"Malzahar is a bad champion because his ult can be countered by QSS and he is immobile"

YumaS2Astral··12 votes·2,573 views

item 3140 counters a lot of champions:

Zed (his ult can be removed, so QSS is an option if you are AD) Fizz (removes the fish) Warwick, Skarner, and Urgot (Malzahar is not the only champion with suppression) Nasus (That crippling slow can be removed by QSS - this includes the attack speed slow) Vladimir (the ult) Fiora (the ult as stated by an user on this thread: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/Y2otPTfY-everyone-knows-you-can-qss-fioras-ult-right ) Any CC

As for the immobility... This is a problem for many champions. Viktor for example is immobile and he is one of the most popular mid lane champions, and he doesn't even have that much range. Immobility is not a problem for many champions that are or were popular Darius Chogath Gangplank Mordekaiser Pantheon KogMaw Jinx Jayce Cassiopeia

Honestly, though, I would rather want Malzahar not to become popular. Why? Because if he was popular, he would be nerfed. Just see what happened with Viktor. I want him to continue as he currently is so that I can enjoy him at rankeds, and carry games with him. I know that he is not as bad of a champion as people say that he is. However, it still bothers me that people mock him without even trying to master him.

Very few people think he's bad. He's just got some rather glaring weaknesses than can be exploited in pro play. Outside of the very highest level of play he's very strong.

Yeah, but there is another problem: "He is bad at pro play so he is a bad champion"

People love copying pro play and using them as a reference for everything, but they forget that they are playing Solo Queue. Solo Queue =/= pro play, I am not a pro player to really know if Malzahar is bad there. But Malzahar is strong at SoloQ.

I don't even think that it's that Malzahar would be outright bad in pro play. I just think there are other mids that offer more of what pros are looking for. I'm sure pro teams could use and win games with Malz mid if they wanted to.

Unless they rush QSS. But then, again, QSS delays their powerspike.

Well Viktor, Cassiopeia and Jayce all have better mobility than Malzahar does due to conditional speed boosts. Malzahar is actually very strong as a mid laner because of his ability to not just carry fights or lock down a single target but his voidlings improve his pushing potential and he is capable of doing substantial damage to tanks. The only people who think Malzahar is bad have never played him or don't understand how he fits into the meta.

MalzaharAnyLane8 votes

Malzahar fits into every meta.

He can pretty much play any role adequately, including tank (people are going to panic and converge on you if you ult anyone and your pool guarantees an assist streak)

Need to switch to AD runes because your ADC is a retarded dunce or is Mordekaiser? No problem. You can still solo and ADC better than Quinn. Have a support? Even better, your sustained and burst DPS vastly outstrips the enemy ADC's because you can silence the enemy support long enough for your support to get in. If the enemy support decides to stubbornly hit you, your voidling will continue to DPS while you're CC'd.

Malzahar is a better jungler than most. Voidlings mean he can solo dragon earlier than others with just blue buff and a couple potions, and he can build either Cinderhulk or Runeglaive or Warrior without an issue.

Malzahar is a fine enough support because the silence, pool and ultimate are absolute terror to lane against.

All of Malzahar's opposition that can outshine him has either been nerfed to his level or makes up for it with mobility.

If mobility isn't what you want in a kit, Malzahar's kit and passive pretty much has everything he needs to do whatever the hell he wants.

Banner of Command is more useful on Malzahar than anyone else other than Yorick, and even then.

If you have two voidlings out and ult someone with a full AD built, including a tank, they are going to die.

Also moonwalking.

