Galio is OP and should be played more often

Why the hell isn't he played more often? He gets really tanky and still does crazy damage thanks to his passive. His W is great to save teammates and his ult can win teamfights. He is actually very funny to play. How can people not play him?

Not played in LCS. So he's garbage.

Was picked in LCS tho...

Like what, once ?

If he was picked, he wouldve been permabanned, like Veigar.

Either way he was picked. Hes not garbage but has significant kit issues. Super fun tho.

I think everyone hit the nail on head pretty well already, but the reason for people not playing him are:

  1. His kit is pretty lackluster (minus an amazing ult)
  2. He's easily countered by silences or minor displacements (a butterfly landing on him could stop his ult)
  3. His early mana costs gate his ability to poke until you get a chalice (he has some of the worst early mana costs in the game)
  4. Other champions simply out-damage or counter him (He's not amazing at bursting people, he's not amazing at poking people, and he has a hard time with assassins).

However, if you're looking for a true AP bruiser, he's definitely a strong pick. You'd be wise to take advantage of your passive by building Magic Resist as needed. Galio shines best against DoT Mages because his W will end up healing him while most champions would take damage.

galio is a monstrous addition to a 'protect the hypercarry' comp, because his ult makes diving his carry mostly suicidal and his W giving ridiculous amounts of resists is crazy too... i had a game as draven once where my galio would W me while the janna shielded me, all i had to do to kill the 6 item riven that flashed on me was right click her and stand still because i was unkillable through all the resists given on top of the lifesteal i had

Those are his downsides but I think he NEEDS downsides to prevent him from being so strong. He's sort of like the old Kassadin, he builds a stronger offense to the point where he can blow up an entire team but he's still able to be considered even a tank with defensive stats.

You could argue that he's only tanky vs magic champs but most magic resist items he builds has health and his W gives him both a ton of free AR and MR on top of it allowing him to basically ignore all burst damage if he uses his heal.

Gare Jordans1 votes

Have you ever played Galio? The issue with him is that he can maybe negate two spells with his W, possibly three if you have it rank three. The issue with his W is that it heal auto attacks the same as it does spells, so champions such as Azir make life hard for him. ADC's ruin Galio.

He cannot ignore burst damage. If three people jump on him, he'll heal off two of the initial spells, then start dropping quickly. People fail to realize that once you bait Galio's W out, he loses A LOT of his tank stats and ability to stay alive.

A Miss Fortune1 votes

Playing against someone like Azir is ridiculously easy for Galio, taking in consideration that Galio is massively rewarded for building magic resist, but his W gives him MORE magic resist, armor, AND indirectly makes all of his abilities stronger due to the extra MR, on top of that his W lets him ignore a lot of damage.

I remember 2 or 3 days ago I played Galio in an ARAM game, I got pretty fed and even though all 5 members of the enemy team were on me (they weren't all magic damage at all) with my shield they barely did damage to me and their most fed member actually healed me when she attacked me.

Gare Jordans1 votes

There's something you need to take into consideration. ARAM games mean little when trying to carry over things into Summoner's Rift. Galio shines in ARAMs because of the snowball, and the fact that the other team is literally forced to group and constantly fight.

In a normal summoner's rift game, it's hard for Galio to get his ult off correctly and reliably enough to win the fight because of all the open space and potential counters to him.

TLDR: Just because you played him in an ARAM and did well does not mean you'll be able to lane with him.

I dont know about you, but the last time I played Galio, my ultimates were dealing about 1000 damage and taunting everyone nearby for 2 seconds and my Q dealing around 600+ damage. E was about 450. Not sure what you mean by out-damage.

junglerboy167 votes

Because he is only as useful as how often he can flash into the enemy team.

If he had any mobility (even a itty bitty 300 range dash or something pathetic like that) he'd be golden.

As it stands, he suffers from the same issues pre-rework Maokai did: He has a lot going on in his kit that is really strong, but he is so unreliable when it comes to actually doing his job that having such a strong success case is pointless. 80% of the time, he doesn't hit his optimal success case, and his failure case is bad enough that he isn't worth using.

If they nerfed his damage slightly across the board and gave him some small usability buffs (like making his wind gust a dash, or something similar) then he would actually be playable reliably.

SpecterVonBaren3 votes

Make his E a dash that leaves behind the speed boost it does now and make his ult have a short channel time.

He doesn't need a dash though, he's a tanky-sustain-utility tank with high burst and a game changing ultimate, don't get me wrong here I'm not saying Galio is overpowered, but he has a LOT going for his kit.

He builds a stronger defense for a stronger offense (can build 6 Banshee's and still have a few hundred AP) while still maintaining a fairly strong amount of utility (AR/MR buff, self heal, team MS buff) and CC (AoE slow and taunt).

I think Galio should have to work for his ultimate, and at least he has a decent MS buff that also effects his entire team. I think the main reason Galio isn't played much is because of how easy it is to actually interrupt his ultimate. If Galio being able to reach the enemy was the whole reason he isn't pick-or-ban OP there's a thing called a Sivir comp plus with things like Righteous, Deadman's, or TP-Homeguards, yeah I don't think Galio reaching the enemy is the actual problem. I think that the problem is that actually reaching the enemy and ult'ing them can be completely ineffective because someone managed to knockback a massive, magical, stone gargoyle.

Silents4297 votes

Because he lanes like shit.

Weird ass MELEE attack animation make CS'ing hard, his mana problems plague him heavily and if you screw up your ult you are doomed, The W isn't going to be enough to help that.

I like playing him, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out why no one would play him.

Kal Vas Flam6 votes

He is the only champion in the game that is both overpowered and underpowered. His kit is huge but narrow in scope with many counters. He can be insanely strong or countered so easily he might as well be afk.

