A confusion on Runes Redone for people who have stuff
So, I understand the arguments in favor of changing out runes, and that's fine. This game has changed tremendously since I started in Season 1. I appreciate that the barrier to entry can feel quite massive when it comes to not just certain champions but in terms of developing the unique play style one might garner from trying out different rune sets and having 20 pages to dedicate to particular match ups and team comps.
However, that isn't my concern. The game will change around me, and as always, I will adapt. However, I am curious what Riot plans on doing for people in my situation.
To explain, some people have said "I have 10-20 rune pages, and I just hope Riot gives me back my IP at least cause I could buy so many more champions" or something similar. This has solution good precedent (see the removal of dodge runes) and probably works well for most players, particularly the ones at whom the changes are aimed (newer players). However, this would be an abysmal solution for players most "grievously" hurt by these changes: veterans.
At present, I have 36637 IP on my account. In addition, I have every champion, every rune, and 20 rune pages. I own several chromas I don't use simply because for a short window of time, one could buy chromas with IP. In fact, I have some runes whose names were not changed because they are special variants of a rune from an old Christmas celebration: (ie, Deadly Wreath).
So, let's suppose that Riot carries out the sensible plan of abolishing the current iteration of runes. What now? I have every rune in the game and 20 rune pages, which means I get...let's just guess 250,000 + IP refunded? That is the same as receiving nothing. I can outright buy the next 4 champions on the day they come out without play another game. IP doesn't do anything for me.
So, what other solution could exist? People bash getting free skins on the forums, free loot boxes, etc. So, what does the player base expect? What is Riots plan for handling individuals in my situation?
One possible solution is to grant an RP refund, based on the runes returned. If it were too small, like 1 RP per rune, it's insulting (wow, 250~ RP? GREAT! :/), but mayb 10 RP a run (or something?), which is essentially 20 dollars of value for my complete rune collection wouldn't be too insulting, and then maybe like half the RP value of each rune page(?).
In any case, the one concern I have that doesn't seem apparently addressed is refunds for people who have full collections and have literally no use for IP. I realize I got the "advantage" of having any runes I want, but it's not as though I didn't work for them by playing the game. Additionally, many runes are straight up useless except for hilarity (full bonus crit damage +46% damage on crits :D), so maybe this argument is less valid than proponents think.
In any case, this is just my thoughts and concern. Figured I would toss it into the conversation for what it's worth.
