Control wards...

What's a good number of control wards to buy at the end of a 40 minute game? I'm just curious, because I think I may be buying too many, and it may actually be detrimental. The last game I played I had 11. A few others have been like 7, 8, 10....

Thats anywhere from 525 - 825 gold I'm not getting to spend on items, which means I could potentially be not getting my redemption or knights vow when it could have meant something in the outcome of a fight.

Just wondering if there's some kind of community average I compare myself to?

Eh. Like 3.

2-4 depending on various factors. If you’re having to buy more than that, you’re not using them effectively and should re-examine your placements.

Technically it should be “as many as you need to keep one up at all times”, but Riot refuses to give us a slot specifically for holding Control Wards and thus they aren’t usable past 15 mintues or so.

I usually get a good 6-10 minutes out of my wards, but I find myself wanting to move them alot based on what's happening on the map. not because they're useless where they are, or they got destroyed, but because I think to myself "This would be a better spot right now."

Examples:

-Baron is on the table. -Elder is on the table. -I know there are enemy wards, but my sweeper is on C/D -Dropping one on a thresh lantern -See an enemy killing my control ward, so I move it to deny gold

and obviously.... -The ward position is no longer relevant -It got destroyed.

I don't think there's a set number that people should be buying; it just depends on the situation. Also, I disagree on the "you’re not using them effectively " part. I move my wards -a lot-, whether that be from one bush to an objective, using them to roam, clearing choke points, etc. Normal wards are good too, but having something that's powerful enough to not only allow you to clear enemy wards, but deny enemy vision while you're doing so is huge. The possibilities are endless really...but yeah, I don't think there's a set number that's anymore acceptable than any other. I think it really depends on how you use them, and how useful they are to your particular playstyle.

I've bought as many as 5. Sometimes not as a support.

Vision/knowledge is power.

Vision is invaluable. As long as you aren't doing something like spamming them in a brush that enemies are standing in and constantly clearing it, no amount of gold is wasted, and it's worth the cost, no matter how many you buy. I make it a habit to buy them whenever I can; and not just one either. They're just too useful.

Edit: I support. It's worth it for me.