Nahui5 votes

His mama costs are abysmal, he can be a bit clunky, and he is basically a victim to flash. His ult can be game breaking but only if you can get to the enemy. The only actual spell you have for that is E, and it has a ridiculous cast time/animation and only marginally increases your speed. Items like righteous glory and a talisman on a supp can definitely help, but overall the only reason you'd pick Galio is for his amazing ult, but the rarity that you can pull off a good one is really low.

In the end, just remember. You can always just pick Amumu and have a similar, much more reliable and effective effect.

You don't pick Galio for dueling power. You pick him for strong counter-AP tanking ability as well as a powerful CC. That CC, however, has to charge to do lots of damage as well as charge to maximize CC. Amumu can just easily initiate and lock down anyone without thought.

FastAsHeck3 votes

I would not say amumu is a weak duelist

But you play BOTH of these champs for the team fight, not the duels.

Amumu with Liandry's + tank items is going to terrorize an enemy team while not dying quickly himself.

Amumu has a gapcloser, Galio has Flash. 10sec-ish vs 5 min, that quite a lot of a difference.

wtf amumu is an amazing duelist level 6 onwards lmao. Attacking him is like giving him more damage. And I'd take an instant 2 second hard cc with good damage over an easily interrupted channeled taunt that does amazing damage, anyday. not to mention amumu has a gapcloser

1: He's countered by AD. And AD it pretty common everywhere he goes. 2: He has high mana costs. 3: He doesn't do too much damage.

He's a great niche pick against all AP (Morde/Veigar bot, Rumble/Kennen top, Nid/Elise jg, AP mid), against Brand, and as a part of a special comp (Galio->Nunu ults, Protect the Koggles/other hypercarry).

Sire Hippington2 votes

1: He's countered by AD.

common misconception, he's amongst the top 5 base armor, he synergieses really well with item 3075 +item 3068, and the mr->ap passive isn't all that great, as his ratios are more on the low end.

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

AD is normally burstier, so his W is harder to use well than against a DoT mage.

Sire Hippington2 votes

if the stat that empowers a stady and consistant damage source(AAs) is burstier than the stat that improves abillitys and with than high cd burst rotations, we might have a serious balance problem...

Very few ap work of dots, all ad work of AAs...

Serge THE GREAT5 votes

His Q is easily telegraphed and slow His E's damage is very low His ult is easily interrupted He practically requires Flash to initiate or follow-up with his ult He has gigantic mana costs

  1. Long ramp time (bad early)

  2. Ult stopped too easily

  3. Kit is clunky

Braum Good luck making good use of that ult. (There are lots of other reasons why but others have explained it already)

Count Zubat4 votes

I can agree, he is great and he counters many AP champions completely. The biggest problem I have with him is how much mana he uses, but it's not unmanageable, although removal of mana potions might be a bit problematic for him. Great champ indeed, bringing a lot for his team. And if you have Kalista in your team, getting 5 man ult is so much easier. The synergy :)

thePandev4 votes

Galio is a good champ, but the problem directly relies in his ult.

In a meta where champs with on-hit AA CC effects like Garen and Renekton are popular, his ult is nothing more than a 0.5 second taunt that's immediately cancelled out. Even then, almost every champion has a CC ability that outranges his R radius that can cancel it.

A few days ago I even played a game with Galio mid. I used my ult about 10 times that game, and NOT ONCE did I have a full length ult.

Besides Nunu's ult, it's probably one of the hardest to pull off ultimates in the game. Of course it has the potential to be game changing, but it's High Risk, usually Low reward. As a mid laner with 3 damaging abilites, having 2 of them as skill shots and the other as very unreliable, there is no incentive to play him over someone much safer like Annie, who is actually very much similar to him but scales better as well. He'll remain a niche pick for those times that your facing 3 APs to me.

Imo, he should get a minor rework or a few tweaks that center him around jungle. I've tried it a couple of times and the sustain from W is not bad at all and ganks are almost always certain kill. It's either that or buff his AP ratios. Hell his Q got ninja nerfed by 0.1 AP one patch for absolutely no reason, he's been neglected for almost ever.

Spoofghoul3 votes

Because he feels clunky and awkward which makes him unfun to play

Jalkan3 votes

Strong, but not OP.

Xonra3 votes

How is this getting upvotes as if it is true?

He does not have good scaling on his abilities His passive is realistically terrible unless you are against a heavy ap team and building more mr than ap He has some of THE worst mana pool to mana costs in the entire game His ult can just be stopped with any small form off CC ruining a large part of his damage his abilities are a bit clunky honestly, as well as easy to avoid because they have such terrible travel speed.

He is far from OP, and I'm really hoping this was a sarcastic thread <_< This is coming from someone who used to play a lot of Galio

Sire Hippington2 votes

atleast in higher elos, the reasons ar esimple: besides ult, nearly all damage is in his Q, which is rather easy to dodge if you have a bit experience vs gallio, and most off his overall power lies within the ult, which is WAY to easy to counter. If you can lastpick him into the right enviroment, he's awsome, but if you give your opponents the opportunity to counterpick him(and there are many, many counters), he's pretty bad. And you have to ban braum, he has a secret passive that turns gallio into a wierd looking minion...

Ironically, Galio has shown a persisting trend of decreasing win rates as a player plays more games with him. The problem with Galio is that he is either extremely effective against the enemy champions or not useful at all.

For example, a Galio can stop enemy assassins such as Zed or Yasuo from 100-0ing his ADC. However, against a ranged mid laner such as Viktor and Azir, or someone who can stun him first such as Orianna and Annie, Galio is powerless to stop them from bursting down his carries.

Without his flash up, Galio is essentially only effective against melee champions.
