Just an genuine concern. What does it take to get your off-meta pick approved?

Craft Zeppelin··2 votes·766 views

Morgana support, brand support, Now ezreal jungle.

All of these are picks that sprung up suddenly and became approved. But I wonder what makes these picks "allright" in all of a sudden. Like I want the picks/builds I learnt from others that are effective to be used more, but most say its nonsense until I make it work in my games.

So, it takes a high Elo player also playing it and finding success. These champions kits also have very strong synergy with these roles. Morgs eternal root, cc shield, and potent team fight zone control. Ezreals natural life steal, ability to hop walls, and the early power makes him an adept jungler.

So high Elo, natural kit that makes it appealing, and lastly: dumb luck and whimsical aproval. People sometimes just don't like an off Meta pick.

Zigs bot is a great example. Very potent, accomplishes all the bot lane goals, but just its quirky nature and ap mid lane Meta made people shy away when the enemy could stack mr to beat your team.

So ya, it takes the stars aligning to have a pick become Meta.

Be high elo Win Win a lot Have a streamer realize you've won a lot Have said streamer play it and win a lot It helps if the streamer posts an over-edited montage reel on youtube

If you are a high elo streamer, you can skip steps 2-4

morgana support may not be meta right now but it's been a thing for years, same with brand support

That's his point. Brand for example used to be a mid laner. But at some point, people accepted his shift to support. OP is asking what exactly is causing people to accept that shift.

just be high elo/pro player, I remember years back you would pick support annie and be called an idiot, garbage, moron who should uninstall the game, then the next day a pro player had succes with annie ''OOOOOOOOOOOH MY GOOOOOOOOD SOMEONE PICK ANNIE WE NEED SUPPORT ANNIE'' sadly people care more about following the pro's than thinking for themselves most of the timew

All picks are alright. You can't report people for their champion picks, because the logical conclusion of that is to forcibly restrict the roster based on position in champ select itself.

Reminder Zed is supposed to be a competent possible jungler according go his champ spotlight.

i thought for sure jhin was going to be a midlaner when he was released but alas he was played adc

Same thing as Blitz and Thresh. They were both designed to be top laners IIRC. That's why Blitz has his E.

Fairyfleur1 votes

Thresh was designed support; why else would he have his W?

Thresh was designed support; why else would he have his W? . It can technically be used as a counter to non-blink champions AND on the condition youre on blue side. It also makes outrageous ganks possible if you let them push.

I've been playing Kayle support a ton now. NOBODY flames me or argues with me at all when I lock it in. In fact usually I get most honored at the end of the game. I only get flamed by idiots and in the end the whole team ends up reporting them.

In the end I guess it depends on how successful you are or if your allies check your match history or something.

Siyther1 votes

kayle has abilities that are considered "support" she has a heal, her ulti and ranged poke. That fine what pisses me off is when ppl want to play shit that offers nothing as support, like suppoert ezreal. As long as you are playing a champ that brings something worrthwhile to the table im cool with it. Viegar brand annie malz sion hell even ahri all have something that u can justify with. PLs for the love of the game dont play ez lucian corki or any assassin as support

I don't think people care if you're successful. If you go 0-15-0, then yeah you'll probably be reported. But I'm pretty sure any hero is reported in that situation. I mean, I've played Fiddlesticks top before, because no one else would go top and at the time I had literally just started playing LoL, and only knew how to play Soraka and Fiddlesticks.

If you can actually point to justification for the pick that makes your choice at least on par with an equivalent meta pick, it'll be considered okay.

For example, Pantheon isn't designed to be a jungler, but he offers guaranteed hard CC, heavy burst, a passive to sustain the jungle and global pressure via his ultimate to snowball games. His passive also facilitates tower dives to snowball early game and close out the win ASAP. Therefore, picking him isn't just trolling, because you can justify it.

Khristophoros1 votes

do it high elo normals. nobody really cares if you pick meta or not.

GrievousFetus1 votes

Also can people please start differentiating between "Meta" and "intended role"? The actual metagame is a tiny handful of champs. If you could be banned for picking "off-meta" picking Braum support would be a reportable offense currently, or Jhin ADC or Mordekaiser in any position.

The Deckowner1 votes

Someone play it in pro play, meta.

Craft Zeppelin1 votes

For the "pick" I'm saying it is this legendary one. It is just classic. Effective in a tank meta, yet hillarious.

Generally? It usually ends up being dependent upon the pick being effective while generally still staying within the "Meta" constraints of the role. The main reason why smite support nunu/singed caused such an uproar is because they generally didn't fit into what most of us consider an effective support to be. Though perhaps what they did MIGHT have been effective, they generally never spent any time bot lane supporting the adc, which is what we expect a more traditional support to do. Jungle ezreal has been such a phenomenon recently due to the fact that he's seen extensive Korean play, which led to major high elo play in other regions. He's so strong in the jungle because his kit covers most of the main things a jungler can want, IE range, mobility, and damage.
