OTP's are weaker players then their peers

I know this will ruffle some feathers but please just take a second. Breath in, Breath out. Shelf your knee jerk emotional response for a moment and think about it logically.

What gains do you have in an ever shifting meta when your garbage at a vast majority of the game? How do you help your team if you get filled and are fking weak as hell at any other option? How does RNG getting Destroyed by a Ban or some one Picking first imply your good? What Pro can literally be removed from the equation for a win by 1 ban? Tell me about the benefits of your inability to patch gaps in a team comp if your pick has no synergy? How does it feel to face a Hard counter equal or above your skill?

Don't get me wrong, its less work and a quicker time to improve if you all in on a champions mechanics. For folks who don't have a lot of free time, or who love a kit so much its what they enjoy and makes them happy its absolutly a viable and good call to do. Don't take this the wrong way, there is literally nothing wrong with it. Just.... I feel that it handicaps a massive # of folks who hear the terrible advice of "Just OTP" .

Just do the math. Some one whos as good at 5 champions as some one else is with 1. Whos the better player?

yes and no. depth vs breadth. one can acquire a lot of meaningful depth on a champion by one tricking. alternatively one can acquire meaningful breadth on the game by not one tricking. so yeah there's things to be considered. it's more likely that someone who is one tricking will beat a counter matchup than someone who isn't, it's more likely that someone who isn't one tricking will be able to pick a counter matchup.

Lets be honest cuz I absolutely loaded my post title. I am calling folks out for when and where they get stuck. In this post the assumption is that Depth is identical in the comparison made... other wise no fucking way you could call them a peer. Its exclusively Breadth is the variable.

Honestly, I'm stuck because I one tricked such a trash tier champion. Once I got to to the level where people knew how to counter me, and where the meta picks ALL countered Nocturne, it started to get real rough. I can't first pick in any game, an target ban ruins the game for my team sometimes, and other time dying once means I lose due to his terrible kit.

One tricking a champion is a good method if you want to pull yourself out of low elo Iron-Plat, but once you get into Diamond it becomes vital that you learn other champions, or that you at least one trick a champion with actual mechanics that you can play around.

That advice is given to people who wish to climb, not to people who wish to be better at the game.

Kai Guy1 votes

Its for folks who want to climb fast. What happens after they get stuck? If they play other champions randomly because they hit a hard cap and cant break thru it?

How fun is it to have teammates who handicap your team because of this advice? Point of this discussion is highlight the negative consequences of this advice if its not framed with the right context.

Presumably the same thing other people do when they get stuck

They're not handicapping the team. They're playing what is going to allow them to perform the best. That's the whole point.

Kai Guy1 votes

I am not conveying the point completely I suppose. "If they play other champions randomly because they hit a hard cap and cant break thru it? "

In my reply to you what I am talking about the impact made by folks who cant get their pick then still chose to play + the players who get bored/frustrated so they start chain picking random champs because of Proplay/Tier lists/# of QQ threads on Boards. The ones who instantly drop from being a contributing member of the team to dead weight.

Its about an improper OTP mentality. I really do not mind OTPS who don't want to play anything else because long as they dodge they are never an issue. One simple step and you can remove negative impact. Going into a game, half assed knowing your probably going to fail is a dick move.

Ideally what I wanna see is for gameplay boards to actually start giving advice to help people improve their skill, not just rush as fast up the ladder till your stuck. It would lower some of the snowballing in the game.

depends on what you onetrick. if you onetrick horseshit champions, that actually means youre better than your peers, because youre doing well on an extremely bad champion. aatrox is a perfect example.

JackMcCarry2 votes

Such a humble and bias free example.

Kai Guy1 votes

What if some one can play 5 horseshit champions just as good and including your 1? Lets say they wanted to play Aatrox, you take it, they also have an equal skill meh champion who they know hard counters Trox. Your screwed if they pick him first. Your screwed if you pick him first.

Again, in case its not clear we are talking about OTP not just Favorite or main champs. The kind of player who has only one Trick.

Firebeard2 votes

This is a poorly thought post. Just because you one trick, doesn't mean you are unable to play other champions. For example, I enjoy playing Varus. He is BY FAR my favorite to play and my most comfortable. There isn't a matchup where I feel unable to preform (within reason). However, this does not mean Varus is the only ADC I can play competently with. From Ignites to Malphite ults to Trynd Fear, My spellshield timings on Sivir can be smooth as hell and I can quick farm to late game. Or alternatively I can play Ashe if I see a notable lack of CC and/or a lack of mobility on the enemy team. If the support auto hovers Rakan I can play Xayah, and while I admit she is one I need a good bit more practice on, I can play well enough despite practically one tricking Varus. OP just seems to have a hate boner.

