Rito, can you guys please stop removing the character inking from new champions, reworks and skins ?

For those who don't, LoL always had the feature to have a black outline in the champions. This is usually used in games where the characters are really small on the screen (e.g: LoL, Super Smash Bros. 3DS) or cell-shaded games (e.g: most anime games like Naruto and Dragon Ball, Okami). Since the release of Kayn, Riot has been removing this with very few exceptions (e.g: Xayah and Rakan). This not only makes the characters harder to see (at least to me) it almost makes them blend with the background, making them more unnoticeable, which can end up in a death because we weren't able to notice the enemy in time. It also makes the game look worse. Cell-shade graphics makes games look good even after years (e.g: Okami) and, although graphics isn't what's important in LoL, it makes the game look worse.

I know sometimes it's necessary to remove it because you want to do those "flowing-transparent hairs/capes" like Shadow Assassin Kayn and Katarina's last Harrowing skin but Irelia really didn't need to have the inking removed. You should take a Yorick as an example: he still has the inking and still has his transparent cape flowing.

TL;DR: Riot has been removing the character inking from champions, which makes them harder to see.

The funny thing is, is people are talking about it being less intensive for machines... When there is an OPTION to REMOVE the black outlines.

Riot already answered this question somewhere. They're removing character inking because it was a thing in the old days when League's color palette and effects were just too flashy and unbalanced between themselves. A time when it was harder to see what was happening in a fight due to overlapping effects.

It's also a resource intensive process for a computer. Riot's new philosophy covers for inking not being there at all and they're slowly removing it from the game as an unnecessary feature.

I like the Inking, they shouldn't remove it.

That's irrelevant. If inking is a resource hog and RIot's making sure to build a client that can run on many machines that aren't the toppest of keks in terms of tech tiers, it stands to reason that they'll want to remove it. It also causes FPS issues in my case so i keep it off all the time. It's an unnecessary feature now since Riot's already making new champs/effects already stand out from the background and there's no need for a more resource expensive process to be enabled in the options menu at the same time.

TempName748145 votes

Then it can just be off by default? lol?

Terozu1 votes

Lol if you think their client can run on low spec machines you clearly have never used one.

It's more resource heavy than Skyrim.

Steelflame1 votes

client vs in game are two different things. Client is pretty bad about optimizations, but its entirely out of game and not worried nearly as much about messing up twitch reactions as a result, but if you play league on minimum settings then its fairly solidly optimized for the in game.

Terozu1 votes

Oh yeah, in game is fine. I can play on highest settings and still get 30-40 fps. I dont do that, but i can.

But the client is god awful. And Tomoe said they built a client for low power machines.

I don't know in what timeline you live in but League has had a new client for a while now. Moving away from Adobe AIR made the client way less resource intensive.

Terozu1 votes

Dude the current client is far far far far far more resource intensive than the old one. If you think otherwise you are flat out wrong.

Some people arenr able to use the new client. It takes more ram than Skyrim and they know it takes a lot of resources.

The old one never needed to close while in game. It was way smoother. It just wasn't as 'Pretty'.

It's not. Don't spread misinformation. Open your task manager while it's running and take note on how much memory it uses. Then try to find some screenshots of the old client's memory usage. The whole reason why Riot even switched to new tech was because it's standardized, more supported and less memory intensive.

Terozu1 votes

Excuse me dude but that is utter lies.

They made it to be more pretty and easier to customize.

They specifically said it would be more resource heavy. They also added low spec mode. And they made it able to close while in game. Why? Because it takes up so much RAM.

The old one was basically a windows form. It didnt need a low spec mode. It didnt need a close in game option.

You are utterly lying right now and even Riot would confirm the new one is more resource intensive and they knew it would be.

No need for ultra graphics on many games either but they are still there for those who want it. Just because it makes the game run better for some doesn't mean it should be removed but rather be an option. Clearly, amazoX posted something relevant.

Well I never noticed this because my computer is shit and I have character inking turned off anyways.

Spank the Fox6 votes

I honestly can’t tell the difference.

I know the option has existed for years, but enabled or not, I could not see a difference at all.

AmazoX3 votes

It all started with Kayn's release. ;~;

Terozu3 votes

Xayah and Rakan arent an exception, they were released before Kayn.

agreed. it looks very ugly without the inking

I think they've been removing the character inking because it's surprisingly resource intensive. Removing the inking helps the game run better and allows for better looking visuals.

Like I said in the post, it looks worse. We have an option to turn it off if we want so I don't understand why they're removing it forcefully

Don't know what you're talking about, Kayn looks fantastic.

lol im relatively new to the game, just unlocked my few first skins and straight away I was like wtf. The most expensive ones look the most shit. I bought divine sword Irelia - dog shit, literally. This cheapest one is the best Irelia skin, the only one with inking. I can believe people doesn't even notice it. I dont have a superb pc but I still sacrifice couple fps to have it on because the game for me looks so shit with this thing off, I have to be uber focus to even hit one cs. I was like wtf straight away in the fountain when I logged in. Same with Gun Godness Miss Fortune. Same with High Noon Thresh and Lucian. I was like wtf is this crap. Now I always check them on youtube first to be safe. Things like Project Ashe, Jhin, Star Guardian MF and Sandra are all fine, but those once with this off as a default for me its insane. In addition - if it slows ur pc just turn this off, I dont understand how they can force people and slowly start to remove it wtf.

Oh please,we are talking about a (unfortunately) big game thats over 10 years old that has not got a fucking brightness/contrast setting..

character inking feels like the most pointless thing in this game IMO i turned it off the second i started this game since it just made my computer slow
