Dmg Reduction vs True Damage

Slythion··2 votes·6,619 views

I'm aware the True Damage ignores resistances such as Armour and Magic Resist but how does it interact with Damage Reduction?

For example:

Ahri Q (true damage return) vs Malz Passive

yes, this is the situation that got me thinking about this topic lol

Edit: Thank you for all the responses guys [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

True damage ignores armor, magic resist, damage reduction, and your feelings.

If my ability does 500 true dmg. that's how much it will do to an Alistar that has ulted.

Which provided damage reduction.

I'm not sure specifically about Malzahar's passive, but I know that Exhaust's damage reduction (which is a debuff applied to the damage dealer, as opposed to a buff on the target) is applied even to true damage. As I understand it, though, "true damage" just means damage applied disregarding resistances, so any damage reduction effect outside armor/magic resistance would apply. This seems to be the case with Alistar's ult in my experience, anyway.

No you are in fact wrong.

True damage CANNOT be mitigated.

Hrm... alright, then. Consider me schooled, I suppose.

Didn't mean to be a dick...but you just seemed so confident in your response....lol

I'm Canadian and meant no hard feelings lol

LMAO

No offense taken, and I wasn't as confident as you seem to have perceived. I've just never noticed any significant burst against me when I ult as Alistar that makes me think, "Wait, that wasn't supposed to happen!" Also, sometimes when I think of true damage I think of a champion with sufficient penetration to effectively deal "true damage" with their normal abilities. I started playing when there were ~~only two or three ~~ very few abilities in the game that dealt actual true damage.

Darius, Ahri, Vel'Koz, Vayne, Garen, Fiora, Gangplank, Irelia, Master Yi, Twitch, Cho'Gath, Cog'Maw, Olaf, Rek'Sai, Anyone using Skirmisher's Saber, Red buff, Ignite

From the wiki: True damage is unaffected by damage reductions such as Exhaust.png Exhaust. True damage is not amplified by the mastery Executioner mastery s4.png Executioner.

Ahri's return damage wasn't true damage when I started, nor did Garen, Fiora, Gangplank, Master Yi, or Kog"Maw deal true damage back then. Vel'koz, Rek'sai, and Skirmisher's Saber didn't even exist. The others (Darius, Vayne, Irelia, Twitch, Cho'Gath, Olaf, Red buff, and Ignite) were all present doing true damage in Season 2 when I started, though I was hardly knowledgeable about the game until mid-Season 3 at best.

And apparently I still have things to learn, as proven in this thread.

Good call.

True Damage is indicated as such.

I think even if you Pen into the negative numbers in mr/armor the amount of dmg you do is NOT considered "True Damage".

Because Exhaust WOULD reduce that dmg.

EX: 50 MR target- 35% (Void Staff) - 15 flat Sorc Shoes and 20 flat Abyssal. This would leave the target with -2.5 MR. Would technically be considered doing unmitigated dmg.

Where "True Damage" has it's own classification.

Hope that clarifies things a bit more.

I hope you watched PTL this week. If not, you definitely should.

damage reduction does not affect true damage by any manner. rip

Ahris true dmg on the way back would deal the exact amount that the tooltip says.

unless the Wiki is wrong lol

True damage ignores all damage reductions and increases aside from their basic scaling.

Things like Maok ult, Malz Passive, and Garen W do not mitigate true damage, and abilities/masteries such as Swain's E and the +2% ability damage mastery do not increase true damage dealt.
