Why does it cost so much BE for mastery 6 and 7?

Eedat··13 votes·3,098 views

Are there any plans to change this soon? The prices just don't make sense. I'm not sure why it costs BE at all, let alone such largely inflated prices.

Please keep this civil. I want a thread where a Rioter can actually respond without feeling like they're walking into a trap.

Because it's the same value as it was before the currency update

Lux or Rando8 votes

Stop sucking on Riots BS. It's not the same.

420 grams3 votes

How is it not?

They costed 600 before the update, the update multipled the value by 6.5, and 600 * 6.5 is 3900. I just don't understand where it's not the same

Lux or Rando4 votes

3000 is not the same number as 600.. -_-

420 grams3 votes

Value isnt the same thing as number lol

Maybe this will help you understand: 100 pennies is worth 1 dollar. Obviously 100 is not the same number as 1, but the value of 100 pennies is the same thing as the value of 1 dollar.

Funny how wrong you are. So cute.

Yet im still waiting for a legitimate counter argument.

People have already shown you, yet you still think you're always right. So LELELELEL.

Where? The only thing I see is the one guy saying it's because it's a different currency (which then went on to use incorrect numbers for data which kinda invalidates their creditabilty).

I'm a numbers guy, please show me with data how I am wrong and how 100 pennies is not the same value as 1 dollar because I honestly can not see how it's not

i did..

{quoted} consider this...

you have a mortgage on a house

your bank say they are going to raise the cost of that monthly mortgage by 6.5x, but also increase the money in your bank account by 6.5x.

except.. you're not getting a raise... from your job

now tell me.. how many of you will still be living in that house after a year?

420 grams1 votes

Oh, didn't see that since it wasn't a reply to my post.

Although it's not true since we DID get a blue essence raise. Before the update you could only get 1100 essence a month if you got great champ shards from all your boxes. Now we can get more than just from the first win of the day bonuses, factor in leveling capsules plus all the boxes you're still getting and oh boy did we get a fat raise

and was that riase 6.5x? and wtf are u talking about "1100 essense month if u got great boxes? what

what we did is buy a "mystery champion shard" with 1700 ip and got blue essence, and normally 2-3 of those was enough to upgrade (one of u got lucky)

you are thinkning og blue essense as ONLY blue essense. it is not .. its actually the new form of IP.

and not only are u getting IP (aska blue essence) at the same rate. you are also NOT getting what would have been "old" blue essence" because it is now your ip.

so u lose both way.

420 grams1 votes

A good box (high value champion shard) would give 275 blue essence. You could get 4 of those bad boys a month. 275 * 4 = 1100.

It would always take at least 2 since a 6300 champion gave only 330 blue essence and the cost to upgrade was 500/600.

And it's good that we're not getting blue essence at the same rate since we're getting it at a GREATER rate. And now you don't have to spend ip to gamble for a conversion to blue essence via champion shards since it's now one currency.

So we win in every way

Sailor Mint2 votes

It's close enough.

1100 old BE* 6.5 = 7150BE

Once you've gone through and used your Hextech Chest old BE stockpile (if any), your primary source of old Blue Essence was Mystery Champion Shards (at 1700IP a pop).

At a 275 old BE average disenchanting rate, you'd need 4 Mystery Champion Shards per Mastery Rank 7. That's minimum 6800IP (4 * 1700 = 6800).

Long story short:

  • 1100 old Blue Essence would take at a **minimum 6800IP to aquire. **
  • Any Mastery 7 champions you got before the change is 7150BE you didn't get.

Worst case scenario, it costs 5% more BE than it would cost IP. But BE acquisition rates are ~10% higher than IP. In the end, it's pretty similar.

Eedat7 votes

No it's not lol. BE was only used it Hextech crafting. Now it's the main currency

420 grams2 votes

So? To get blue essence when you didn't have a chest/key available you had to spend ip on a champion shard to disenchant for essence. Now it's just one currency

Eedat4 votes

You had to spend 1300 IP on a champ shard. Now you have to spend the equivalent of like 3-4 times as much BE to do it.

