Brand is a perfectly viable non-meta support.

I sometimes love non meta supports.. xD

Ive sen a good Yasuo support who blocked seemingly every blitz pill with his wind wall.

I picked Jarvan 4 support as last pick.

Enemy team had: Gangplank top, Karthus Mid, Varus ADC

My team had: Anivia mid, Jinx adc

I told my team his ults would win us the game because they have no dashes and we have AOE damage. I ulted. We won the game. Was pretty straightforward.

Moral: Non-meta support is great if you have a reason for it... if you're just doing it because you like the champion, maybe you should think twice.

Note: I may consider non-meta supports to actually be meta supports. E.g. Brand. He's a great support. Your reason for picking him is he's a great support.

There's still a question of whether Leona would have been a better pick. Not saying it can't work, just that there's almost always a better pick.

Why exactly would Leona have been a better pick?

I'll add the full picture to be fair:

Us: nasus, master yi, jinx, anivia, me (j4, you're arguing Leona). Them: varus, braum, Karthus, xin Zhao, gangplank

So we had no means of engaging. Sure, Leona has an aoe stun ultimate, but:

  1. the stun is much shorter than j4's arena
  2. the ultimate is aimed rather than targeted, and has a delay (can be escaped from pretty easily by anyone at the edges who you're not aiming it at
  3. her engage's range is much shorter than j4's (at best she can flash ult, j4 can e-q-flash-ult. J4 also has that e-q combo for much more mobility.
  4. j4 offers more damage once his utility is worn out.

What Leona has on j4:

  1. her e and q for more stuns during a fight (although her e only gets her in range if she lands it, whereas if you sidestep j4's e-q he still ends up beside you).
  2. free resistances (although j4's shield stacks based on # enemy champions nearby and is strong in its own right).

I'm not saying j4 is a better support at all. I play Leona support most times i get stuck in the role actually. That's why I'm shocked here, because at the time it seemed so obvious to me that j4 was a strategic power pick and i never even considered Leona despite her being my normal go to support.

I mean, when the 3 enemies with the most gold can't escape a confined area for 4 full seconds (unless they flash) AND i have two of the biggest aoe damage dealers on my team to follow up with, i think j4 was the best pick. Especially with gangplank being able to press k and eat an orange and remove any of Leona's cc but he can't eat an orange and magically get out of j4's ult...

The main problem is that while yes, their team couldn't escape the ult, neither could yours.

Had they have played properly and not been miles behind they could have made you worthless by just having Xin hard dive your carries. What do you do at that point? You're entire peel is a knock up with a super short duration, which won't stop Xin.

Personally I'd have said Thresh or Blitz were ideal into that team. Sure they have worse synergy with your team but they're two champs who punish immobile teams the hardest.

I'd also prefer Leona over J4 because she's not completely useless when behind. Once J4 sup gets behind he becomes super suicidal since he lacks the innate defences and protection from CC that Leona has.

  1. j4 offers more damage once his utility is worn out.

When not building damage that's questionable. Leona's passive does quite a lot of damage.

Not entirely sure why you think I'd get my own team stuck in my ult, i was engaging from range and they were following up from well outside.

Also, anivia offers hard cc to stop xin Zhao wrecking jinx if he manages to get there, which again is a big if because most times i caught him in my ult as well and either he mistakenly focused me when he could have dashed out, or jinx and anivia out range him (or also, often i was e-q'ing over red sides blue buff and ulting there, anivia sending in her spells from the fog of war).

Also not sure why you think we were miles ahead, my match history is broken (doesn't include my gold in the team gold advantage so it shows us behind in gold all match) but at the 10 minute mark, we were down 1 kill and a turret, i landed a huge ult on at least 4 of them and we went 5 for 1 (me being the death).

At 22 minutes we were relatively even in kills, down 3 turrets to 2 and down a dragon, i landed another good ult and got 5 kills for 2. After that point we pretty much steamrolled (getting another ace off of my next ult) but we were ahead because of those 2 aces...

I feel like thresh and blitz could have done individually well (scored a few picks) but wouldn't have offered the same ace potential (which at low elo's, you pretty much need aces to make your team secure anything). Leona would have offered something similar, but ONLY if she could get in range to do so, which j4 was simply better at.

Then there's also the fact that j4 is typically top/jungle with some damage, as opposed to maxing w first and going full tank - meaning it's more likely they'll waste time focusing me down as j4 than attacking a Leona that everyone knows is really tanky.

Maybe it only worked because I'm high silver and it would have been a miserable failure in plat+. I wouldn't change it though, i typically hate support and that game was one of the most exciting/memorable games I've played. Mostly because i had a reason for doing something unusual and it worked - which was the whole point of the first post. Off meta is fine as long as you have a good reason for it.

I play a lot of Brand supp, and recently I had a bad game. Got reported (or at least two people on my team said they were reporting me). The enemy just happened to outplay us. It was not ranked or anything yet two people on my team got super salty about it. Just did not understand.

Lol I cant remember when I play a so call real support. Unless you really count Tahm Kench as a true support.

I just dont like have to count on my adc to be good. So i play people like Sejunai and Malphite just in case I have to play by my self or get the kills.

Miss Fortune support = never having to say you let your ADC get caught out. Harass and CC for days. Gnar

Questions: is this in normals, or in ranked?

If it's ranked, then you'd better be at least half-way decent with the support you're picking.

If it's normals, then IDGAF what support you pick as long as you buy Sightstone early on. Normals are for fun/practice, not conforming to the meta.
