Can we pretend that the Cassio rework never happened and put her back on the list?

SaltyToplaneGoat··93 votes·4,379 views

Because right now she's even more out-of-sync with here theme and the lore than she was before, a massive waste of potential and the result if someone reworks as champion who had obviously zero motivation when doing this job (seriously? A passively stacking gameplay mechanic for stats? HOW LAZY CAN YOU GET?!). I wonder where in her lore Stashu has read that she was a "giant-fang-gatling-gun" - or if he even HAS read the lore or if he approached that rework from a gameplay only perspective (which, as we are reminded just recently, is a horrible thing to do). You want to know why the Sion rework was awesome? Or why GP and Fiora are good too? They looked at the themes and the lore and started working from that point, so their kits feel just natural.

But let's forget about that for a second and think about what kind of champ Cassy should be instead of a automatic-fang-gun. She should be one of league's unique poision users - and yes the poision playstyle CAN be healthy for league, if someone would think outside of the boundaries of "Poision=DoT". You don't have to use damage to have a poision mechanic. A slow, stats going down, vision fade, eventually a charm mechanic (yes seriously. Poision an enemy with X poision for X seconds and then they become charmed and slowly walk towards you. That would even work), and probably many things more you can do with over-time mechanics...

I did some thinking and thought of a kit that would suit a true poision user while also trying to keep her identity as a champion (turning people into stone, AoE , a bit skill spammy, etc.)

Passive: Poision Affinity

All poisions stack on the enemy. They stack faster the more different types on posion there are on the target. Cassiopaia gains movement speed around poisioned enemies, increased after a certain minimum of total stacks on target and when moving towards them. Stacks slowly decrease when not hit by a poision for X second.

Basic attacks do not apply poision, but reset the time until the stacks start decreasing.

Q: Neurotoxic Blast: Projectile Skillshot, small AoE on impact, deals damage and applies neurotoxin, lowering the target's vision with every stack. At over X% maximal stacks, their minimap is disabled and they no longer share vision with teammates. Hitting an enemy with that that is already suffering from another poision refunds X% of this abilities cooldown.

W: Petrification Poision: Breaths out a cloud of poision that slowly moves towards a certain direction. This poision damages and slows. The more stacks there are on the target, the stronger it slows. At over 50% of maximum stacks, attack speed is also affected. At maximum stacks the enemy is turned into stone for 2 seconds.

E: Acid Pool: Creates a constantly growing zone of AoE damage that applies corrosive poision: The longer enemies stand on it, the more they lose armor and resistance. Also they are damaged as long as they are standing on it.

R: Noxian Gratitude: This skill requires a minimum of X poision stacks on the enemy to be used. Point&Click, Cassiopaia coils around an enemy and roots them for one second before stabbing the brutally with a dagger, removing poision stacks and dealing massive damage, depeding on how many stacks were removed.

This is set around an Mage/Assassin playstyle that might not excel that much in teamfights, but is brutally strong when you lure enemies into your trap, getting your stacks up on them from all posions at once before brutally murdering them in good old Noxus Style. Ya know what i mean, she did that same thing with Sivir...

Why I thought a melee ult would be a good idea? It's a bait. A bait for players who like to take a risk by getting close to an enemy despite their squishyness. They can get killed while doing this, but if they make it work the reward is some sweet sweet damage (and most likely a kill). Also her kit could need some risky elements as all her range and AoE can make her into a zoning monster.

Also like the we can see her actually using her snake body to fight (or better "to kill") instead of just moving around with it. Right now Cass could have legs, it would make no difference to her playstyle. Sure, would appear weird as hell at first, but nothing on her kit would be influenced by that - and that's a design flaw I cannot tolerate. If you create a character with a snake body, at least let them use that...

I'm not saying that my version her is perfect or anything and I'm sure a lot of people have some ideas or criticism for it, but even on paper THIS sounds more like Cassiopaia than Cass is ingame right now...

I like your concept a lot, it's definitely better than what Stashu did put out. I also like how you implemented her snaketail as part of her kit, coiling around an enemy always was a gameplay fantasy of mine regarding snake-champions.

It only makes sense to allow Cass an actual use for it, otherwise it'd be completely redundant. A snake's tail has insane muscle power, to simply pass up on that would be a huge waste.

