when to and when not to hunters potion?

other than being a sustain jungler and not needing it, when do you guys build hunters potion vs not?

i only really play lee and shaco, and tbh i really like hunters potion and get it almost every game.

Pop one after every camp and you're pretty much always full.

Pop all 5 before a teamfight so you got a little hp boost for the fight

idk about lee but on shaco I get 0 potions, starting machete and rejuv bead. He doesnt need the health as his boxes tank most of the damage, only thing it could be useful for is not going oom ever which only ever happens to me like once a game at most when i havnt backed in too long and have like 2.5k gold

Leopards Ghost1 votes

it's the first thing i buy, unless i'm jungling & then i buy it after 2nd camp. 400 gold and you get >15 potions out of it even as a laner. best bang for your buck.

wait so you gromp/golems>buff>recall for hunters potion?

Leopards Ghost1 votes

i dont usually leash unless i'm leashing red as nautilus so it's usually ward>machete>refillable>raptors>wolf/blue>recall>hunters

im in bronze though so take it with a grain of salt. works really well for me, and i scale instead of flat-rune so my earlygame is already slow.

MotrColt2 votes

are you saying people won't leash you when you start the bot camp?

Leopards Ghost1 votes

good question. the answer is no.

MotrColt1 votes

If i can't get a leash for whatever reason maybe we got invaded and wipsed and they want to get to lane there aren't many champions that cant get away with the following clear by themselves:

golems/krugs(smite) to get to level 2 (drop ward at your red to make sure enemy doesnt steal) > raptors > opposite side scuttle (should be fast with the stun buff) > blue buff (gets level 3) > gromp > wolves.

This nets you about 800 gold and if you just want 600 gold or so for a machete/talisman and hunter's potion and you're worried about health you can stop after blue where you should have around 600 g.

Be sure to immediately go krugs then red again as you want to get tht timer up and running and make sure it isn't stolen as your ward should expire around when your finishing blue and are at gromp.

Theres no champion that I think its worth to back at 250g for just hunter's potion, I could understand at 350g for your other jungle piece though. I havn't played any champions in the jungle that can't perform this clear.

Leopards Ghost1 votes

you're just delaying your first recall. i make the 250g recall for hunters potion then stay in the field until i can afford boots and my first item (god willing);

if my team is playing well (meaning i didn't get stomped trying to gank a failing lane) i'll just jungle off the hunters potion until i hit 2200 or 3500 gold which nets me either 1) mobility boots + zeal/jungle or 2) mobility boots + shiv/jungle on 2nd recall.

then i raid until i have to 3rd recall and proceed accordingly.

eh maybe you're right, then again you are bronze so you're clearly doing something wrong. I wouldn't do it

Sick burn

Leopards Ghost1 votes

nah. games are faster in higher elo's.

MotrColt2 votes

yes because we're not sitting in our own jungle farming with hunter's potion all game

Leopards Ghost1 votes

neither am i, but you seem awfully upset.

ShinkoMinori2 votes

I am curious now, why do you take ghost instead of flash?

MotrColt1 votes

a problem but the real concern is he doesnt seem to have a jungler item in any of his games with smite

buy jungle items they give enough regen to where you often don't need hunter's potion! hunter's potion is only for when you need the extra health or mana, refillable potion offers much less than 3 health potions at the start which you can use to gank earlier. Hunter's potion sets you behind and should only be needed when necessary, not as a substitute to jungle items

Leopards Ghost1 votes

because i need to chase more than i need to jump over walls. I take flash as my secondary, with champs like Sona & Katarina.

if i need additional mobility (like with Cassiopeia mid) i use summoner 7 summoner 6

ShinkoMinori2 votes

Holy shit you are right. He also goes hunter potion in the midlane as well.

MotrColt1 votes

flash is better for engages too that ghost. there are very few situations where you are chasing someone for the full duration of ghost across an entire lane

Leopards Ghost1 votes

out the gate cass mid its ward+hunters. she burns mana, & with heal i can survive ganks even when my wards expire.

i can also sacrifice a bit of cs to stay in-lane and rush item 3028 which allows me to hold lane even 1v2.

