Righteous Glory - The Answer to Immobile Champions

zecastar··38 votes·7,156 views

Every time I see something like Kog, Ashe, Twitch, etc. I am reminded of Righteous Glory still being an item in the game. Although, it feels much less glorious now.

So I wonder, what are your thoughts on the currrent state of Righteous Glory?

Righteous Glory has fallen off of it's pedestal because it contradicts itself.

Having lost Valor's Reward, there's no reason to build it early game. And at the same time, Valor's Reward is much less useful late game, so you don't wanna be building a Catalyst after 20 minutes.

I think Riot wants people to buy Catalyst and sit on it, expecting to upgrade to Glory come late, but with the gold you spent on Catalyst, you could have something much more useful. If you need Mana, you could have a Glacial Shroud and be on your way to a Frozen Heart or Iceborn Gauntlet. If you need health sustain, you just buy pots early and keep building what you want.

Righteous Glory needs some changes. I would say, either put Valor's Reward back on it, or make it build out of something more useful. Maybe two Crystalline Bracers and a Raptor Cloak, with the active replacing the Cloak's Point Runner passive, and trading Mana for Armor.

Durfain9 votes

It really makes no sense - it's one of the only items in the game that I can think of that you're actually punished for upgrading into because of the removal of a passive part of one of the component pieces.

My Waifu Vanilla2 votes

Banshee's Veil used to do it when it built out of Catalyst, but the point still stands that it is lackluster to lose the passive for a subpar item.

BastionKross12 votes

What item niche is Glory intended to fill? The niche where it's an item with defensive stats that increases movement speed to get to a target, and then a slow to stick to that target. Does this sound familiar?

item 3742

Dead Man's does almost everything Glory does, but better. Mana? Nope, we got armor instead; a stat that every champ can use. An active that you can forget to use or use at the wrong time? Nope, we have a completely passive, automatic item instead; so it's harder to screw up using. Let's not forget that Dead Man's also does damage when it does it's thing, does Glory add damage? Nope.

Hell, the best advantage Glory has over Dead Man's is that sustain passive on the Catalyst; and Glory loses that when you upgrade it. I mean sure, Glory has an AoE MS boost and slow, but that just means you can be disappointed in your team when they don't follow up your engage with this item.

All in all, the combination of harsh nerfs and Dead Man's meant that Riot took Glory out behind the woodshed and put a bullet in it. The item is going to need serious changes to distinguish itself from Dead Man's if it wants to be relevant again.

ValyrianBlade3 votes

The key difference is that RG gives the MS to your allies as well.

Which isn't a huge thing, since your allies are often either able to attack from range or able to dash/gap-close some other way. So it's more efficient for each person who needs the MS to build DMP rather than RG.

The buff I'd like to see to make RG stand out? On active, grants the MS and breaks all slows and snares and immobilizes. Perhaps it needs nerfs to compensate, but that would be a very sought after item.

4th3t0s1 votes

Even then, there's item 3069; except the bonus MS isn't situational whether you're running away or engaging.

IcyPepper1 votes

Well, to be fair, RG does speed up your entire team and gives you a small, aoe slow on the active.

But on the downside, certain champions that would build RG already have some manner of disrupting the enemy team, making it redundant. The passive on DMP is more useful, since your team doesn't need the speedup if you can cc the entire enemy team anyway.

TheThundersRoar10 votes

The real problems are the unnecessary mana that you have to pay for and the build path.

When I buy Righteous Glory, it means I want to tank for the team. AKA I want to engage and I want to be beefy. Hence the active and the health, and I am willing to pay for them. What I don't want to pay for is the mana. I don't need it. It's not the stat I am looking for in Righteous Glory, and it drives the item's price too much. Scrap it and change the build path, and it would be way better.

Which leads to the other point: the build path. A health regen item and Catalyst? Like, come on. Mages could use Catalyst. A tank does not want Catalyst. And the rest of the build path? Seems like such an unsatisfying buy when compared to, say, a Giant's Belt, or a Chain Vest, or a Negatron Cloak.

