Can we, as a community, drop this whole "Holier than thou" attitude?
Can we all just collectively stop down-talking anyone who isn't gold+? Can we all realize that rank does not make you some sort of superior human being, or a part of some aristocratic society?
I'm not sure of the actual statistic, but something like 50% of players are silver, and another like.... 20 or 30% of players are bronze. Again, that might not be EXACTLY correct, but for my purposes its fair enough.
That's 80% of the player base, or more.
In absolutely anything in life, there are people who are just better than other people. That's just the nature of categorizing activities by skill level. There's going to be a huge chunk of the demographic in one place, and outliers on either side.
Being good at league of legends does not make you smarter, better, more successful, or happier. It makes you good at League of Legends. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.
It doesn't give you any sort of authority. It doesn't give you any sort of agency. It doesn't give you any sort of superiority in conversation or knowledge.... it just makes you better at League of Legends.
I've met (just last week, actually) a high-silver player who just got picked up as a NA Challenger Series analyst.
I've met a diamond player that I go to school with who feeds relentlessly when he plays with me and my gold/silver friends, to the point where we actually decided not to play with him anymore because he's too goddamn heavy.
If you're gold/plat+ congratulations. That's something to be proud of. Truly, sincerely - be proud of yourself. Its an achievement. But that doesn't give you the right, then, to start talking mad shit about anyone who's a lower rank than you and treating them as sub-human.
There is not a single player in this game that you can't learn something from. Bronze 5 to Challenger #1. Everyone has something to offer you that you didn't know before that can make you a better player. Likewise, what exactly is it hurting for you to go out of your way to help someone out that's a lower rank than you? Why is that such a seemingly taboo thing?
I love helping younger, lower ranked players. I find great joy in it. I love watching them grow, I love answering their questions. I love helping them improve, and most of all I love hearing "You really helped me out, man, thanks. I finally made it out of bronze and its all thanks to your advice"
It feels good.
Try it some time.