SaltyToplaneGoat2 votes

Glad you like it :D If you have any suggestions for the poisions and stuff, please let me know ^^

Well, it's not really hard to deliver something better than Stashu did with this. Well, I think it's only natural for her to use her tail somehow and this seems like the only logical move what would go along with her theme - actually it goes along with her theme just fine as that's pretty much her personality poisioning her enemies with sweet words, gold or actual poision before sinking her fangs (or dagger) into them.

That snake curse she brough upon herself was quite an irony in itself I guess...

Keep up the good work pal, sooner or later they'll have to listen to us. The current situation is hardly any different from when the rework first came out, with the same lack of replies from Riot's side and a general dissatisfaction for the theme they have chosen. A good year later and they still haven't really learned their lesson when it comes to listening to their playerbase, or so it seems.

I also remember your first version of this kit from my previous thread, since then I've made a couple more but so far no red response, sadly. Seeing Meddler show up today has sparked some hope, though. I just hope he get to see the message I've prepared for him.

SaltyToplaneGoat2 votes

Sadly it's really hard to find old cassio mains on the boards... could you do me a favor and link my thread on your thread? Would help I guess... Let's just keep posting over and over again, at some point they will have to answer.

Well, I'm trying to get into game design (currently bachelor student), so in my free time I keep my mind busy with possible champion reworks and concepts. I even made one about Galio at some point that was very well recieved. it's somewhere buried in Skin&Champion Concepts I guess... Sadly I never get a red response to it Q_Q

The problem is that Riot is in that regard a typical case - they rather die than admitting that they made mistakes. What's so hard about just saying: "ok, we fucked up, we give it another try, so now stop bothering us as we work on it." - literally nothing.

1 800 MID LANE1 votes

I like it, also. Even being a Cassi main with no experience pre-rework. It sounds cool. The ADC-style gameplay is definitely kinda boring as a midlaner. Strong as all hell, but boring.

EDIT: Especially because of her range. She really can't afford to build very defensive because if she does, she's gunna do jack-shit late if she can't get enough gold after laning. Not to mention that she really can't be at a "safe" distance like most ADCs.

tl;dr She's deadly, but easy to get focused without constant peeling. (Kinda hard to peel without voice.)

+1 for poison cass

but I cannot condone the removal of Petrifying Gaze! (Mythic ult user)

I really thought a lot about that, but the Medusa-thing does simply not roll with her identity and theme. But I made sure you still can turn people into stone, so that's at least something...

I think with 3 AoE poison abilities you are too reliant on skill shots. too much safe zone control and not to mention visuals... How are you going to make 3 different poisons work? Can you go into detail on how the poisons would stack? because stacking DoTs can be a really messy thing.

I definitely think there are some fun parts in there, but I would suggest changes akin to Nidalee's playstyle but then with slower poisons rather than a burst-pattern. Her Q and W providing poison and utility and her E a dash-in akin to Quinn's E. I like the passive more than the current one (not hard) and I also like the Ult, so ima work with that.

(this isnt "i think this is better", I just want to get in on the discussion).

  • Passive: Poison Affinity (cant come up with sometihng better so ill just copy pasta :p)

All Cassiopeia's basic abilities apply poison damage over time (3s), stacking up to three times, with additional poison applications refreshing the duration. Cassiopeia gains 20 movement speed towards poisoned enemies for each stack.

  • Q: Noxious Blast

Cassiopeia hurls poison at the target area which strikes after 0.4s delay, all enemies within the area are poisoned (1 poison stack).

Each champion hit by Noxious Blast reduces its cooldown by 1s (upto 3s)

  • W: Miasma Cloud

Creates a Slow moving Miasma Cloud down the target path.

Enemies entering the Miasma Cloud are infected by Miasma, reducing magic resist, applying a poison stack and emanating Miasma Cloud around them for 3 seconds, the Miasma Cloud and poison stack duration refreshes while remaining in a cloud that's not your own (upto 9 seconds total).

Miasma Cloud grants vision for its duration.

  • E: Toxic Fangs

range: 700/300 Cassiopeia strikes with her fangs with blinding speed, dashing towards her enemy and then leaping back off them, dealing instant damage, applying 1 poison stack and infecting them with NeuroToxin.

