Jungle EXP really needs to be revisited

Yenn··39 votes·13,271 views

In a 'normal' game where both junglers are split 50/50 between ganking and farming with one kill each, the solo lanes will reach level 6 while the junglers are still level 4.

Being two levels down and and at a level 6 disadvantage makes it impossible to gank. You'll just die in the process. Because you can't gank, you can't catch up, thanks to the jungle EXP changes. You're stuck farming your jungle while falling even further behind and hoping some misplay like a bad dive falls into your lap, until you finally hit 6 and bridge the ult gap. Except now the solo lanes are level 8, you're still pretty far behind, and god help you if the solo lanes decide they want to invade your jungle.

Basically, chain ganking from level 2 on is now the only way to keep up. If you're in a game where you can't gank (i.e. because all of your lanes are constantly hard pushing), you're completely out of luck, because farming your jungle isn't sufficient. You also don't just need a couple of successful ganks, you need a lot of them, since the EXP you get from pushing the wave after ganking is also further decreased by the pre-season changes.

This change was terrible and is just going to further push hyper aggressive junglers to the top of the meta, which in turn makes the role even less desirable than it already was. Nobody likes this. This really needs to be adjusted so that you aren't so far behind at all points of the game.

p.s. the gromp change is also a mess. Bottom side now has a major advantage, because they don't have to do krugs, which allows them to immediately invade top side after red. If the invasion is caught or doesn't work out, they can just retreat and still get 3 off of gromp + blue. This used to be extremely risky, because you would be stuck at level 2 after gromp + blue.

Yup. Just going to be another season to top lane shitting on every other role from every angle possible while still crying they are weak.

Z3SIeeper2 votes

??? Why would they cry when they're finally equally as important as other roles?

Ofcourse except mid lane, mid lane has far more priority over top, given they gain the same exp while having full map access. And that's totally okay, mid should be the most important lane given their position on the map (literally the center of the action).

This is how the game should be imo.

Top is an early solo carry/semi-immovable wall. Mid is an early solo carry and roam terror. Bot is a duo teamfight supportish/moderate DPS role until midgame hits where they then catch up in levels and the ADC becomes the lategame carry role. And jungle is the early full map support role that transitions into way too many things mid-late to generalize since junglers are so diverse (mid-late tank, mid-late assassin, mid-late support, etc.).

It makes sense to me that the full map support role isn't on the same level as solo roles.

Duo lanes are being fucked just as hard.

It’s not like top and mid were already the only roles that mattered, but riot wants to continue to shove this snowball win by minute 8 meta down our throats even harder.

Z3SIeeper3 votes

My first few games I thought bot was fucked. I thought top and mid were way too overbuffed in xp. But as I played more games I realized that bot lane is still super important.

Dragons are located near bot lane. Bot lane priority matters a ton.

Not only that, but come around level 11-ish time for solo lanes the duo laners are catching up fast and are probably level 10. This is where they come online and start being a major factor again. The late-game carry class in particular suddenly starts becoming a late game carry.

I've noticed a lot of games are way harder when your bot lane is losing, despite mid and top winning even with the crazy early xp leads. Half of the time you lose off a lost bot lane still, but it's not like before where bot lose = gg.

Also wtf lmao s9 bot lane was pretty damn important.

They already did before the changes if they had a brain. Only good duelists like warwick can prevent this.

Jg is all about being blessed with winning lanes who give you prio to contest river and dragons to get ahead.

You depend on 3 lanes instead of one lane only depending on the jg, it's horrendous. And then when they feed your enemy jg and you can't do anything, they blame you for doing nothing.

It is already happening. In gold+ games the top laner makes a visit down to the enemy jungle every single time they push the wave in. If they find the jungler and the jungler can't escape, its free kills. A two/three level difference in League is the difference between having a chance to fight back through skill and just getting obliterated without a second thought.

Don't understate.

A single level difference alone confers a huge advantage. You won't be able to fight people one level over you unless they're something as weak as an assassin one level over your bruiser/tank.