Malzahar item 3431item 3116 never forget (mobility issue solved)

It is unfortunate that Malzahar suffers from six item slot syndrome (those who play competitive Pokémon know the term "four moveslot syndrome")

I want item 3151 because Malzahar just synergizes incredibly well with this item

I want item 3116 because it gives Malzahar very good kiting potential and has fantastic synergy with Liandry

I want item 3165 because of CDR and Malzahar has mana problems

I want item 3027 because Morellonomicon is not enough to solve Malz' mana problems, plus he needs HP to survive the focus and initial burst

I want item 3157 to survive against some situations, for outplay potential, or for when there is a Zed/Karthus/Fizz on the enemy team

I want item 3089 because well, Malzahar is an APC

I want item 3135 because sometimes Sorcerer's + Liandry does not give enough magicpen against tanks

Unfortunately, there are only six item slots, and Malzahar needs to use boots, so... he can only fit 5 of those items in a single build and it is very hard to decide which ones are the better - Most of time I just use Liandry + RoA + Zhonya + Rabadon + Void Staff. That is the single best item combination on him because it is the one that is more useful most of time.

i have a friend that mains him and runs 35% (+5 mastery) full cdr at lvl18

starts with item 1027 ---> item 3070 completes build with item 3003 item 3151 item 3089item 1311 item 3116 item 3157 spells: summoner 13 summoner 4 goes: E - Q - E - Q - E - R, etc. maxing E first and not getting W until lategame.

you dont get the extra penetration at the beginning, but get mana sustain and more AP at the end

7ha7guy7773 votes

He definitely suffers from wanting more than 6 items. With 800 ap, luden's, and liandry's he can kill most champions with mr less than or equal to his magic pen with just his W and the additional damage from those items. I don't know at what point it no longer kills since W does 85% max hp damage, luden's would do 180, and liandry's would do 4% (assuming rylai's is one of the items) current hp damage for 5 seconds (2% current per tick). Then there are masteries that increase damage. I do know with 0/9/21 masteries, you can kill Azir with 2400 hp with "just" W.

Personally, i prefer a mana pool over mana regen with him. It seems like RoA solves the mana problem better than morello. His cooldowns are so long that cdr is amazing though. Which is a problem. A typical build might be RoA>Rylai's>sorc shoes> deathcap> liandry's>voidstaff (not necessarily in that order). But you give up cdr and zhonya's for it. I feel like malz is in a weird spot where if you go "tanky" you survive longer but you cant get cdr so you only get one rotation off. But if you build cdr, you die so fast you only get one rotation off.

I want to try going CDR glyphs and replacing Ionian Boots with Sorcerer's Shoes by late game once I have both Liandry and Void Staff (thankfully the extra magic pen from Sorcerer's shall not be missed). This would allow me to have 35% CDR thogether with masteries, without the need of using Morello. The only problem is that the lack of magic resistance runes would be a problem against some matchups, such as LeBlanc, against which the MR glyphs are definitively necessary to survive the early game against her.

Yes, but Malzahar is one of those champions that suffer the most with the fact that he can't have more item slots. There are some champions in which 6 slots is sufficient, and even some that you could get rid of one item slot and they would still work.

Don't forget the situational item 3001 and item 3174.

Yeah - Sometimes when I am snowballing really hard and my team is guaranteed to win - then I rush item 3136 for the magic penetration and early powerspike then I build Athene's Unholy Grail for the CDR and because the passive is better for solving mana problems when compared to Morellonomicon.

It is kinda of a "win more" build because building Rod of Ages delays Malzahar's powerspike - but it is still the best overall mana issue solving item for him.

EDIT: I don't usually use item 3001 because Malzahar's spells have higher range than this item's aura. However it is a viable in some situations, for example, against Diana, which will get into melee range against you and does lots of magic damage with her spells.

Hasn't Malzahar had one of the highest win rates of all Mid laners in every elo for a while now? I don't really check champion win rates that much but I typically see Malzahar being one of the highest in solo queue no matter what time I check it.

He's really reliable with his abilities being easy to hit, and his ultimate can shutdown pretty much any carry. "Oh but it suppresses him too!", yeah well who's going to kill me in a teamfight when their only fed carry is CC'ed for the next 2 hours. I'd easily sacrifice my 2-1 Malzahar to kill their 5-0 Fizz.

Malzahar still has the third highest win rate of all mid laners according to lolking, behind only Brand and Lux.