NeuroToxin works slowly, initially slowing for 10%, but ramping up to 60% over 3 seconds and then Petrifying (stun) the target for 1 second.

Cassiopeia can leap towards a petrified target again, dealing double instant damage (but not applying a Poison Stack or NeuroToxin).

  • Ult: Final Embrace

Range: 900 Cassiopeia ignores unit collision as she slithers towards and coils around her target for 3 seconds. Dealing damage over time while making her and her victim untargettable for the duration.

All poison stacks applied at the start of her ult will continue to tick and if the target is below 50% HP the full damage of all active poison stacks is instantly reapplied at the end of the constriction.

Cassiopeia can re-activate her ult to end the constriction early. (forsaking extra DoT damage for instant damage from her poisons and removing the stasis on herself and her target)

There's alot of** terror** in these abilities that revolve around being poisoned, infected and hunted.

  • Being poisoned feels increasingly threatening (think Vayne's ult/passive) because with each stack Cass will hunt you down faster and faster.
  • Her Q is simple, basic poison application. It rewards precision by lowering its cooldown, this is your main way of applying poison, W and E should be reserved respectively for zone/vision control and teamfights, and trading (1 leap) or executing (2nd leap)
  • Her Miasma Cloud I think would be really cool, it basically gives the dread of an infectious disease, if handled right (avoided/quarantined) it's a dud, but in the right circumstances it can poison the entire enemy team for maximum stacks and full magic shred!
  • Her Toxic Fangs is her (non-ult)** finishing move**, and the only ability that has instant damage, but it puts her in harms way. The fantasy here is of a slow-working toxin, giving the prey a false sense of relief (relatively low instant damage) and thinking they got away, only to be petrified and executed a few seconds later, the trade-off is smart prey will quickly go to safety (allies/turret) or just kill you before getting petrified.
  • Her ult instills the terror of getting choked out, stuck in a mortal embrace with your allies and yourself watching in helpless terror as you slowly feel the life going out of you.
  • Smart plays can be made by E'ing the front line, Ulting the squishy back line and then E'ing back out to the petrified front line.

Tell my what you guys think (im having no illusions Riot will read any of our posts, just for fun)

Lmao it's Cassiopeia bud. She ain't no papaya half-breed Cassiopaia haha.

As for the things you suggested, really I would rather her kit stay the same but her identity return to being a poisin mage rather than the fang mage thing she's got going on. Honestly, Stashu's passive would probably work thematically... if all the upgrades weren't directed solely at her E.

All the damage on E needs to be taken off and put on Q/W.

SaltyToplaneGoat2 votes

The problem is that just reverting the rework is not a real choice. She WAS reworked for a reason actually, people tend to forget that. massive ranged zoning and before one poision was even done ticking down you got the next one into your face. The only way to beat that was to play high range champs, but then Cass was almost useless.

Not that the rework fixed anything apart from toning down her laning brutally and shoving everything she has on power into the lategame... but not in a good way...

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

Completely agree that previous Cass was a little... toxic (ba-dum-tss). What I meant though is that you can keep the focus on poisin whilst still applying the reworks reworked effects. There were several additions that could already act as limiters to her safe long range poking ability.

  • Twin Fang amplifying poison damage on target -- This literally lets you reduce the Q and W damages in lieu of her E increasing it.

  • Aspect of the Serpent -- Both the heal on E and amplified AP are great balancing tools. They make her less reliant on dealing enough damage to deter counter-poke during laning like she was previously (and currently is actually) and more about sustaining herself to outlive her opponent and stack her passive on them so later in the game she can reach a point similar to or more powerful than her previous iteration.

Somewhere along the line they placed far too much power in her E and thought it was "fun" and "innovative" and stuck with it instead of staying true to her poison mage theme. They definitely created enough levers to modify her lane bullying power into more utility while granting her delayed access to that power as the game progresses. And with the damage amp on E they never would need to fully restore her previous power level since they implemented this risk/reward system of having to land E to truly tap into her full poison potential.

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

While those things might work great in term of balance, in terms of design they are just plain lazy. Just throwing pure stats on a character until it fits is not really something that speaks "good design" to me, especially since those stats in specific have nothing to do with her theme.