As blue Kayn I've gotten auto'd to death by smilarly leveled Caitlyns and stand no chance outleveled, and I'm supposed to counter their champ.

XP leads are even more massive than item leads, and it's why junglers on the losing side fall behind in such a snowball that it's almost impossible to turn the game around unless their bot/top lane got massively fed on their own.

A single level is usually just due to item difference or champion abilities. Where I really notice the difference is two plus levels down where my armor and MR seems to count for nothing.

Stop comparing yourself to a solo lane. Junglers are intended to be closer in parity to a duo lane, due to a) the relatively safe primarily PvE nature of the role, and b) the extreme influence that a jungler can play on who lanes go.

I will admit I haven't play preseason yet to experience how bad the changes are,

but this just rubbed me the wrong way enough to get me out of bed, log in, and call it out.

Junglers are intended to be closer in parity to a duo lane, due to a) the relatively safe primarily PvE nature of the role, and b) the extreme influence that a jungler can play on who lanes go.

No they're not, jungle has been supported as a solo role since it was a discovered and established strategy in s1, if it was meant to be treated as a duo or supportive position, we wouldn't have jungle items to isolate the role's dependence on laning, removal of tracker's knife to remove supportive qualities, reduced gold on jungle items if they're more ahead than laners (and gold funneling is still a fucking issue in mid diamond-low masters despite that change.) and kill pressure champs that clearly snowball and are meant to carry rather than 'support' their own team, instead its their team that 'supports' them.

Junglers are meant to influence lanes, while micromanaging their XP, and macro managing objectives.. the opportunity cost of spam ganking is losing the XP camps give, and losing cross-map objectives by revealing yourself.

Right now (referring to s9, not even talking about preseason since I haven't played it, but if its somehow worse holy shit..), junglers don't gain enough XP by farming, which means the "cost" of camps is severely diminished, and the "reward" for ganking and pushing waves is far greater than farming, which also reflects an aggressive metagame where passive picks are just fucking griefing compared to champs that can extend their leads while also enabling them early.

When you see only hyper aggro junglers and hyper ganking due to the fact farming is so gross, expect to see laners bitch and complain about jungler influence, meanwhile the junglers literally have nothing better to do since camp XP is gutted. It wasn't as bad when camps actually gave XP and powerfarming junglers were mixed in with the aggressive ones to at least give breathing room in some games. From what I'm seeing in patch notes, the only thing they're enabling is more scenarios where the solo lanes just fucking 1v2 or free kill the enemy jungler post lvl 6, primarily looking at:

Darius Chogath Illaoi Riven Renekton Aatrox DrMundo Jax Tryndamere Olaf

at least taking the jungler with them in a gank, if not both players.

I just assumed the reduced camp respawn would enable more gank - > farm - > gank - > farm to even it out, this thread is making that seem less apparent. I don't agree with junglers being higher level than solo laners, but at least on fucking par with how much the jungler has to go through to even establish their leads and extend them, there should never be a 2 level gap between an even solo laner and an ahead jungler, which I've seen way too frequently in s9, let alone 3-5 level gaps if the other post here are accurate.

but what do I know I guess its the boards, its post like these that make coaches and proplayers recommend avoiding the boards like the plague in favor of going for the plague.

What a role was at it's inception has no bearings on what it is currently, and currently, Riot has judged that jungler should be around the same level as a duo lane.

It does not matter that there are carries in that role, nor does matter that the role is solo. It simply has so much power over how a game can be, coupled with a greater relative non-interaction (at least in the early game), compared to every other position in the game.

A standard jungler should be about equal XP to a standard bot lane (this is not considering a snowballing jungler, which is what you should be doing if you are wanting to play a more XP intensive champion like Kha'Zix or Lee)

What a role was at it's inception has no bearings on what it is currently, and currently, Riot has judged that jungler should be around the same level as a duo lane.