This is why there needs to be clarified that there are 2 categories of one tricks. The ones who play a champion because it's literally the only thing they can play, and those that they one trick purely out of enjoyment. The former players are definitely not as good as their peers.

Also, you can change the word "champion" with the word "lane" and this is still true. A let's say top laner who can only play top is a bad player, meanwhile a top main who can perfectly fine play jungle and support is a much better player

Kai Guy1 votes

I thought we already did but apparently not.

OTP: One Trick Pony. Only able to do one thing, the very definition of the term.

Main: Literally just that, you have a main.

Community often blurs terms and it makes language less precise. For me if the two terms where interchangeable there would be no reason for folks to clarify "I am a OTP -Champion- Main."

Kai Guy1 votes

I don't Hate OTPS but I will admit some Bias here as I am not wild when they cost me a game because X Y Z happens and they cant function as a remotely beneficial teammate.

I don't mind folks who have mains. That's to be expected? I am talking about folks whos champion pool's width and depth is exclusively 1 thing.

I feel like it's common knowledge that anyone whos smart enough to know to give other people the advice to OTP, they're smart enough know the caveats that come with it. Always have a backup laner and a couple back up champs for your secondary lane that you at least know how to play. But even with all these backups you should be getting your main 90% of the time.

And picking a onetrick with a permanently massive playrate like ezreal or Lee sin is just as unwise as it is to not onetrick at all.

The better player is the one who can bring a single champ to diamond elo and not the player who wastes his time picking random champs and consistently staying in gold

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

That's why I (almost) never play Nami outside of Ranked; I make it a point not to choose her so I can practice everything else. Also there are just a lot of other champs I really enjoy playing.

That aside, my goal in playing Ranked is largely tied to me wanting to improve and progress with Nami specifically. If my goal was just "climb as high as possible" I'd have to play other things, that just isn't my goal.

Kai Guy1 votes

I get that and its why my Normals MMR is far lower then Ranked MMR.

It's 100% true, but OTPing does have other upsides beyond stronger usage of a single champion. When you play a single champion so often, you forego the both the ability to counterpick and the option of picking a champion that won't auto-lose. The end result is that you don't just learn to play to your champion's strengths but the weaknesses of other champions too. OTPing entails finding openings in even the most unfavorable of matchups, and knowledge of those openings don't just disappear when you play a different champion. You may not be able to execute on those openings with other champions, but you'll be better for it once you do get a grasp on handling them.

Kai Guy1 votes

Your not wrong but you do this even with a wider pool of champs unless your derping yea? OTP has the helpful benefit in that Its less time comparatively to learn just 1 champion and its interactions with the game. Yet if you main multiple champs why the hell would you not " learn to play to your champion's strengths but the weaknesses of other champions too" Any reason if your looking to have multiple champions ya don't learn matchups and synergy?

Far as I can see only gain is less time required. Lots of my advice for newer players is to tell them to play champions whos win conditions require gameplay mechanics.

R0ses R Red1 votes

I mean the finer weaknesses. Everyone knows Illaoi is useless without E and to go in on her once she misses it, but how many people abuse the slight delay she experiences when she uses Tentacle Smash? If you were trying to counterpick her, odds your thought process for the pick would 100% revolve around whether your counterpick provides an easy way to dodge her E and can stay out of her threat range. When you one trick, you push past the obvious both out of necessity and the fact that the obvious becomes secondhand.

as a OTP, im only afriad of one counter matchup. My Nocturne Top vs Renekton. And i have fallback options incase i get autofilled or banned, i just prefer to play my OTP(Its really the only thing i enjoy playing).

You should talk to the other OTP Nocturne guy in this thread.

eh i agree with him. Once you get into high plat/low diamond 1tricking doesnt become a viable means to push further. Unless youre 1tricking a godtier champion or a bot/support lane champion.

Imo a onetrick is someone who plays only 1 champion, when they can. It doesn't necessarily mean that they are dogshit at every other champion. What's more is that if you are a onetrick, you can focus on other parts of your gameplay (awareness, vision, map control) once you mastered your onetrick, and you can apply that knowledge when you play something else.
