Placements Clarification?

Alright, so I've been taking my placements very slowly. As of right now, I've won 6 of my 8 placements.

Throughout my placements Ive been getting S-rankings for all but 1 game, 10-15 kills with less than 5 deaths constantly, multiple towers/drags taken (often times solo), and prevented my teams from getting toxic with a positive attitude.

...and yet I feel as if it doesn't matter.

I wont lie, last season I was stupid, bad, insert any insult possible here. I played ranked immediately after hitting 30 and was just pretty much terrible. I stopped playing ranked after about 50ish games and ended Bronze 4 (go ahead and make fun of me lel).

Despite doing extremely well in my placement matches so far, I have yet to see an improvement in opponents. They have always been low bronze elo, and honestly I'm getting bored just stomping them. The fact that my opponents aren't getting better indicate that League still believes I belong in the low-bronze elo. I feel that my performance shows otherwise, and I'm afraid that I'll be placed in bronze regardless of showing any improvement due to my low elo last year.

Does doing well in placements help in any way, or does last year's ranking really have that much influence on this year's placements?

Dont be too discouraged man, this season has been utterly a mess and atrocious. I played ranked for the first time last season, and went maybe 4 an 6 or 5 an 5 at the very best in placements and was put in bronze 1 an didnt touch it again ended there. This season, I had the exact same result 4 or 5 wins, and was put in bronze 5. Ive currently climbed up to Bronze 1. Ive drastically improved my own play since last season and I know exactly how you feel. I do have friends however who were Gold in the last 2 seasons went 6 or 7 wins in their placements and still got put between bronze 1 and 3. I know 2 diamond players who got put into gold 3 and 4 . Riot did something with their mmr brackets and I think it was to crack down on boosting or make more skill distinction im not quite sure. But this season is way F*ed up compared to prior. SO just keep doing what youre doing an dont get too discouraged. Play your best, stay positive. An try to learn and offer help to others where ya can. Youll get into silver or so and start playing against low silver through mid gold opponents and see some increased difficulty at least in the enemy mechanics , build choices etc.

Thanks man, I guess I'll just play my best in placements and continue to win in the low bronze until I get to my goal elo (gold). I just wish I didn't have to deal with the bronze elo all over again lol.

It's kind of weird though, I went into ranked thinking my teammates would be the ones I'd complain about...I never expected it'd be my opponents xD

hate to be bad news here but i won 7 of my placements and was put into bronze 3 and i ended in silver 4 last season so i want to say yes it does have a very big influence for some reason

Damn, that kind of ruins the purpose of doing well in placements doesn't it? :'(

yeah it does but idk what they mostly base it on but thats just what happened to me so you may get a different result

Placements absolutely have an impact. They roughly have the impact of what would be several regular matches. That said, it's like the difference between bronze II and Silver III if you lose most or win most. Since you have a history already (from last season), that plays a large impact.

That said...placements this year have had a really nasty soft reset. I've seen gold IIIs be put in bronze 1 or silver V after going 4/6 or so. Bleh.

While last season's performance plays a role in your initial placement, after that your history is reset. The only thing that matters is how you play moving forward. If you went 100/400 (20% win rate) last season in bronze IV, then do 5/5 and get placed in bronze IV again - you only need several wins to get to bronze III and such. You aren't going to have to "undo" your past losses like you would have to do if you had 500 matches behind your belt already.

tldr; Just play and you'll get where you belong fairly quickly.

Your performance in placements only matters in so far as if it's a win or lose. If you're being positive and playing well enough to get S ranks, then great you'll probably be able to help carry the game to victory, but a victory like that is counted the same as a victory where you fed all game but someone managed to hard carry you.

Ultimately where you're placed depends on your final mmr after placements, and if your mmr is crap from previous season(s), it'll still be pretty crap after placements even if you do well in them. That said, placements influence your mmr a lot more than regular games, so if you go 8-2 your mmr is going to be a lot better off than if you went 2-8, or even 5-5. It can make the difference between needing another 100 games to climb out of bronze, and needing 30 games.

The formula for a fresh account is that you usually have your elo set to mid-silver ish which i think is like 1200 MMR, then (this is unconfirmed as far as i know but makes sense) your first few games have HUGE swings in your MMR, like if you lose your first 2-3 placements your MMR is gonna get dumpstered. The highest you can ever place off placements after a reset is plat 1, so youre not going to be placing any higher even if you win all 10. Then since you ended in bronze 4 with a soft reset its something like your (last season's MMR + 1200 )/2 = this season's seeding MMR, then from there your placements are like a homing missile esque system, first few games move you around by large gaps, later games by smaller gaps, and last games by even smaller gaps. From there your regular games (once placed) will further fine tune your true MMR unless you are consistently improving and moving up.

This information may or may not be wrong, much of the way the system works is guess work to prevent people from finding loops in it the way it works isnt publicly available.