What you think you're saying: riot is our gods they decide what game they want

What you're actually saying:

A) riot famously contradicts themselves yet again by making it a supportive position when they previously establish many times, even in jungle's healthiest states that it was a solo position. Riot's judgement would be a false court order and mention of it would be heresy, because as we all know riot's judgement has never been ideal in most scenarios, which both boards and high elo can agree with even for different reasons, and ignoring that fact is just shilling them. If riot thinks the current state of preseason, and states of s9, s8, and s7 which they have constantly changed claiming those metas were ok, they'd never change them in the future and contradict their goal of making a competitive balanced moba, their "judgement" has always been "we're making changes to fix it! (1 year later), we're fixing it again!, (another year), we gotta revert something cause we judged wrong! (rubberband XP from s7 in s10)."

B) riot is talking out of their ass becausel jungle has been healthy in s6, s4, and from what I've heard s2 which was when carry junglers could go supportive. We look at s7, s8, and s9, deemed to be the most broken seasons for jungle (both player vs. it and player as it) what are the common factors? changes to XP.

s7 - rubberband became a thing, hyper aggression rose

s8 - gimped XP to crab forcing level 2 junglers that can spam gank for river priority, causing more hyper aggression

s9 - gimped XP, junglers sat in lanes rubberbanding off of buffs and krugs because its the most efficient value of XP alongside impacting and soaking.. guess what, hyper aggression rose even more again.

This means riot's missing what was healthy about the jungle and refusing to revert back to the times when jungle was a role not the role or the autofill role. Their "judgement" would be them talking out of their ass not knowing what they're even doing, they'd be the judges playing minesweeper during court and then just throw out an electric chair sentence over a case of somebody speeding thinking that's the way the judge duty works without the jury (players) consent.

If riot is our judge, for the love of god impeach them. __

The big key difference is them tackling XP, with higher JG XP;

  • Spam ganking loses more XP as its instead downtime from farming, meanwhile the enemy jungler also is getting stronger in gold and XP, think back of sated devourer, where AFK perma farm jungling was still viable and keeping up with early game monsters like lee and elise off of completely outleveling and spiking hard into the game.

  • a bigger variety of less spam gankers is played; laners have more breathing room inbetween games (imagine being a kayle main, every fucking game you're getting dove.. now imagine if it was every few games or every other game, its more acceptable and less frustrating.)

  • Junglers can't just farm the same camp for rubberband XP, this means no more elise's that run straight to krugs, gank bot, recall, krugs, bot, look for mid/drag/crab/buffs, krugs, bot, removing rubberband XP (which they did) means they have to clear other camps to reset their XP level since 1 camp without rubberband XP isn't going to bounce them back from an XP deficent.

This is why they need to buff jungle XP, not nerf it more and more until only level 1 gankers or duo laning are viable because farming is just wasted downtown. There's a reason camille went from D tier in the jungle to S tier s8 with the XP change, because she didn't need XP to do what she needed to do and she wasn't missing out on any to do it either.

None of this is theory crafting, this is what fucking happened in old seasons when nobody was complaining, watch vods if you weren't there.. there's evidence of this being the way jungle needs to be and the fact we haven't realized this is just oblivious, no one with intelligence can compare a vod of a s4 or s6 high elo JG game to a s8 or s9 and think the recent jungle iterations are better.

coupled with a greater relative non-interaction (at least in the early game), compared to every other position in the game.

what is freezing

what is tracking leashes

what is counting CS and warding

what is understanding matchups The jungler has less influence of this than if you last pick an immobility champ that shoves vs. a champ with CC or engage. I can't do much as a jungler if you pick vlad into kassadin, but I sure as hell can disable you from playing the game if you pick no cleanse lux into twisted fate.

