Ahri Kit Is Just Too Safe.

Best Ekko NA··38 votes·5,522 views

I've never been much of an Ahri player and I actually didn't fully understand much about her damage and ratios, etc., however I've seen so many people using Ahri within the past 5-6 months that I finally decided that I was going to check her Wiki Page (http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Ahri) out of curiosity just for a refresher of her abilities. It's actually quite a lot more horrid than I expected.

To start off... she's a ranged champion. Most Ranged champions have trade-offs it seems, such as majority of adc's having a pretty low mana pool early - along with lower base damage than their melee counterparts. Looking at Ahri however.. she has

1.) Low mana costs. 2.) Very low cool downs (Especially her ultimate consider it gives her 3 free damage dealing Flashes). 3.) Pretty huge mana pool (334 - 1184, way bigger than Malzahar who actually has higher mana costs). 4.) Sustain. 5.) True Damage. 6.) Massive movement speed. 7.) Up to 2 second crowd control.

So what exactly does Ahri trade off for her range and mobility? Nothing. I'm pretty shocked honestly, Ahri is literally the safest most overloaded champion I've seen in a while.

Is this kit what Riot considers "balanced"? If so that's actually a bit worrisome...

Why are people always so illogical about champs they hate? That's pretty funny.

Ahri has low mana costs? I'm sorry, but expending 75 mana a Q at lvl 4 with around 447 mana is NOT "low" mana costs. She has moderately high mana, and exploding her full QWE combo at lvl 4/5 takes her to under 50% mana. She can legit only do that combo twice in lane before going oom. Therefore, Ahri's are mostly with only using Q or W once every 15-30 seconds or so in the starting of laning phase. If they're blowing spells at a faster rate than that, they're going to run oom fairly quickly.

If you get whittled down so much, that by 6, she can all in you -- that's your fault.

Very low cool downs? Lmfao. She has a static 12 second CD on E before CDR. Max CDR, Ahri's Q is on a FIVE second CD, her W (being the shortest CD at 3 seconds -- though you have to use it first) and her E is on a 8 second CD. I bet that's pretty low for "kite mage" status : Ryze Taliyah Velkoz

A huge mana pool? Her mana pool is moderately average when compared to every champion: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_champions'_mana

Negligible sustain that really is rarely EVER noticeable? She has to cast around 3 abilities (around 120-180 mana early) to get her passive, THEN burn her ability again (another 75/40 mana) to get her passive. Yeah, that's good over a decent amount of time (think 1.5-3mins)

Massive movement speed that decays FAIRLY quickly. Though I can admit, if you're playing someone who doesn't have any gap closers, that movement speed can be REALLY annoying. I wouldn't mind if they made it to where you had to hit a champion to gain that movement speed.

And a crowd control that can be body blocked by allies and minions alike and only affect one person? Might as well complain about every freaking mage in the game:

Ryze Xerath Cassiopeia AurelionSol Leblanc Syndra Taliyah Veigar Velkoz Viktor Swain

I mean, need I continue about how even adding that to your list was completely and utterly pointless? And overloaded? Really? She has one of the most cohesive kits in the game without going overboard. You call one tacked on MS buff that made Ahri go from garbage to viable overloaded? They just need to make it more situational to make her less annoying to kill. However, she's a fully skill based champ that can very EASILY mess up her entire combo.

Her kill pressure, compared to most other mages, is also really low and her biggest spike is mid game. She's not going to carry a game come late game, she can be ran down fairly easily by most champs, susceptible to flanks as well -- but you want to lower her 60 CD ulti when every assassin in the game has about a 60 CD OR LOWER cooldown on their ultis? Yeah, how about no? She needs something up just as often as everyone else trying to kill her. She's more useless without her ulti than some other champs are. She can only throw out her Q or her very linear E to try and affect a teamfight when her ultimate is on CD.

Even though Ahri is my 2nd favorite Champ next to Riven, I'm being completely objective here. If you think her kit isn't balanced, then maybe YOU'RE the one we need to be worried about. She's a burst related kite mage with less DPS than almost the entire mage class. If you play Ahri, you'll feel the difference in how much harder you have to work for kills over other champs. Being a person that spammed almost 130 games for ranked alone using Ahri last season, let me tell you how good I feel when I can just melt people at lvl 4/5 playing people like Annie, Syndra, Viktor etc and going "HOLY DAMAGE".

Only way Ahri is doing that much damage, is if you let her get fed. I can 1 shot ADCs at lvl 6 on Viktor from full health with my 2 dorans and E upgrade. Just because Ahri runs bot and 1 shots your 50% HP adc and support, doesn't make her OP.

I agree her mana costs are in the norm and even a bit high early game. I don't agree her sustain is negligible and not noticeable, if she Qs a wave she can get back around 10% HP early game, that's pretty big imo.

You don't need to pick OP's complaints out of context one by one and compare it to other mages. Saying that you might as well complain about every mage because they all have crowd control is stupid, the point is that she has the movement speed AND the crowd control AND 3 dashes on ulti AND sustain in lane. It's the fact that she has all those things that make the argument that she's too safe valid as a whole, analyzing bits of her kit in a vacuum is pointless.