The only reason why Lux's win rate is so high now is because of her recent buffs. Malzahar would probably have the absolute highest win rate if he was buffed too. But he can't be buffed, otherwise there is a risk that he will become broken.

Oh, and Malzahar actually has higher win rate than every Juggernaut except Skarner.

Yes, people unfortunately do that against most champions:

Vayne "weak early game"

Zed "build Zhonya"

Riven "stack armor"

Nasus "deny his farm"

MasterYi "just CC him"

Those are weakness to the aforementioned champions? Yes. However, they either are not even that much of an weakness, or do not completely invalidate the champion and the champion can play around it.

3TWarrior3 votes

fun fact, AP nasus can be completely independent of stacks and function as a mage that clears a wave of minions in one spell while improving his AD teammates function and his own Q damage against an opponent while potentially being tanky as well (depends upon how fed)

yi has to be counterjungled or have an entire team of crowd control against him if he goes sated devourer...which every yi does now

riven: stacking armor essentially says to the opposing mages, hey, chunk 50% of my HP

zed: well, everyone can use zhonyas...but it reduces your offense typically and also requires you to be adept at using the item's active on a champion you might not be familiar with using it

Vayne...I don't know what to say...i've been disconnected from too many games lately to play against one

Cause its true lol.

No.

Malzahar is much more than a simple suppression bot.

If an enemy has QSS, you can bait it by taking advantage of your allies' CC. That's why Malzahar pairs so well with champions that have CC such as Leona, Maokai, Sejuani, Amumu, Taric, and even Warwick (Malzahar is known as a tank counter, and he actually works incredibly well with tanks as his allies) - Alternatively, you can use Nether Grasp as a means of peeling an enemy off your teammates. This is because tanks and bruisers rarely buy QSS as it is not an slot efficient item for them, especially if they are AP.

His Q and his pool can be used to poke the enemy. His Q and his W are Malzahar's big AoE spells to use during a teamfight. Malefic Visions give Malzahar insane pushing power, with his passive allowing him to push and take down towers very quickly, allowing him to counter roaming attempts. Also, it allows Malzahar to work as a siege champion late game.

Malzahar's pool can also be used to take objectives due to it doing damage based on the enemy's max health. This allows Malzahar to take objectives (Dragon, Baron) fairly easy thogether with his jungler.

Malzahar can also deal high amounts of damage to a single target, so even though he may not be able to directly kill them due to them purchasing QSS, Malzahar can soft targets, so that his teammates can finish the job.

Overall, he has weakness that can be exploited; QSS is still a counter to him, he is vulnerable to ganks, easy to focus, has no mobility, and is somewhat easy to shut down and be rendered useless during mid game. However, QSS is not a complete counter to him.

The Bíg Ticket2 votes

I main Malzahar, you don't need to tell me how he works. It is a fact that QSS removes 3 of his 4 abilities which completely destroy his 1v1 advantage. I know Malzahar is a good champion, I played him in high Plat but the fact that QSS counters him is true. If the enemy laner rushes QSS against you, you lose lane.

I know Malzahar is a good champion, I played him in high Plat but the fact that QSS counters him is true. If the enemy laner rushes QSS against you, you lose lane.

If they rush QSS against me, that means they are not rushing an important core item.

For example:

If Yasuo rushes QSS, this means that he is not rushing item 3087, even if he builds this a second item, his powerspike will be delayed. He can build this after, but then it is not lane phase anymore and Malzahar can take advantage of this to snowball his team and carry.

Same for AD assassins such as Zed and Talon.

Also, if you are an AP champion and you are rushing this, you are delaying your powerspike even further because most AP champions need to purchase item 3165 / item 3174 to solve their mana problems. Also, at mid or late game, you have only 2 choices: Either you sell this (because QSS is an incredibly slot inneficient item for any AP champion outside of countering Malz' ult) or you keep this item that is taking an slot that could be used for a better overall item, such as item 3285 or item 3151. This is because QSS has no AP itself and does not upgrade into any AP items.