Heres the harsh truth, you don't know how to interact around junglers, in high elo this isn't as much of an issue unless your name is wingsofdeath, and I don't expect low elo to suddenly adapt to these concepts taught around the diamond-master tiers where even some of those players don't get them (nor do i expect low elo junglers to abuse that fact either), but there's very little justification for calling it non-interactive or if you want to refer to it as "broken" beyond what the individual player is doing. This isn't a role that you have no influence in controlling, its a role that you think you have no influence in controlling. This is where wave management is super important cause you can play around the position of their jungler based on counting their CS and knowing where they are after they reveal on the map, with this concept in mind, jungle becomes fucking useless and laner coinflip dependant in higher mmrs where it all depends on which jungler's team has the noobiest player that didn't pick setup or doesn't know these concepts that would nullify the other jungler, and to that noob, jungle is a broken role while everybody else is wondering why the fuck their jungler can't do anything.

and of course, again, these issues are elevated to new heights with how much hyper aggression is influenced due to low value in farming.

XJ999999999999997 votes

have to be decisive now in whether to gank or farm. if the gank fails, you should be punished for not farming and not playing it better.

if you farm, you can keep up.

before, someone could just get level 2 and gank a ton, get a ton of gold and levels and make their lanes win, and go back to jungling. The enemy jungler could be 1-2 levels ahead at this point if they choose to just farm their jungle and your jungle, but catchup exp made it so they weren't punished, making them close to your level after a few camps.

this current version of league is a good step in the right direction and goes towards a more skill based jungling.

I remember I used to stomp junglers all the time, but then what happened? They made camps spawn 30 seconds slower and gave scuttle more power. The game turned into a game where you just non stop gank and apparently you are a jesus jungler. I didn't play really at all last season. I gave the game a shot for a month or two, then I stopped. The game was just so shit and whenever I lost it wasn't because of the enemy team or the enemy jungler outplaying me, but the game is playing for them and telling them what to do.

now there is more decisions to be made, and we are closer to how jungling was 4-5 seasons ago.

Not always, especially if your 2v2/3v3 is much worse, then you're just revealing yourself there instead of pressuring the opposite side's objectives (where you can either gank a favorable wave, or with priority take the objective for free without smite 50/50).

ex. No point counterganking bot lane if you're playing a tank and your bot lane is raka ezreal vs. thresh kai'sa panth, you hard lose that or at best gain nothing lose nothing.

The only thing you could be doing is abusing the lane priority to get deep vision or sneak dragon, but actually taking that kind of fight is dumb if you can't take it. Of course needless to say there are situations where the jungler is just bad and doesn't reconize when they can counter gank (they see the enemy red team jg's blue spawning, and he's got the kaisa thresh, he can easily punish the enemy jungler if they decide to gank that with ezreal raka.)

That's just a gamble and needs proper vision control to predict anyways (which means your laners have to ward alongside you to keep track of the enemy jungler), if your gamble goes wrong you're just falling behind in xp.

You misread the original post. I said when all of your lanes are hard pushing, not just your bottom lane. The enemy jungle can potentially get kills in any of the 3 lanes, unless they happen to walk through some vision. You can narrow it down to two likely choices based on buff spawns, but it's still a 50/50 guess.

If they're a jungle who runs Boots of Mobility, it's still a shit show even with vision.

Janakin1 votes

I did not misread. I used bottom as an example. You should be able to predict in what part of the jungle is the enemy jungler and counter-gank accordingly...

Nevermind, probably no point to discuss that in here...

Abrosis2 votes

I think the bigger issue is that bot lane is currently the only viable lane to spam gank. You can gank top all you want, they will out level you, they will scale faster than you no matter what.

I've been in a game going like 3/1/4 out farming my mid laner who was going 0/ 6/0. I was 2 levels behind him. This meta is awful.

A good mid that roams bot and secures the OP dragons wins games currently. This meta is miserable and I so desperately hope riot reads over these posts for feedback.

The game is in a worse position than it was in s8 with the crit nerfs. It honestly hurts to see a game I love ruined in a single overloaded patch.

Thefrostyviking3 votes

How dafq is this possible?

