Making the Game Balanced vs. Making it Fun
Even though I'd like the latter to be considered more often I think that finidng balance between the two is somewhat impossible.
Let's take the current toplane for example.
It's balanced. It rewards you for getting a kill and taking that lead to win the game and it also rewards you for picking a good matchup. It really is super skill-based right now because if you make one mistake and the enemy knows how to exploit it they will get rewarded for their good play while you get punished for your bad play because currently, toplane is much more snowbally than it was before. It also encourages teamplay much more than it used to because it's slowly turning from an island into a lane that is actually worth ganking. On top of that, if toplane would be any less snowbally, high tier players would make it so that it becomes super stale and boring for them. Since they've mastered minion wave and vision control it is much less likely to have a kill happen in the toplane in competitive and high tier play than it is for us bronze to diamond plebs who only have a really basic understanding of that.
But that's also something that makes it really unfun to be a toplaner, for me at least. If you fuck up once you feel like you have no chance in hell of coming back and even though you kind of deserved it, because you know, you fucked up, it just makes it so frustrating that you won't be able to do anything for the next 10-20 minutes. On the flipside, if the enemy makes a mistake and you exploit it yourself you don't really can have any equal duels now because you will solostomp him unless the jungler gets involved. That's another thing. If you don't pay attention to the map and if you push only a bit too far or if you even just dare stay under the tower with half HP without your jungler either being able to assist you or not thinking about it, you WILL die. Sure that helps with opening up the map and it also rewards teamplay but after all I find the toplane that no one gave a shit about and where you could make mistakes without the enemy absolutely destroying you much more enjoyable and fun than it is today.
That combined with a lot of other things like ranged toplaners vs. melee toplaners, high mobility outplay champions who make the game much more interesting but who are just incredibly toxic, the huge snowballing aspect of league combined with the fact that supports will almost always be an unfun role if you really want to keep the game balanced just makes League for me personally less of a game that you can just play for the heck of it and because it's fun and more of a game that is becoming increasingly stressfull and does the opposite. I don't want to come home from work just to have to work again.
I'm sure there are a lot of peope who like it to be as exciting and competitive as it is today and maybe it's just nostalgia, but I really want to have the crappy no-one-gives-a-shit s2 League back, even though that's probably impossible at this point.
