If Riot wanted runes to be more thoughtful, why are Aery and Comet so boring and uninspired?

There is actually no thinking involved between the two at all. It's basically I cast a spell and my keystone does damage, I'll take whatever keystone does the most damage on this patch.

There is no "Oh maybe I shouldn't take this in this particular match up because I'm playing this type of champion" or "Oh maybe I should take this because most of my spells are single target" or "Maybe I want to have a little more sustain damage instead"

It's simply boils down to "Oh Aery is OP for this one patch so let's all just take it into every match up no matter what type of champion I play or damage I do" then when Aery gets nerfed we're just gonna see everyone taking comet instead because it also has no thinking or playstyle involved besides just generically casting spells.

At least in a tree like Resolve I have to think "Maybe I should take take Aftershock because I want to engage quickly using my control abilities" or "I'd rather have extra healing and on hit damage during sustain skirmishes" or "I'm playing support so guardian might really help my lane." There is also a lot more thinking involved in Precision, Inspiration, and Domination to.

maybe its not inspiring because its the sorcery tree

i would suggest going into the inspiration tree for what you're looking for [katarina-love]

So Domination tree is basically 100% winrate guarateed, Precision has unreachable learning curve, Sorcery gets you burned alive, Resolve has low pick rate and Inspiration is taken by those chat-memers.

I mean, mage itemization is boring and uninspired, why wouldn't their runes be?

Aery is pretty cool. Comet is really dull :T

You don't want to take Comet on champs with no CC, or if you're against hyper mobile champs. Aery has no thought in it as it just buffs your attacks and shields with no counterplay. The only thing interesting about Aery is that it's an actual creature and not just magic stuff.

Not completely true. You have to play around Aerys timer as it comes back to you or goes to the enemy, amd thus there is a kinda choice minigame involved in using it in this regard.

That's what we call a cooldown. As you probably know, it's nothing unique. The most unique part about it is that you can slightly increase or decrease it by moving towards Aery.

I think it could matter on champions who have both abilities that target enemies and abilities that target allies. The attach duration seems like a problem though since even if you make the wrong choice you have it back quickly anyway.

Personnally, I think comet should have be an active ability like the predator rune which will have actually offer the mage class an another spell to cast when they need it and feel more unique.

Right now it only feel similar to Aery as AoE but worse since his cd is higher.

Let them just copy Diablo3 when it comes to the comet :D

I see them nerfing Aery when it comes to damage its garennteed damage vs the comet is dodgable. .. i personally think both are good but i perfer Aery cuz i play fiddlesticks and it acts like another bounce on dark wind where as the comet doesnt feel as smooth with fiddles' playstyle

There is actually thinking involved.. I stupidly took comet with Teemo... I hit 5% of my comets because they kept getting triggered by my shrooms across the map, by the time my comet traveled that distance the enemy wasn't anywhere near where they rpoced it, and it missed.

That's not how comet works.

It takes the same time to impact no matter how far they are.

Personally I think aery is good on its intended users Sense they have to manage weather it goes to an ally or enemy. the problem comes in when everyone with harass is taking it and it becomes another dft.