Last night i played a jungle game, by the time i hit 6 enemy toplane (Fed) was 8 and midlane was 7, and this was despite me ganking twice and having a river fight up until then.

I had one kill at that point i think, then i went and got my jungle item and started clearing at a truly quick speed, then i was never lower than 1 level behind my toplaners and i was even with the midlaners while also slowly snowballing a gold lead.

As long as you focus on clearing early i dont see how you can fall behind in EXP so badly unless a sololaner gets fed early, the only real change seems to be that if a jungler who focuses on ganking fails to actually get anything from their ganks then they´ll suffer for it pretty badly compared to a powerfarmer who only really takes fairly certain shots.

Now this is the experience from only one game played but honestly i dont think junglers need to be even with sololaners in EXP, you just avoid ganking the lvl 6 Irelia while playing Sejuani or whatever and come back when you are 6 and wreck her ass with your local homie then even if she is 7.'

Heck it´s possible to make that gank work at 5 depending on your teammate up there too.

EXP is great but it´s not the ultimately deciding factor most of the time, only time i´d say it´s truly very important is when the target in question is Mordekaiser, specifically his lvl 6.

For obvious reasons.

So overall i´d say that the only ones who really got shafted by the EXP changes were botlane, by the time they are lvl 4 the enemy toplane can be 6 and a unfortunate teleport is all it takes to start a massacre.

If you do a second full clear you're don't even hit level 6 and both mid and top will hit 7 by them. The only Jungler in the game that can do a full clear and back into to do a second clear is Olaf. Ever other JG in the game takes an extra 15-30seconds. So it doesn't actually matter that the camps spawn faster at this point in the game because you can't get to them. If you full clear for the entire lane phase you'll be 2-3 levels and 1000+ gold below mid/top by the time mid-game starts. At which point your laners should be taxing your JG heavily. Thus power farming isn't viable.

JG went from the OP role during lane phase that hopes his team can carry him late. To a role that just shit at every phase of the game and is a scapegoat in baron/dragon smite fights.

I dont get what people are complaining about, junglers just exchanged solo power for more mapwide influence, and mapwide/macro influence is sorta the point of the jungle role.

The only junglers for which this is a nerf are the junglers who spam unsuccessful ganks on lanes just to be a nuisance to the opposig laners and expect NOT to get punished for failing because of catchup XP.

If you have skill, the jungle is arguably better now, if you suck and literally relied on catchup xp to cushion your lack of skill, then yeah its worse.

Realistically, anyone with a brain should realize that it wasn’t really fair for junglers to have equivalent solo power to solo laners considering how much more mapwide influence and pressure junglers contribute to the game, especially if you compare the jungle role to toplane in s9

Abrosis2 votes

This jungle nerf is awful right now. It makes so many junglers obsolete. Because of the xp nerfs you're going to get outscaled by any top or mid as long as they sit in their lane. The dont even need to farm better or get any kills and they will outscale you. It takes 1 decent mid laner to get a small lead, run it down bot for an easy double kill, and then secure drag uncontested because what are you going to do? That mid laner has 4 levels on the jungler.

If your 4 levels under as the jg, you're jungling wrong.

Junglers shouldn't be scaling on the same level as the solos, at least early, they have too much influence on the map for that to be balanced

If they don't stay close to solo lanes, we run into the problem of the solo lanes just invading them 24/7 for easy kills.

except that if they invade in that manner they will end up losing their lanes from missing farm and XP, the only place where this is really an issue is for scuttle contest.

It's also quite funny when junglers complain when the shoe is on the other foot, for many laners junglers not only being of the same level and having buffs on them+ certain things like the predator keystone, made it excessively difficult to avoid getting ganked or at the very least blowing flash, it wasn't fair, and yet as soon as you guys start leveling slower you get all worried about laners invading your jungle which covers half the map. it's not like most teams are deep warding your entire jungle 5 minutes in, they don't have the resources for that, so all this "omg they are gunna invade me" is just one giant boogeyman
