It's 2019 and choosing your secondary runes is still some of the worst UX in the world

How has this managed to remain so unintuitive for an entire year?

Does nobody at Riot ever go to change their second rune by clicking on it, then the new rune, only to have it replace their first rune, and think 'wait, why the fuck does it work this way?'

Because runes are powerful mysterious artifacts that work when they want to.

thousands of bugs and lags of this new client, meanwhile Dota2 just have like 100 changes and fix within a patch. thousands of Riot staffs, and only 3 are in charge of client GUI. GJ

As annoying as this is, I just want a client that doesn't use more system resources than the game. I love having to wait 2-4 minutes at the end every game for the client to start again. I love dodging because the client freezes on me. I love being dodged on and then missing the queue accept because my client hasn't even loaded from the dodge yet.

Have you tried using the hextech repair tool or the support function on the forums?

The hextech repair tool is a glorified reinstaller, little more from my experience.

ofc riot doesnt change their second rune because most of riots employees dont play this game. and for good reasons

From what I remember a Rioter commented on this. Said they would have to redo the way runes are selected or something that would take too much time.

Xonra2 votes

Yeah and who would want to take time to fix problem. They sure aren't gonna do that. It's more important for them to implement more bugs into the client with features no one wants.

Because their client is so incompetently programmed that it is a RAM hog even compared to DotA or HotS which load 3D models on the client

They replaced Spaghetti Code with Macaroni Code

SpaghettiVase1 votes

It really is the worst client I've ever used for any application.

Aww, does the poor multi-million dollar corporation not have enough money to pay its employees to fine tune their product? The poor dears.

I was going to say "at least it's better than it used to be". But now I'm thinking twice, and I'm not so sure that it's better, outright. Some of the old bugs/annoyances are gone, it's true--but in most of those cases, it's not so much because they were fixed than because the thing they were attached to no longer exists.

I guess it would be more accurate for me to say "at least not the same as it used to be."

On this topic, why do we still have these overloaded runes to begin with?

The old system was far better because the stats it gave weren't so obscenely high.

How is it at all unintuitive? How would you rather it work?

it happens to me too, he's saying,

say you have sorcery secondary. you have manaflow band and trancendence. you want to change manaflow band into gathering storm, but when you click manafloe and then gathering storm you find yourself with the gathering storm but it changed the trancendence instead.

its honestly kind of annoying.

Dynikus11 votes

Oh, do you guys not use the grid view for runes? I honestly forgot the other way was a thing because it's so bad, I switched away from it immediately. I agree, that method for runes is horrible and unintuitive af.

Velzard of Koz4 votes

LOL I always wondered what problem people have with the system and also only now realized some people actually use the other thing, not grid. I never had any issues with grid.

Póppy Chulo7 votes

Wait wait there is another mode to choose runes?

Velzard of Koz2 votes

Yeah the one where it shows on the right mini-tooltips and you have to click to show the three runes of that row and the one that just always shows all the runes in all rows.

Properly.

It should work by the secondary rune that I select is the one that changes. Not the one that I want to keep and didn't click on.

Am I the only one who doesn't have that many problems with the client?

davmackinhos2 votes

Ya know, its funny. Back when it first launced i made a post about it that got a lot of attention and i even talked to a dev abt it in the thread. She said they were looking to fix the problem. I guess she lied.

MikeJ122O2 votes

Why is this rune change not fixed? it's been like this forever.

Nevrankroaton2 votes

I could make a poll in this board asking "What is the most obnoxious thing" with Zoe, Yasuo and the secondary runes selection...

And STILL have the secondary runes selection be first. It is how bad it feel.

Póppy Chulo2 votes

Runes are really strong in the game so they needed to make a way to add skill expression to them, and this is the result

Syrile2 votes

You assume Riot wants you to have fun playing League of Legends. :)

Kadexe2 votes

Well think about how it would work if it replaced your second rune instead.

I click on Triumph, then Alacrity. But wait, I want Cut Down and Alacrity. So I click on Cut Down, and... it deselects Alacrity. Fuck. I click Alacrity and now it deselects Cut Down. Argh! I'm stuck with Triumph (or Overheal, or Presence of Mind) and I can't get rid of it.

Big fucking facts. Also, 30 seconds to pick runes once all the champions are selected ? That SHIT HAS ANIMATION TIMES DUDE. 3 whole fucking minutes to choose your champs and then when the last 3 players all instalock you get 20 effective seconds to think about what runes you want BASED ON THE CHAMPIONS PICKED------- time to team chat about strategy included. Its awful. AND. TO TOP IT OFFF. That shit says "wOuLd YoU lIkE tO sAvE cHaNgEs tO YoUr RuNeS ?" only to have it not even work. You only actually get 29 seconds.

They were hoping we'd get used to it, despite the fact that it's obviously broken. I'd guess one of those things that's harder to fix than it looks, or was changed to that to work around some sort of duplicate rune bug or something. In any case, we haven't gotten used to it as it is THAT BAD.

As someone who is an informed person on UX Design, I somewhat have to agree with the OP and not agree at the same time. I think the grid system is intuitive enough to understand "I only get two runes in the secondary tree" but at the same time I think the problem is not in the design of it but the writing of the code (if you still follow me). The interaction on the back end may not be well written. So rather than whine about how unintuitive it is, why not complain that the interaction is poorly coded. That will get quicker feedback than a pointless rant.

Keep in mind, Riot doesn't necessarily test EVERYTHING with us the massive player base. Their testing is limited to in-house testing and the PBE. So any problems that come up on live aren't always known until it gets to live. Learn to show some patience.

These "mindless rants" are pointing towards the issues, not solutions which are obvious while reading about the issue.

People don't know how code works. It's not common knowledge. But if you have X and Z rune and want to replace X rune with a Y rune, then it shouldn't replace Z rune with the Y rune instead.

I didn't realize it worked this way for quite a few games when I was first playing, so I was promising hideous tasks for just little extra mana on Brand because my Mana Flow was absolutely MIA.

If you press the button by the left down corner, this UI will appear instead, this one does not have that rune fiddly problem you describe.

MankeyMadness1 votes

Its like that for a reason. It changes the first rune selected, so that the same code operates both versions of the UI.

UI staff: 2 Rito employees Skin staff: 2,352 Rito employees

Still can't drag-and-drop to reorder your Item Sets collections.

Export/Import Item Sets still doesn't copy slot positions.

Don't worry, though, by federal law every three Prestige Edition skins Rito releases we are supposedly guaranteed one UI fix, or Rito has to pay a $1,200 fine per fix skipped. Oh wait, Rito just keeps paying the fines and laughs maniacally! WTF!

[sg-janna]

Also, Heimerdinger's turrets still consistently get stuck at full charge, unable ever to fire another beam attack. That major bug has been there for more than 20 patches. Count 'em. A known major bug makes it through more than 20 patches! What in the livin' heck!?

Perhaps it's time to double Rito engineering department staff to 8 people?

Heimerdinger starts buying item 3003 over item 3285 so the free item 3070 Rito hands out doesn't go to waste.
