The Risk Of Buffing Doran's Shield

Right now we see more and more ranged or semi-ranged toplaners bullying the melee ones out of the meta. It is super frustrating to play against them and they aren't really what a toplaner is supposed to be, so something needs to be done about them sooner or later.

Most people think that buffing Doran's Shield and its passive would be a nice way to do that since it too is an item that is outperformed by most of the other starting options and it is specifically made to deal with getting bullied out of lane with ranged autohits and ranged single-target spells.

The reason why it super risky to buff it though is actually the botlane.

There was a time when most supports, especially the tanky melee engaging kind of support, started with Doran's Shield instead of the supporting items because of how hard it counters ADCs in the early game. After a lot of nerfs it became what it is today with the side effect of it also completely disappearing from toplane.

With the early game now being much more important than ever before, buffing Doran's Shield just holds the risk of it dictating the botlane meta even though that was not the intent of it.

I personally think it would be better to give individual nerfs to those champions. If you remember when mobile carry toplaners were getting too tanky not too long ago they fixed that problem over the duration of many patches to the point where they were back in line again - just take a look at the patch history of Yasuo or Ekko. Even though it took a long time it did not have the side effect of accidently nerfing or buffing other champions like changing items or game mechanics would.

ADCs are much stronger early game than they were previously

fervor of battle and early armor pen makes up for the small amount of damage blocked by Doran's shield

plus, it's a reasonable trade-off for the loss of gp/5 and the heal item 3302 gives; if it became a niche buy to counter lane bullies I wouldn't be too upset with it

that said I didn't play when this was a problem for bot lane so I can't really say i actually know how it'd go down

You simply have to add an extra passive onto Doran's Shield that says something along the lines of "If there's an ally champion within X distance for 30 seconds or longer, you don't get the damage block". Boom, solved. The only time this would hurt top laners is when they group midgame (and the passive is at it's least useful).

The reason people don't buy the doran shield is because:

  • Corrupting pot is OP (stronger than doran for all-in, 3 charges, AND refills)
  • Only allows you to start with 1 pot

Honestly just remove the op corrupting pot and the rest will work itself out.

The reason melee champions suffer in top lane is because... they are bad players. Most viable melee tops have sustain, gapclosers, a shield, or something useful in their kit. Rumble, Riven, etc they all do fine?????

Well Riven and Irelia are hard counters to most ranged champions so it would just make sense that they are strong in the meta too atm.

Rumble on the other hand is more of a semi-ranged than a melee champion in my opinion, similar to Jayce or Gnar.

I mean why not make bot lane even less about the laning prowess of the adc? we already have a meta in which only the most annoying adc, mf, has any power in lane. And Jinx is strong because lane doesnt matter to her. so lets just make adc's have the least ability in the game to influence the game based on their skill. lets just tie the adc to the support completely. beccause everyone likes support role better right.