Also i don't agree with the fact that she's weak late game, she has great scalings and can oneshot squishies with just EWQ. Altough i agree she needs more skill late game due to everyone oneshotting everyone.

Also i don't agree with her not being able to oneshot at lv 6, she can definitely oneshot if she has ignite and lands everything. Of course she doesn't deal the damage of viktor syndra or annie but those have the weakness of being fairly immobile champions.

Her sustain in the early game is not that noticeable. It also fairly expensive to get her passive off because you need to spend at least 3 abilities and they have to hit 3 targets.

We can compare how each mages use their kit to apply their damage though. Ahri has to get in close to apply most of her damage. That's why she need the three charges on her ultimate. It's also an ultimate after all so it has to be good. They can remove the movement speed bonus on Q. It was a buff that wasn't needed. Other than that her W she has to get in close to get it off on a champ, E and Q is a skill shot you need to land, and the true damage on Q is only applied if you get hit by it on its return.

She is strong late game. Nothing to say about that.

It's very hard to one shot anyone at level 6 unless they're half HP and you land your charm, and/or your opponent is terrible. If you're trying to go in and miss your charm you will have to back out. Your W won't do a lot of damage unless you maxed it first(but I never maxed W first before so i can't really say), and you might hit them once with your Q but they will dodge it on its return.

She has skillshots and W requires her to be close but she only really needs to land the charm. If she lands it she's guaranteed to land the rest of her abilities. She can definitely oneshot you at level 6 if she lands everything + ignite and maybe a few autos, and it's not hard for her to poke you down a little bit before.

yeah..and that's IF she land her E. You make it sound like Ahri land her charm 100% of the time. It's not a point and click CC, it's a skill shot.

Lol I've played a lot of Xerath, he uses a lot of mana even with his passive and mana regen. Unless you plan on not firing your skills at anything, but then what would be the point in playing such a long range champion? xD

EndlessSorcerer3 votes

Mana costs haven't been an issue for a long time now on most mages due to Doran's Ring(s), Lost Chapter and Meditation.

If you aren't constantly spamming spells, you shouldn't have any issues beyond the first back.

You will wear yourself down if you just constantly use abilities (as you would on any mage), but poking/clearing with Q isn't overly difficult.

You'd be surprised how much mana Doran's Rings restore if you are last-hitting properly.

NineTailedMystic1 votes

If the Xerath is competent, Ahri won't be more than 60-70% HP from her passive. She would need to go boots 4 to sustain to full often.

I believe Ahri's ult cd should be increased by around 10sec rank 1 and 30 sec and rank 3 ahri does way too much dmg for being that safe if you engage on her she can just shove and roam constantly with minimal drawbacks. If someone who has a brain plays ahri they can easily 1v5 carry Early-mid game and still can chunk enemies later into the game.

NineTailedMystic9 votes

Low mana costs.

No. Her costs aren't extreme, but you will run out of Mana if you don't manage your Mana properly. Her bread and butter of EQ is very Mana taxing early game.

Very low cool downs (Especially her ultimate consider it gives her 3 free damage dealing Flashes).

Q: 7 seconds flat, 4.4 with 40% CDR. W: 9 scaling to 5, 5.4s scaling to 3s with 40% CDR. E: 12 seconds flat, 7.2 with 40% CDR R: 110/95/80, 66/57/48 with 40% CDR.

It's important to note that W's cooldown doesn't begin until the last foxfire and been used or the ability times out, so the only real short cooldown Ahri has is her R and she kinda needs it to do anything important.

Pretty huge mana pool (334 - 1184, way bigger than Malzahar who actually has higher mana costs).

Gee, it's a shame that Malzahar doesn't have anything like a Mana return for killing things with one of his abilities...

Also at level 1, Ahri can only Q five times on her base Mana pool without factoring in any regen.

Sustain.

That requires three spells worth of Mana minimum to fuel. That's only 3 + .09 AP per hit until level 6. Is it nice? Yes. But it's costly and can be denied by forcing a trade when she has it. She has to choose minimum healing by trading back or not fighting back and using it on the wave instead.

True Damage.

On the back end of her Q. That deals 140 + .35 AP True Damage. "omg true damage op". Yes it's nice to have, but 80% of her damage is still Magic Damage. Buy some MR.

Massive movement speed.

215 decaying MS after using Q. Personally it should be moved to an ult passive, only on champion hit, or removed. I've always been neutral on it.

Up to 2 second crowd control.

1 second CC that scales up to 2 seconds at rank 5. Guess what? The most frequent skill orders has E maxed last. I prefer E maxed second but most people do a QWE order.

So what exactly does Ahri trade off for her range and mobility? Nothing.

She has to put herself at risk to actually 100-0 someone. Her W and R and 550 and 600 range for damage respectively. That is in retaliation range for most champions. Yes, she can fish for Charms at 975 range, but if she's max ranging Charms it should be fairly easy to avoid.