The item is nice, but unless I'm already ahead and able to pay for the shitty mana, and I just backed with 2k gold and I can afford to buy all the components at once so I don't feel like I just walked back in with nothing, it's way better to just buy a proper tank item.

kile14710 votes

It's not that catalyst is bad on tanks, it's that generally RoA is better on tanks that want Catalyst. If you want health, mana, and a bit of sustain then chances are you want AP too.

Last season, Riot nerfed Righteous Glory since it was crowding out and being a better item than Talisman of Ascension in every right. Then they reduced the cooldown of Talisman of Ascension to 40s. Both items were great. Then they nerfed Righteous Glory again, and when preseason started, Talisman of Ascension received a heavy set of nerfs. Now, both items are pretty mediocre with much better choices over the two.

SkyblazeHydraX32 votes

I don't build it because oddly enough, it doesn't feel "selfish" enough. It feels like something I would build for my team, not for myself.

Since they nerfed it last year it's been more like, "Mediocre Kudos" and sadly hasn't gone anywhere since then

Give a Sivir like ult in movement to the entire team.

There is no chasing. There is no back line that can't be reached. You just literally close all gaps with just one person on the team with this combo.

I main Janna so Tailwind isn't exactly making things easier either. Especially if i have Captain enchantment on my Mobility boots.

It's like #1 item smart Olafs buy in ARAM.

That's pretty much all I've seen it so far.

THESuperStuntMan2 votes

Things become bottom-tier when you nerf them twice even after everyone stops using it.

Same thing happened to Kha'Zix over a year ago now.

But to be real, the big problem is the mana. Basically everyone would rather have the mana taken off and have a cheaper item then spend the extra on a stat they don't care about.

Sohleks2 votes

They item was hugely popular in high elo and competitive play last year around this time. Only team oriented players and characters wanted the item still though.

But Riot nerfed the RG just prior to the juggernaut release patch, which had the then overpowered Black Cleaver (hp and cost nerfed since then). Top lane changed to a bully/killer/carry lane for a while. And while recently it's swinging back to tanks thanks to how impenetrable they are mid game and changes to armor pen systems and things like buffed sunfire and the discovery of Rot's uses maybe RG received one too many nerfs

I think the RG nerf to remove catalyst restore was improper considering how rushing the item left you vulnerable to the killers in the top lane that were there for a while. And yet maybe buffing RG in a different way is probably best if the item was too annoying...

However I feel like if the item isn't attractive in the first two major buys it won't catch on in favor of beefier purchases. So bring back the catalyst proc to make it rushable. Or maybe buff its HP so maybe you can consider it as a 2nd tank item. Having no resist stats is quite a sacrifice in a tank item.

I think when deadman's came out it directly overshadowed RG boasting more hp AND armor and a similar function.

Slamurai Jack1 votes

The new Black Cleaver came well before the Juggernaut rework. Black Cleaver was changed to it's current incarnation in 5.8. Juggernaut Patch was 5.16.

Lovely Pants2 votes

Righteous Glory requires very specific planning to be useful. Catalyst is an expensive sustain item which most champions who are not going for item 3027 can find cheaper alternatives for. Up-front damage reduction is preferred later in the game. The mobility-stickiness niche has more individually attractive items initem 3742 anditem 3025 with item 3009 helping to close the distance if necessary.

Also, item 3060 and item 3512 are in many cases simply more attractive buys in stats and strategic value when you're looking to fit a wider gameflow shifting item on your build.

In a world where item 3301 is very seldom purchased on any champion except Soraka, I think it's safe to say that we players don't really value that group mobility over stat efficiency.

It is really broken that Riot hasn't fixed this. There are still groups that are going mid and abusing banner and zz' on side lanes.

I'll still buy the medallion on many champs if something goes wrong in champ select. Like, if my support pick is countered hard and it's just way too risky to try and leverage the FQC line, I'll go for medallion for better and safer gold gen.

