Which mage supports? Janna and Bard? Maybe Morg?

Everyone else is just a weak cookie cutout of those three. Hell, picking Sona will just get you reported by both teams for assisting enemy, regardless of outcome.

Maybe in high elo where she's garbage which is why she needs a buff.

Well, the main complaint is that tank supports are dominant. Dominant, but not quite OP I guess?

However, a quick look the stats show that... well, variety isn't bad. If we completely ignored Thresh, there's actually quite a decent number of support mages as well as tanks being played.

It wasn't nearly as bad as earlier this year, when it was Thresh Blitz Leona Janna.

can you please tell me which mage support that are not named Janna and Morg are actually being played? and the only reason you even see Morg and Janna being played as often as they do is because they counter the tank supports to some degree. Nami, Zilean, Sona, Support Lulu, Karma? they are picked yes but when you compare them to tank supports they just can't even compare and the utility ratios and the fact that they need some amount of gold in order to do decent is an issue. Right now it's just Thresh, Braum, Blitz, Janna, Morg and Alistar the ones who are mainly picked with Soraka getting up there because people have actually started to learn that she can just sit back heal and not get hit by random skillshots and if the game goes long enough just build a Warmogs and have infinite heals

Well it really depends on what you definite as "actually being played." If you want to talk over the top popular, as in above an 7% pick rate (since there's a drop between Soraka and Nautilus), then out of the eight there are three mage supports. Now, five tanks and three mages, obviously tanks are favored but I wouldn't consider it worrisome.

Now, if we decided on 5% or higher, that adds three champions into the pool: two mages, one tank. Bringing up the ratio of "played" champion to five mage supports, six tank supports. Which, honestly, isn't that bad.

I'm in the boat that mage supports need some love, but I honestly think the problem lies with top lane and jungle right now. Due to the popularity of duelist junglers and bruiser top laners, having a tank support is great because they make up for the lack of cc your team has while not needing protection and peel like Soraka would. You can blame the cinderhulk scaling nerf and the armor items nerf. However, I don't think that tank supports are a problem (except with some exceptions, Thresh is just too damn popular due to his versatility and no amount of number nerfs will change that). You can't balance one lane without affecting the others, and I'm thinking that tank supports before this season and now are popular due to other lanes.

tank supports have been favored for pretty much 2 entire seasons now and the only mage supports that are being played right now are those that counter what the tank supports do. Tank supports have been better than mage supports the instant Riot introduced their "utility scaling". Tank supports are an issue right now and it's getting extremely boring every single time i play or i see any of the competitive matches or when i want to spectate a high rank match to see 9/10 2 tank supports on the bot lane or Janna/Morg.

"if we decided on 5% or higher, that adds three champions into the pool: two mages, one tank. Bringing up the ratio of "played" champion to five mage supports, six tank supports. Which, honestly, isn't that bad." sorry but no. This owuld be ok if it actually meant anything and not having to see the exact same bot lane every single time. You see the exact same ADCs being played, the exact same supports being played. Bot lane is boring and stale right now and half of the issue is the tank supports just not needing to build anything to be effective while mage supports need some amount of AP in order to do decently. Tank supports don't care if they don't get items, they just need to unload their entire kit into someone and they did their job so they can die