She's also one of the squishiest champions in the game.

She also has an awful time if she falls behind because her bases and ratios are actually lower than average in compensation for her mobility.

Listen, Ahri will always be popular for two reasons (Hell, people call her ~10-12% Play Rate outrageous sometimes where there are champs like Jhin running around). I'll give you 3 guesses and OP or broken is not one of the answers. . . . Got your answers? Well here are the reasons. 1) She's hot and attracts people who are into her design. 2) Her kit has a low skill floor but high skill ceiling. She is versatile and rewarding to learn. She's a Solo Queue champion by design. Could she use some minor nerfs? Maybe, but you are blowing her kit far out of proportion.

Zone of Endless6 votes
  1. Not low mana cost at all. She will go oom if you're not managing her mana properly in the early game. Now if you're talking about mid/late game then no other champ has mana problem either.

  2. The CD is pretty much similar to every other champ other there. Long in the early game and short in the late game. It's also a dash and not a flash.

  3. She has 9 more MP than Malz at level 1 and 100 more at level 18. Let's also not forget that Malz can recover his mana if his space aids kill a unit. Her level 1 mana is also lower than average for a mage while at level 18 it's slightly higher than average. Let's also not forget morello solve the mana issues once you get it.

  4. They nerfed her passive a lot before. It's not that strong.

  5. Her true damage is on a skill shot and it only does true damage if you got hit by it on its return path. So it's easy to dodge that if you have even a decent reaction time.

  6. The movement speed buff on Q was dumb. No one knows why they gave it to her.

  7. 2 seconds CC if you have it maxed.

ADC have naturally low mana because they're ADC. They rely more on their AA than abilities. If you're gonna compare mana pool then compare it to other mages.

Her base damage and ratio is also low compared to other mages so her early game damage isn't a lot unless you manage to land her Q every once in a while.

They just need to remove the speed buff on her Q so that she's more easily ganked pre 6 or when if she blow her ult.

I really want them to return the amp, but if they don't, whatever, just get rid of the speed buff and start tackling the rampant mobility creep. Further alterations to kits can be discussed when mobility, power, and damage are at reasonable levels across the board.

As I stated elsewhere, the last time I was hopeful, I got burned pretty bad, but I'll still try and hope they've partially regained a shred of sanity with their efforts to reduce damage, and claims to bring tanks back into the game in a way that they won't be killing everyone while also being unkillable since no one wants a preseason 5 again - the middle bit is preferable.

Ahri's kit isn't necessarily too safe. Ahri's a mage where her kit offers a lot of stuff a mid laner wants: sustain, poke, burst, some hard CC, AoE and good mobility. I wouldn't exactly call that "overloaded". (If you wanna look at overloaded kits, look at Yasuo and Camille)

She is however, very easy to abuse since she's a jack-of-all-trades mage, she doesn't fulfill a certain kind of mage sub-class which means any specialization mage like Malzahar (DPS and lockdown), Xerath (Artillery/Long Range), Swain/Azir (High-DPS Battle Mages) or any assassin can do pretty well against her, guaranteed you know what you're doing.

Assassins are honestly shit (besides Kata and perhaps Zed) against her due to getting charmed the instant they try using their gap closer. And then they get their ass kited, because they just used their gapcloser to get into range, since Ahri's ranged, and now Ahri has 3 dashes.

I mean honestly, ignoring my mocking you, yes, she is too safe, and Riot doesn't want to admit it. They can't see the arbitrary (and fucking retarded) movement speed buff on her Q added way too much power into her kit after they stripped the Charm amp from her and gave it to Fishboy. She didn't need the extra help - she was plenty mobile enough with her low-CD ult and Flash alone, and the only reason it exists is because they wanted to see her in the LCS. That's literally it, no other reason whatsoever. In Riot's mind, thematic gameplay doesn't matter when the state of the pro matches comes into discussion. That's truly disgusting and should worry anyone attached to a particular champion who dips in and out of the LCS meta.

Good ol Froggen, bringing out the pick no one else cares about. Good on him.

As for your second point, she came out super overtuned from her rework and she stayed that way for precisely 1 patch. That patch holds no relevance to today and that thus that point is void. Ahri see's practically no professional play and is nowhere near a contested mid pick. The idea that Riot is leaving her strong so she's played in LCS clearly isn't working.

The reason she has the speed was because as DFG was in the game, Ahri was a constant pick while being too strong with the amp interaction, but they wanted to continue seeing her, so they gave her a movement speed buff that she didn't need which pushed her over the edge.

I wasn't pointing out anything except that she was changed for a bullshit reason, and you want to try and force pick rates into it, but since you want them...

In Season 6 spring, she was picked 25 times in EU LCS and 8 times in NA. That's just Atlantic regions. That's season 6, and she was changed in early 5.

  1. She is squishy as fuck.
  2. She has to get into near melee range to kill, which forces her to ult.
  3. Her only CC is a single target skillshot, so it can be both dodged and bodyblocked.

She can play safe if she has to, but if she actually wants to be useful, she immediately becomes very high risk.