I mean, look at Vlad, who also gets stats from his passive. He's a blood mage, a life-essence-manipulator, so it just makes sense that he utilizes hitpoints somehow. Cassio on the other hand is not really tied to cooldown reduction or to a free deathcap, and the heal on E on 100 stacks just feels completly unnatural, as if it only exists for the sake of balance.

If you need such unnatural feeling "shackles" on a character to make them work you have failed as a designer. Just take a look at Viktor and Kha'Zix for example: when they unlock new parts of their kit it feels completly natural: upgrading your tech or evolving your body are both things that work with their theme and just feel natural ingame. Cassio's current passive is just a super lame and uninspired version of that.

Blue Kaozi4 votes

Honestly, I kind of like the DPS spam e style kit that new cass has, but I have to admit this kit is MUCH better thematically. As far as balance goes it would really depend on how easy it was to get max stacks.

Nefas3 votes

I love your concepts. Multiple types of poison on Cass is something I've thought about a lot and agree that they could interact in a lot of fun ways. Plus it all builds on DoT!

I also really like that you got rid of her current ult. I really think it holds her kit back (sorry Mythic users)

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

Well, I thought about that a lot. For one, the whole medusa-thing does not fit here lore. That's just something they added back then when they thought "oh snake champ uhhh.... MEDUSA ABILITY!".

But on the other hand people KNOW her for turning people into stone, so I moved that to the slowing/stunning poison and called it petrification. Now you can still turn people to stone AOE style, but now you don't have some weird teamfight ult eating up your power budget. Personality wise she's not that much of a team player anyways...

Nefas2 votes

Fully agree that the ult feels very tacked on. I also don't think that it will ever feel good. People complain about not being able to hit people with it at close range - there's really nothing that can be done about how cones are and it doesn't make sense to not be a cone.

Making Petrification feel noticeably different from Viktor W might take a bit of work but I think overall you have really strong ideas and abilities here that would make a great kit.

MrWasjig3 votes

This has a lot of interesting ideas and is certainly unique. There's plenty to play around with. It would most definitely give Cassio a more unique identity and feel in terms of gameplay. While I personally like Cassio's current state I'm not above agreeing that it's...just off. While poison spammy spammy is fun it really doesn't fit her thematically.

+1'd Some great ideas here for sure :D

Catastrop3 votes

Now this, is reason for me to buy her again. Seriously this needs more upvotes so that Riot can see it.

Auryiel3 votes

Can we just revert it already and only keep the E poison detection and R close up stun improvements? lol

Her old kit was not perfect, but it's way better than this pile of shit we've been left with.

SaltyToplaneGoat2 votes

But why take a step backwards when we could also make a huge leap forwards instead? ^^ But you are right. even when you would revert the rework she would be in a better state than she is now...

Auryiel3 votes

No offense, but I highly dislike your proposed changes.

I agree that Cass needs changes, but I do not see the reason why she should be transformed into an assassin. I understand your reasoning and while I do agree that not using her tail for anything gameplay wise is a loss, it is still a minor loss IMO.

I think Cass should be re-oriented as a medium (I say medium here when compared to short ranged Mages like Ryze, Malzahar or Swain and long ranged ones like Xerath and Ziggs) poke mage who has the OPTION of transitioning mid fight into a short range dps machine. I really liked old Cass because you had OPTIONS. I feel like the changes you propose are just as bad in forcing her to do only one thing. Either her ult damage is so overwhelming that it's her only real tool or her poison damage is so high that she'll almost never have a reason to use her ult in the first place.

SaltyToplaneGoat2 votes

The problem is that ranged-poke champions can cause quite some frustration. Ya remember pre rework nidalee? She never had a single reason to EVER come into a range where you could actually kill her. I wanted to avoid that problem with Cassio, but not by butchering her range or anything, but simply by giving her a powerful tool that baits her to come closer.

Also, I don't see how you can take the waste of something that's like half her identity as "minor loss". When I say Cass people think about 1.)Snake Body 2.) Poision and 3.) Turning people into stone. All these three parts should be integral to her abilities...

Auryiel1 votes

Her appearance is just that, an appearance.

I'm kinda sick of this whole trend of ''visuals absolutely need to match 100% what the kit does''. That's fine for newer champions, but what about the identity that has been built over the years? Is that worth nothing? Should Shen be transformed into an assassin because he looks like a ninja? Fuck no.

