpowered, or otherwise overloaded, including two resource bars, %based mana costs, controllable and throttleable cycling shields, DPS auras, and CC. Basically this kit looks to me like you put rumble on blitzcrank's back and made him mega-gnarumbecrank when overheating. That's my opinion on it.