420 grams2 votes

1700 and you had to buy at least 2 to get enough essence

Śhunpo2 votes

Mathematically false.

I'm exaggerating. However, you did get IP more consistently than you do BE AND you didn't get it more slowly as you played more.

I'm exaggerating. However, you did get IP more consistently than you do BE AND you didn't get it more slowly as you played more.

Of course you were. but acknowledging it is exaggeration doesn't mean the exaggeration stops being "an overstated falsehood".

The consistency, however one chooses to define that, is irrelevant to the current topic of total value and the fact that earnings can be charted on a slope doesn't matter to points actually received. (Simple example, say it was changed so games were reduced by 20 on average but first win of the day was 1000BE. Yeah, points per game goes down drastically with more games played so "you get it more slowly as you played more", but that's doesn't matter in a comparison to what is actually received nor does it automatically make one lower, now does it.) Those points are irrelevant to the issue. When one looks at the numbers, the difference is so far looking pretty negligible, and combined with the lack of rune cost and the shards making unlocking champs and mastery easier, it looks to be better. Even if it turns out down the line that based upon my play patterns I am earning a bit less points per game, I'm still happy with it because I'm a hundred thousand ahead already. I'll keep looking at data into next year to make sure it's the case, but it looks fine as it is.

Śhunpo1 votes

Ok, let me give you my personal experience with BE. I've only gotten 10k for getting to level 54....which is around about 100-200 games. If this were the old system I would have around 15k-20k by now.

The consistency is not irrelevant to the topic at all since the game is literally forcing us to open lootboxes as our primary means of income. Lootboxes by definition provide us with RANDOM content which is priced differently based on shard tiers.

Shards do not make unlocking champion mastery easier at all. This is actually my biggest gripe with the new system. I feasibly cannot unlock any of my current champ masteries fast enough, and as a result I have 16 mastery tokens lying around which I cannot unlock. If this were the old system I would have all if not most of them unlocked by now.

As for unlocking champions I agree and disagree. It's easier to unlock champions in general using shards, but those champions will be random as opposed to chosen.

I do agree with the lack of rune cost, however, let's be real here, you still pay for rune pages, so the cost for runes is still technically there.

I do agree that you CAN get more BE than IP, but it's purely up to chance. Additionally, I'd like to also remind you that you get rewards at a slower rate as you get higher in level, meaning the old system is much more suited universally for each player since it rewarded everyone in the same way and value.

SwiftKitten885 votes

ok people.. saying that "multiplying the current amount of money u have by 6.5 and multiplying the cost by 6.5 makes them equal", is wrong.. because were dont GAIN 6.5 the amount for playing

i mean consider this...

you have a mortgage on a house

your bank say they are going to raise the cost of that monthly mortgage by 6.5x, but also increase the money in your bank account by 6.5x.

except.. you're not getting a raise... from your job

Lux or Rando2 votes

Exactly, it's not the same cost.

Aedificator14104 votes

As riot said when they created the masteries 6 and 7, these are meant to be additional content for players to unlock if they want. They are meant to be expensive and somewhat hard to get. They were also designed as "something to do with your ip" for those who already unlocked all the champions.

You do not need these masteries. Not to mention that they'd lose any value if everyone had every champions lv7 too easily.

Marshbouy3 votes

Maybe they realized that getting mastery 7 on something should feel like a real investment to show your skill with that champion? I always found how easy it was to level up mastery on champions weird, as though I wasn't really earning it.

BUT, I think the current price for mastery tokens is a little too much.

ChompyWulf2 votes

I would think the answer is make the mastery tokens have a higher requirement. Like S+ only with less of a BE investment required. As is, the BE cash trap is real.

Marshbouy1 votes

I agree, I think the answer to my problem would be to ask for people to get higher grades or get more S grades.