Lovely Pants1 votes

Often I just wouldn't pick that matchup if I wasn't sure I could maintain presence in lane, but certainly medallion is the smarter buy now and then if you get counterpicked or have a team comp in mind that you're willing to take a tough lane for. Soraka just especially needs to keep her distance in certain matchups. I would say Janna would like to use it more frequently as well, but there are few situations at the moment where I feel threatened enough in lane with her to give up the early offensive pressure. You would think more tanks might enjoy the Talisman line, but again, it's hard to give up up-front tankiness on a tight budget and even in the more oppressive lanes it's pretty easy to get Targon's execution. The mana regen can help a few.

More speaking to player preferences than relative power of the items, though. Item use statistics show pretty clearly just how poor the power afforded by Talismen is perceived. I imagine in the current state of the game the extra damage from FQC for early trades and picks is so valuable to players that few really care about the mid-game gold benefit you would have with medallion even if you can't reliably trade, for example. FQC also steps on Talisman's toes a little as an engagement/peeling tool with the long range vision and pick potential.

Righteous what? Iv never seen this item used, is it new, is it old, who builds it... is it AP, AD, HP? Sorry, most of my builds have about 8 items to choose from (not counting boots) and 3-4 of those are the same every game with the rest being a choice between: Extra damage, extra HP, extra armor, extra MR, armor pen, magic pen, extra sustain (life steal, spell vamp, regen), or a combination of two or more of those stats.

What ever this Righteous thing is, it must not meet the power curve of the others, cause I dont see anyone else building it either.

I make jokes and all, but it is a decent "tanky support" item. Its not too expensive, it has a nice active, gives some nice stats... but I agree, losing Valor passive makes me not want to build it EVER in a lane as a support. The catalyst component is too expensive for a support to build and lose the passive it provides. I feel that in this META it also doesnt provide any resistance stats that the average tank will have a hard time finding space in their itemization for this over Iceborn or Frozen Heart as a way to get more mana. The active is very strong, but teamwork in this game outside of pre-mades is pretty low, so an active that creates teamwork is of lower value on average as well.

Its not a bad item, but I feel tanks have better options, supports who I feel it would be great for (I think Taric, Leona, Thresh and even some APs: Sona, Karma, Lulu) would rather keep the Valor passive for the HP/mana sustain the Catalyst provides, so they dont bother with it since the finished item loses it.

Part of the problem is also the active, its only for initiations, you cant escape with it, so its very limmited also. In the META now just plain moving fast is better so you can get away is important, and its move speed is only good for moving toward enemies/enemy turrets.

My thoughts, I had to pick Teemo's stinky balls cause that was funny, but the other options seem really arbitrary. I give the item a 3 out of 5.

Sadly they have pretty big balance issues especially when it comes to items. All I can ever think is that the balance team only pays attention to LCS and even then they do a very poor job of it. (ali/corki nerfs? Coming soon™?)

RG may not be in the best spot but I really think Corki is overrated and his competitive performance since the nerfs isn't that impressive. His dynamic queue winrate even after a lot of games also seems subpar. I think he's good but not in need of any nerfs.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

The second the enemy ADC catches up to Corki's midgame power spike, he just turns into a champion that is really only useful every 5 minutes with his telegraphed package. He is good now in a meta that CAN be decided in laning phase, but if that doesn't go your way he falls off very hard since his AA range is piss poor and doesn't have a REAL escape if someone looks at him funny (Valk can get interrupted by a number of things).

Dataless1 votes

I still build it when I play jungle Maokai. But that's about it.

Ant Reformed1 votes

Trash tier item, it got too many nerfs, I would only build it if you were 30/0 and wanted to have an easier time diving the enemy team. Plus it gives hp+mana, health alone is a trash defensive item unless far ahead, mana isn't that useful on tanks or bruisers, and the active can be done with talisman of ascension by a support, but is easy to counter if the have frost queen's on support or mid (or any slows).

Valhalla Rising1 votes

lol the choices are stupid so im just not voting, but Id say rightious glory should get some flat stats back since it's passive was nerfed.

Llanite1 votes

It does not fit into a game that relies on kiting and accurate skill shot.

It was retarded back in the day where they rush to your squishy at 700 ms and not even LB double dash could outrun it.