If we talk about Cass, sure her appearance comes to mind, but I doubt it's something people associate as part of her identity. Her appearance is a curse. That's the important part of it, not the fact that it's a snake body, but the fact that she has been deformed, she lost her beauty and is now a social pariah, she has been transformed into the opposite of what she once was. But she DID gain new abilities in exchange. IMO that's what important about her. That and well the whole seductress, manipulative bitch side of her that was butchered during her rework. As far as gameplay goes, I'm sure people used to see her as a poison mage and now people see her as a dps mage. Nothing says assassin about her and completely changing her role for the sake of aesthetics seems downright weird to me.

Also, as far as poke champions causing frustration, tbh I do not see how you could even compare Cass to Nidalee. Nid has even more range on her Q, has great mobility and a heal to counter other people's poke. Meanwhile, Cass would have poke with less range than dedicated poke mages like Xerath an Ziggs, no mobility outside of her Q ms and no built in sustain.

The real problem old Cass' kit presented was the fact that in lane, she could poke you all day long with the immediate threat of going all in and shitting all over you if you commit because of her higher dps. I do believe there are solutions to this problem. My main concern in reworking Cassiopeia would be to give her back this feeling of being an opportunist who whittles down her enemies until they are so weakened that she can just go in and sink her fangs in them. She WOULD have a good reason to go in, but she'd have to be smart about it and, depending on the situation, she could simply choose not to do it because she'd have the OPTION. Anyway, that's pretty much my line of thought on Cass.

SaltyToplaneGoat2 votes

And an unusual appearance with no functions is pretty much useless in terms of design. Either stuff works together or it does not - the later is usually called "bad design". You mention it being a curse, but the curse itself never impacts the game, as well as her seductiveness and scheming that ALSO never comes through with her current kit. She's just a generic ability spammer without personality in her theme.

Her curse, her appearance, all that is just some secondary information that holds zero relevance to actual gameplay - you know, the stuff the player actually experiences when playing a champion. If that is integral to a champions identity but it does not come through directly to the kit you have failed as a designer.

Also, not all Ninja's are assassins. Most of them were spies and bodyguards actually, the later epscially the niche Shen is supposed to fill (although he could use some small rework for that to come through more).

this feeling of being an opportunist who whittles down her enemies until they are so weakened that she can just go in and sink her fangs in them. She WOULD have a good reason to go in, but she'd have to be smart about it

This is pretty much what I am trying to achieve with this concept. Wear them down with poisions, the pick the right moment to go in and finish them off.

Auryiel2 votes

IMO a chamion's personnality should matter in how they play. It would make no sense whatsoever to have someone as caring as Soraka be all about damage. It makes sense for Jinx to be a very volatile champion because it reflects who she is. Having gameplay and personnality fit together is a HUGE plus for the overall champion experience. IMO Cass' kit conveys enough that she is a snake with the way she both uses poisons and fangs. Plus, let's not forget that above being a snake, she's supposed to be similar to Medusa, hence her ultimate.

I just think that Cass really does not need to be transformed so extremely when historically she has always been about staying at range and kiting her opponents. Her jumping on people like that feels extremely strange to me and the fact that it's partly based on the new, shitty lore really bugs me.

SaltyToplaneGoat2 votes

She would be still kiting and using her poision at range. Also the R is not a gapcloser and a melee move, so she would not "jump on people". She waits until the poison has taken effect, slithers close, stops her target from getting away and murders them brutally. This is pretty much what her personality is about. That's at least better than spamming some weird magic skill...

I have one, no two, questions.

First, could you switch her w and e? The E you describe sounds much more similar to how her w is so having them both be in the same slot makes more sense to me.

Second, would her poison still have interaction with the poison of other champions? Also, what kind of numbers in terms of mana would you think should be put on her? With that kind of potential utility I could see people taking her bot lane as a support (Which would actually fit her lore if you think about it, she'd go support for the start and then build AP items so it'd be like how she used Sivir and then betrayed her later to get the prize for herself... could even have a Sivir/Cass bot lane to make it even more perfect).

