Sustain champions are unable to deal with current mage builds (Morellonomicon)

Ever since Riot decided to nerf item 3174 , which made it no longer gold efficient when compared to item 3165 , almost every mage taken Morellos as their go-to mana regeneration item. The problem resides in the fact that Morellonomicon is a hard counter item to champions that rely on sustain to survive in teamfights Swain Aatrox Zac DrMundo Vladimir and there may be a couple that I did not mention.

Under normal circumstances this would not be a problem, but with Morellonomicon being picked up as a primary CDR/mana regen/AP tool, the grevious wounds passive has made it almost impossible to play a health sustain champion effectively.

The passive needs to be removed from this item and put on an item that tasks the buyer to make meaningful sacrifices in its purchase. Otherwise you take an entire class of champions and handicap them for the simple reason of wanting an incredible item with AP/mana regen/CDR.

What are your thoughts?

EDIT: I just want to be clear that this is not a "buff Athenes post." I am concerned about Morellonomicon's passive making it too risky to pick certain champions because they rely on sustain. Grievous Wounds just cannot be on a common core item for the sake of champion balance, especially when sustain tank and mage exist in the form of more than 4 or 5 champions.

The solution is to revert the mana regen nerfs. Even in the 2014 LCS, champions like Zed dominated. Waveclear stalling hasn't been too large of a problem since Ziggs got nerfed. Champions will then finally have reason to buy their chalice's again, instead of just settling for Morello's everygame, and sustain champions will stop being needlessly hurt.

item 3174 just doesn't provide enough mana regen without having a high mana pool. You have go to out of your way (buy tear) on most champions in combination with Athene's to get the most benefit from it.

Athenes needs either:

  1. Mana regen nerf reversion (not likely)
  2. Increased AP for better efficiency
  3. Add mana as a stat
  4. Increased magic resist to turn it into a niche anti magic damage item.

Athene's is equal to Morello's if you keep an average of about 60% mana. This is assuming you build no mana items. The buff from 1.5% to 2% made it viable to take if you want the MR over the AP. And the bonus mana on assist/kill is quite strong late game.

What it's not worth when compared. Is 2700 gold. While Mana Font is in theory stronger. It makes up that cost by being riskier.

15% max mana on kill or assist isn't worth 400 gold. The MR needs to go up, and the cost needs to slightly go down. Say back to 40MR and a cost of 2550. And this cost difference isn't factoring the GW effect.

Some things are just change for the sake of change. This is what Riot just doesn't understand. Yeah, the jungle changes were necessary because the old S4 jungle didn't provide enough strategic options and camps were too weak, but the S5 jungle still needs more work because of a lack of pick diversity, and guess what? The mana regen nerfs also directly influence what is viable in the jungle. Yes, Riot, making more changes can provide you with more 'levers' to balance around, but the problem lies with choosing the right elements to be levers (not the S5 mana regen nerfs).

Sustain isn't fun to fight against, it really isn't. Playing melee vs Nasus or Aatrox is cancer, and fighting against Vlad as certain mages, yeah, fuck that.

While sustain match-ups may be annoying, eliminating these champion's ability to compete by purchasing an incredibly common and desirable item is toxic in itself.