Sona Ping1 votes

It's not a "trap"; it's doing what people asked for. It's doing exactly what it was designed to do.

It's function as a place to dump extra BE when you don't have any use for it.

ChompyWulf1 votes

They could make better BE sinks and let players who haven't been in the game for years and own all champs have a better option to show mastery.

Sona Ping1 votes

Yeah. I agree. It could be better, there could be better designs. And I also think it's not a good way to show mastery of a champion. But "you can’t please all of the people all of the time". People were asking for more mastery levels to grind their champion up to and people also wanted something to spend their Blue Essence on. So because people wanted grind they created something to grind, levels where if you got S ranks and had an icon of the champion, the shard, you combine them and get a special level above the fifth, and if you didn't have the shard, they made it so you could grind on your champion for the BE to get that too. It might be a cheap solution, but it's an appropriate one for both. For players that don't own all champions, there is an actually already an option that is great at effectively showing mastery and skill with a champion. It's one-tricking them up to mid Diamond. But that option doesn't look to be as popular with a lot of players.

ChompyWulf1 votes

You made a fairly thoughtful post...until you suggest one tricking to diamond is just that possible.

Sona Ping1 votes

{quoted}

You made a fairly thoughtful post

Thank you.

...until you suggest one tricking to diamond is just that possible.

Alright, it isn't that possible. And neither is mastering a champion, gaining full and eminent skill at the use of the champion. It's going to take a lot of time and effort to study, learn, and practice to get better and then test your studies and improve by playing against progressively better opponents. You're right, that's a lot of work and there's going to be players who won't complete that as well as those who have no interest in doing it at all. What's far easier than practicing, increasing your rating, and consistently beating progressively harder opponents over many games, is having two good games against players already at your rating. And then you name that "Mastery".

The point of that in the first post, is that if we talk about the Mastery System we have to know what it is. What it actually is, and dispense with conventions and suspension of disbelief of what it is. The frequently mentioned claims of "showing your mastery of the champion" fundamentally do not work because that is not what mastery is. The Mastery System is an activity. It's an alternative attraction provided to give an appeal to it for players who are not interested other aspects of the game, to increase its general appeal.

What does "'Play X amount of games (for BE)' - and - 'Earn two S grade on Poppy' to unlock a Mastery 6 Emote for Poppy" sound like? It sounds like "'Get 50 assists' - and - 'Heal 20,000 damage' - and - 'Win a game with Poppy, Braum, or Bard on either team' to unlock a Braumbread Emote."

The Mastery System is missions. Champion specific missions. It doesn't have anything to do with skill or learning a champion. It's an activity created as something to do for the player base. That's all they are.

However, if you look in other threads you can see that because these free, completely optional, missions have requirements to complete, there are people ridiculous enough to claim that they are being "scammed" by this.

ChompyWulf1 votes

I would argue part of what you're discussing is mastery of a champion AND mastery of the game. Having mastery over a champ, the builds, abilities, combos, synergy, doesn't guarantee mastery of other game mechanics that will enable climbing plat and above. You do make good points, and to be fair anyone could master Yi pretty easily, while Riven is intensely deep with her possible combos, cancels, and ability capability. That's why I think the BE buy is kinda crap. It really kinda is a cash trap while mastery isn't being really reflected as much.

PaffWasTaken2 votes

I remember when both the mastery and hextech crafting system was praised as "some of the best things who happened in League" and now they are both utter crap

Because it creates inflation and reduces the value of BE.

The reason for this is the new combined BE system, so that riot actually gives you less, you feel like your getting more, and people make cash purchases to make up the difference without even realizing it.

It's a marketing ploy.

vincentwu1231 votes

Because it costed 1850 for a champ shard thing before BE became main currency. And you needed basically 2 champ shards to get Mastery 6. So they made it 3700 BE because 1850+1850 is 3700.

Lux or Rando2 votes

Champion shards cost 1700 (2 would have been 3400), not 1850.