Iunno I'd like her ult to stay the same but with a change with the coil, that being summat like

Any enemy champion within X range (lets say 200) gets wrapped up by cass (Done during initial channel) and get stunned (cause she FORCES them to look at her with the tail grab) and Stuns them for 2.75/3.50/4.25 (ok those numbers can sure as hell be tweaked) This gives Cass some hard CC AND it makes for a much better defensive ult since normally those who go point blank quickly turn around or flash behind her to avoid the stun

gg git diff2 votes

I’m not so sure about the idea of the poison-assassin-mage and think that maybe dropping the assassin idea would be nice, but I think the ult is a really cool idea. Also, credit where credit is due for her rework, her VU was really good.

SaltyToplaneGoat1 votes

Well, I think there might be some misunderstanding in what I mean when I say assassin. People think just about oneshotters or team-murderers like Kat or Zed, but when I say assassin I mean that she she will be good at picking of single, defenseless targets - logically those who have been suffering from her three poisions. Her "main class" would be still that of a mage I guess...

Sounds like Serqet from Smite, but hey! Serqet is a snake poison mage lady that's actually fun to play.
Even Medusa, who has most of Cassiopeia's kit, is fun to play because on her it makes sense.

Fluppets2 votes

Wow, I just checked their wiki pages, Medusa and Serqet are both exactly what they should be.

Its very obvious if you look at their god reveal videos to see this double identity in Cassiopeia, Medusa is obviously from greek and Serqet from Egyptian mythology. Cassiopeia has both mythologies and this divide reflects in the opposing gameplay fantasies players have with her aswell as the balance problems with her kit, it all revolves around this schyzophrenic identity crisis she has.

It is just uncanny to read these two champions (gods in Smite) and just how much their kits, fantasy and (on paper) their gameplay is in sync. This seriously makes me want to play this game, just for these two Champs/gods.

If Cassiopeia should be back for a rework, she should be split into two champions: One the Medusa poison mage; providing aoe damage and control with her poisons and ult and the other a seductive single-target poison mage/assasin.

thanks for pointing this out, very interesting.

It's different than League since everything, even your auto attacks, are skill shots and the placement of the camera. If you can get used to that though, it's a pretty fun game. Personally I think it's better presented and more rewarding than League has been for the last year or so. Plus you get to be a freaking God and Hou Yi's ult is fantastic.

Fluppets1 votes

How is the leveling and acquiring gods? Bc right now i just want to play these two champions to check them out.

Purodyuusaa1 votes

You need to be lv 30 and have some God mastery in order to play ranked. This means newly released gods won't ruin your ranked games right away.

There are several game modes: tri lane, 3v3, 4v4, aram, all out slugfest, and a rotating match of the day which includes an Urf like game. The ingame goodwill system matches you with people with similar goodwill. If you leave too often or get reported a lot, you'll have less goodwill and be matched with more toxic people. If you stay and work as a team, you'll have more goodwill and be matched with better (or at least nicer) players. There is no all chat.

The $30 god pack will buy you EVERY god, current AND future. There's a lot of optional stuff to buy like load borders, voice and announcer packs, obviously skins, player icons including gods and country flags, etc. Recolors (Chromas) are bought with favor (ip).

There are no runes and masteries to worry about and summoner spells are bought in game as needed. Need flash? Buy it. Ghost isn't useful anymore and you'd rather have cleanse? Sell ghost and buy cleanse.

There's also a HUD editor and the custom game mode let's you choose your starting level, whether minions spawn, and what your starting gold is. It's more than what you asked for, but Smite has a lot of nifty features worth mentioning. Make sure you take advantage of their four free offers by liking their Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and Instagram for four free Gods and skins.

From what I remember they just said something about "we might look at her... at some time... if we feel like it... and when pigs can fly then we LOOK at her and maybe, maybe we make some changes". Of course she does not need a full-scale relaunch. This is really just gameplay and a few new ability visuals/sounds, even below the Fiora Update I guess...

Nah, reworking into a generally more healthy champion with a kit that fits better to her lore and theme.

In some regards she would be stronger, but on the other hand she could not murder you straight up with shooting Fangs at you, so in terms of direct kill power it would be a nerf.

The Queen Viper1 votes

Even though we would want some changes to Cass ... there's no point to create a totally different kit which is completely different from what she currently is, WHEN they can just create a new champion instead.

And turning Cass into some "AoE Talon / Diana" is not really a good idea to be honest.

SaltyToplaneGoat2 votes
