I think Kayn's superior willpower can be attributed to several factors. He survived being an enslaved child soldier. He was taken in and trained as a member of a shadow assassin clan. He has undertaken missions with goals he had to chase after. He is a survivor, molded by surviving some nasty things.
What about the gay hunters? They were hunters, and one was dying from battle. Sounds like no known displays of willpower close to Kayn.

Kai and Valmar aren't in their own body though.
And their still learning how to fight off the Darkin.
Kayn is also the prize pupil of a ninja school literally dedicated to forbidden/corrupting magics, and knew what he was getting into. Plus we don't really know how powerful Rhaast is compared to Varus.

Umm, isn't it more complicated than that? Like,one side you have the Darkin striving off Valmar's thirst for vengeance and taking him over,while on the other side you have Kai as the moral compass trying to lead Valmar to do the right thing. Kinda like id ,ego and super-ego.

Kayn is weaker or stronger, depending on what outcome we believe happens. In one scenario, Kayn wins and absorbs Rhaast's power. In the other scenario, Rhaast wins and exterminated Kayn. However, at current, Kayn and Rhaast coexist (if constant battling of wills can be existence).
Varus meanwhile is still in this gestalt state. He's got 2 men who were simple hunters, who were subjected to the horrors of war. They weren't trained relentless since their youth to be an iron willed killing machine like Kayn. They have each other and their love, and when Varus threatens to pull one of them under, the other pulls him back to the surface again. Also, they were both nearly dead when Varus salvaged their flesh. We currently do not know their outcome, because we don't know if Varus or the men win.
So Kayn, and Val/Kai are on the same level at the moment, because neither has gone either way yet.
