Double Doran's

So I've seen that it's common for mid lane mages (especially Annie) to have two of item 1056 during the early game. Why would you buy this when the passive won't stack? Is it simply for mana regen?

It just seems like a waste of gold to me when you could start building towards something like item 3285 instead.

EDIT: Thanks for the info everyone! Makes more sense now.

Dorans items are super gold efficient (its the tradeoff for not building anything later on) so buying an extra doran when behind (or when you feel youre opponent has a major powerspike coming up) helps you keep up with them

The Passive does stack. Plus Doran's Ring is the only item available to all Mages that provides direct % Mana Regeneration.

Actually the passive DOES stack.

PS. item 3285 is a really mediocre item.

Everything on Doran's Ring stacks, including the passive.

Nothing on it is unique.

2 or 3 rings is enough to keep you on or above par with your enemy since other mana regen items were gutted or outright removed. Stacking them has basically replaced mana potions and has proven more gold efficient in fact.