Steelflame1 votes

I've been grabbing it a LOT on Alistar lately. The great thing about it is that I can build a ruby crystal and Crystaline, and if the state of the game changes, I turn those into a locket or something, and if its in a position to reward it, I can instead push the RG. The fact I could sit on the double ruby helps a lot. And with the mana regen mastery, more mana is not a bad investment, maybe not 100% optimal, but that grants you more mana regen as well. And RG helps enable picks where otherwise I might have to flash, and even then with the flash I probably would be too far ahead of my team.

Wimbledofy1 votes

Too many options to vote for :/ and there's still no middle option... You have terrible horrible and garbage which are all basically the same word for describing how bad it is. There is no slightly bad option, or no okay option.

Scoroct1 votes

While the item is somewhat bad since it doesnt give any armor/mr, something I have found to be very effective is to get catalyst or the whole righteous glory and then rush zzrot portal since you just need resists and have tons of hp already.

Jo0o1 votes

As a new player without pre-nerf context, I really wish it packed more punch. I'm currently focusing on playing Nautilus, and the activated ability plus health is really sweet on that guy, but I can't help but feel like I'm drastically over-spending for what I'm getting. At any point in the game where I'm not actively charging into a team fight, I've got a dud item cluttering my inventory.

Nekusen1 votes

its ok, the problem is, why pay for something champs like Malphite and Alistar have as an innate ability ?

Athenes Lulu1 votes

More like a super-duper situational kind of item.

My stance, though, is there's "just better things to build".

Samflash31 votes

I think the buildpath is solid but it really needs a strong niche. If it has defense items in it, it's gonna compete with the others Riot has designed (and as of right now, Dead Man's chest will give it a run for its money). I've said it should get a passive active effect that spells, "Catalyst". Something similar to Odyn's veil. That is,

Righteous Glory Stats +500 health +300 mana +100% base health regeneration

Passive UNIQUE: Reduces and stores 8% of damage received. ( Catalyst passive shrunk into a manageable feature - Helps against all damage sources except true damage, turrets, or fountain lazer)

Active UNIQUE: UNIQUE: Grants +60% Movement Speed to you and nearby allies when moving towards enemies for 3 seconds. When this speed boost ends, it emits a shockwave, slowing nearby enemy champions by 40% for one second. The shockwave deals 100 - 200 (based on level) + (stored magic damage – max 400) magic damage to nearby enemy units (90 second cooldown) (525 range).

It gives an incentive to run after the enemies, and the enemies know that so they'll try and spread out. And yet if they get caught, the slow isn't as punishing. Finally, defense passive makes you feel good about picking Righteous glory and is more valuable for a support.

Maokai item 3070

CoolKnightST1 votes

Righteous Glory need it's price decreased. I would love to see it was as a tank support option despite the item 3010 isn't that usefull for duo lanes in my opinion.

So I only see 3 options with it:

#Option 1

  • Price decreased to 2300-2500 with stat reduction to ballance it out.

#Option 2

  • New Recipe: item 3801 + item 3067, pushing it more towards the support direction.

#Option 3

  • Replacement for item 3056
  • item 2053 + item 3067
  • POINT-RUNNER passive get removed on upgrade
  • Ohm active no longer exist (was useless anyway)

i love righteous glory, i hate that its only viable on certain champs like maokai and nautalis if even

Elikain1 votes

Well. i could argue that Righteous Glory is more useful on Juggernaughts but Garen and Morde (who have no hard CC) don't have mana to worry about, therefore making this item even less effective. It offers no damage for a chance to engage. This can however help Illaoi, Volibear, Maokai but it's clear it doesn't serve the purpose for all champions needing an engage that have to give 2.6k gold it.

I'd say that if the price dropped for about 100-300 gold, it may become a cheeper tool for engaging again which is what this item was supposed to do anyway? Judging by it's price, it looks like it's mid range buy but it lacks the stats to be a meaningful buy anyway. A slight buffing would be in order?

Tobias Brackner1 votes

I see Rightious Glory as a snowball item. Helps you run down the enemy team.
