I noticed something very peculiar with how placements work.

I ended Season 6 in Silver 5. After completing placements, I was placed in Bronze 5. I was expecting that so no big deal. So I began looking up all my games and I noticed that I'm being matched as I had been at the end of Season 6. I'm being matched exclusively with and against people who, like me, were Silver(in the range of B1-S3) at the end of Season 6.

It gets strange when I decided to look up people who ended in Bronze 5 in Season 6 and they were being matched with other people who were Bronze 5 at the end of Season 6. This is the thing that confuses me. I expected to be matched with both real Bronze 5s and last Season Silvers but it's only matching me with last season Silvers despite being placed B5 this season.

Can someone explain to me why this is so ? If the system places me in B5 after placements then I assume that my MMR has been set to B5 but I'm not getting any real B5 people in my games. This doesn't make sense.

It intentionally places your league lower than your MMR (which was also lowered) so you have to earn your old place back in the new season.

Your LP changes are determined by your MMR relative to your rank. So you still are closer to higher ranks than last season's bronze.

MMR is what does all the matchmaking. It as I said before it does your LP changing. It's pretty much all that matters long term after 30 games and there's a whole year ahead of us.

Ah. This is what I was afraid of. Was hoping to get some nice easy wins lol.

Welcome to Rito's broken ranked system.

Placements place you lower than your MMR. If you belong higher, it means you skip tiers with promos.

Climbing isn't just a grind. You actually DO have to be better than the people you're playing against on average.

While I no longer belong in B5, the fact that I'm being matched with people at my skill level, which is around Silver 5, means that the climb won't be as smooth as I was expecting. Basically, I'm playing vs Silver players while ranked B5. I'd have to be Gold level in skill to climb quickly.

You should still have smooth climbing. If your division/tier's MMR average is lower than your MMR, you will gain significantly more LP, and lose significantly less.

I almost never climb to my MMR and plateau (never really tried), so I always skip tiers with promos at this point.

Good point. I didn't consider this.

Well, I'll see how it goes with me. Wish me luck ;)

You are also probably getting 28 LP for wins and losing 13 LP for losses. If you stay in bronze until that equals out to +18,-18 then you will start to be matched with real bronzies.

I've only played 2 games since I was placed, both losses so I don't yet know my MMR gains. Perhaps you're right. When I did Flex placements in the pre-season, I was gaining 30LP per win.