MotrColt1 votes

right, hunter's potion is only bought on junglers because it gets a charge with every large monster slain.

Leopards Ghost1 votes

yes & no colt. i'll use ghost to race lane-coverage, escape blind ganks, race to team-fight if i'm out of position, with Yi's Highlander + homeguard he can make it to midmap in 7seconds flat.

then there was the time i was playing katarina and got caught in river popped ghost + mobility boots and pathed thru enemy blue past downed tower into enemy red bush and recalled as last person on map which allowed me to defend the push.

tl;dr it's useful. just depends on your playstyle.

MotrColt2 votes

Using a summoner to cover lane and get a wave of experieence really isnt worth it. If you aren't in teamfights and need to ghost there you need to work on your map positioning not blow a summoner for it. Summoner spells are worth so much and you seem to be using them for very unnecessary things.

You are right it is determined by playstyle but there is a reason every high elo player uses flash on almost all champions. If you're in bronze and are doing something so drastically different from higher elos you might want to realize that your way isn't as good.

the mana she gets from doran's ring far outweighs the mana from hunter's potion, no reason to not start doran's ring on mid lane mages

Leopards Ghost1 votes

true but dorans ring doesnt heal you. hunters does both, mana + hp. & the resale value of hunters outweighs the resale on dorans because i consume an average of 15 pots a game.

it's a utility item. sometimes i dont need the hp, sometimes i do. but i'd rather farm low on mana with full hp which allows me to contribute when the gank rolls around on an enemy with halfmana halfhp than sit out with lots of mana and no hp. then i pop ghost use w and auto while the jungle rips their face off.

like i said though i'm in bronze so my mechanics arent super yet but neither are my enemies.

MotrColt2 votes

thats why you get a doran's and 2 pots. if you are taking 500 damage in lane every match you need to work on your mechanics not buy better items.

you are playing not to lose hard with pots, which will keep you in bronze. if you want to win you have to get ahead with items like doran's

ShinkoMinori2 votes

talking about dorans, what do you think of little pieces of heaven adcs that decide Cull is better than dorans blade?

MotrColt1 votes

I'd still take doran's and cull on first back, I simply think its more powerful but I could see cull being argued. I just think doran's start is better still

MotrColt2 votes

upset? im not upset at all, lol. Im trying to help a bronzie if you don't want to listen you aren't in my games so it doesnt affect me at all, i really could care less, but id still try to help you

BluePolarizer1 votes

for me: never. you are already 1000 gold behind laners when you jungle due to forced smite items, why would you set yourself another 400 gold behind?

Icestar11861 votes

I only buy it if I'm playing someone with a really tough clear. I feel like it's usually not worth it.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

I never get Hunter's Potion. Hunter's is the product of the original jungle update, when clears were long and hard.

Now that you start the game with almost 200% mana regen in the jungle, extra mana isn't necessary.

I usually start with a Rejuvenation Bead. Gives me sustain both for first clear but also well into the mid game, and lets me grab a Zz'rot quicker.

alfavhunter1 votes

I buy it on tank junglers who have lower damage, lets you clear a camp or two and still be healthy, late game it's still useful until im getting better final item

MotrColt1 votes

New cooment that topic getting a little long, this is aimed at you not buying jungle items.

Not only do they provide health and mana regen that make it so you may not need hunter's potion but the reason that you absolutely need a jungle item no questions asked is because of the experience it gives you. If you do not buy it you will simply be 2 levels behind very quickly into the game which makes it unplayable very soon. You can't even get to level 2 off of your first camp without a machete or talisman.

You are starting hunter's potion because it takes you 2 camps to get level 2 and you're like wow this hurts. where if you started a machete/talisman and refillable your wouldn't hurt so much in the first place.

BloodyTompon1 votes

It also has the most sustain of any item. It's good for when you are going to lose lane and just want to survive.