3TWarrior3 votes

I have to agree with this so hard...

imagine an ADC against a malzahar when all they've done is rush QSS...they'd do no damage, crit 1/X times(crit runes) (though that's one of yasuo's strengths)

so long as he isn't dead, no one outduels malzahar

That's what I want to say.

You would need to have great base damage, no mana issues, and be an AD champion to be able to rush QSS against Malzahar without running into powerspike issues.

Unfortunately, assassins and ADCs tend to have poor base damages, so rushing QSS, while an option for them, will delay their powerspike by a lot, making them weaker during the early/mid game despite them now being able to survive against Malz.

That's why I like to use Malzahar against Jayce, for example. Jayce can't rush QSS against Malzahar because he has to rush Tear and at least one AD item. I can take advantage of this to snowball, and even at late game, Jayce is very, very squishy. He will melt to Malz' spells, although now he can use QSS to survive against Malz' ult.

I don't like to use summoner 14 on Malzahar. Yes, he has enough range to use it to its full potential and Ignite is really good for ensuring kills. However, I've started to use summoner 21 instead due to it giving much more safety. Malzahar is likely to be focused or to be ganked a lot, and Barrier has saved my life so many times that it is not even funny. So on my opinion, Barrier is overall a better option. I use Barrier instead of summoner 7 because Ignite reduces Heal's effectiveness and I am a lot more likely to face an opponent with Ignite at mid lane - also, Heals don't stack and my ADC will already have Heal. I still use Heal if I am sure that I will face an opponent that does not commonly use Ignite, for example, Karthus and Xerath.

I still use Ignite sometimes, however - mainly against opponents that rely on sustain, for example, against Swain you are required to use Ignite against him due to his ult. Without Ignite you lose trades due to his insane healing. Ignite is also required against Vladimir again due to his healing, with Ignite you have a lot of dueling potential against Vlad. Also good if there is a Volibear or DrMundo on the enemy team. You have to take into account a lot of factors, though - Do your allies plan to use Ignite? Are there any dangerous assassins on the enemy team?

Other options that I've tested are summoner 6 and summoner 3 - All of them are viable, but overall, Barrier is the best summoner spell for Malzahar. That's my opinion.

3TWarrior1 votes

overall though, the kill lead seems much more valuable than surviving one encounter that they would burn their own ignite on

W and Q are usually more than enough to deter players from getting in malzahar's face and if he's anywhere but on the middle lines, he's not where he's supposed to be

yet it's a funny thing that they won't gut any of the other champions that are almost guaranteed to 100-0 more than one champion at a time, like zed

for zed, you either have to build an item that will likely have no synergy with your kit...or, you watch helplessly as he triple shuriken slashes you in iliterally 1 second (for the people who like button mashers)

and then there's fizz...he completely negates skillshots with his playful trickster and deletes anyone not named Sion, Gragas or Shyvana(who now plays as an assassin, just like udyr and yi...)

yet clearly, Janna is the problem with gameplay.

Champions that remove all the fun of gameplay because you're dead before you can do anything to them? nope, they're fun...

champions that counter those champions and actually put strategy and fun back in the game? screw that, we want people to buy the expensive champs!

I main Malzahar, you don't need to tell me how he works. It is a fact that QSS removes 3 of his 4 abilities which completely destroy his 1v1 advantage. I know Malzahar is a good champion, I played him in high Plat but the fact that QSS counters him is true. If the enemy laner rushes QSS against you, you lose lane.

thats a bit of an exaggeration, item 3140 has 90 sec cooldown, while his abilities way less, even less with CDR, the main issue is his ult, which lategame with CDR can be spammed

Malzahar main here. QSS pretty much destroys him. Good thing he can still do a bunch of damage with his Q and E (and his w if you and your team can keep him there). He's just alot better in lower ELO solo queue where nobody knows what QSS is. Another nice thing that you could do is ult somebody with QSS, force them to burn it, then have like and Amumu or Sejauni be able to get a 5 man ult (or the other way around they burn the QSS for you with their ults while you lock down one of them).

...Isn't this a Non-Sequitur?

I think it's some form of logical fallacy.
